Drapery curtains with their own hands. We sew curtains with our own hands: a master class from professionals

With quality fabric and some sewing skills, you will get beautiful do-it-yourself curtains, photo-examples of which you will see in the article. Especially when you consider that simplicity, conciseness and strict geometry of lines have become global trends, which is very helpful for beginners to master sewing. Let's analyze simple views curtains, delicate curtains, as well as very popular roll designs of various types.

How to sew curtains with your own hands

To learn quickly how to sew curtains with your own hands, you need to understand what kind of them you want to see in your room. After all, there are a lot of varieties of textiles for windows, just like the methods of its fastening, drapery,. Do you need to learn all this art, unless you are planning to open a sewing workshop. For all other cases, choose one type from the available ones and experiment on it.

Decide why in each particular room you need this product. Somewhere it is necessary to decorate the light opening, to make it more attractive in appearance. In an urban environment, it may be necessary to fence off prying eyes, especially if the houses are almost close to each other. And in the bedroom or children's room, it is very important to achieve good blackout so that, if necessary, the night can come even when the sun is already shining outside the window.

The most dense products are called curtains. They are sewn from such fabrics as jacquard, tapestry, velvet, some are supplied with a lining, which makes the structure even heavier. The veils fall down in large folds, creating a very solemn appearance window. Previously, the purpose of such a fabric was to protect the room from drafts, which inevitably existed due to cracks in wooden frames. Now that the problem with drafts has been resolved with the advent of metal-plastic products, curtains are no longer an indispensable element of decor, they may not be used at all (if there is a beautiful shape of the openings and you don’t want to close it) or not closed, leaving it on the sides, on the outer edges of the eaves. These curtains are indispensable for lovers of long sleep, for shading children's bedrooms, but in the kitchen or in the bathroom, curtains will be completely out of place, they will get dirty and interfere. The place, the volume that they occupy, prevent them from being used on loggias and balconies. But for traditional interiors or for decorating a large open space, it is heavy fabric that is still very popular.

Previously, they were used in constant tandem, like a thread with a needle, but now their paths have diverged. We are talking about a curtain - a product made of thin, light, translucent fabric. With the help of this type are carried out. Since the fabric of the curtain is thin and has a transparent structure, even folds made with geometric accuracy on its surface cannot be achieved. Curtains can be draped, but with soft folds. Usually they either completely cover the opening, or place them on the sides, just like curtains. To process curtains, you do not need complex tools, additional devices, an ordinary sewing machine with a set of standard paws and needles will be enough.

New to us, but classic all over the world, curtains with lifting mechanisms. Developing from Roman and Austrian, in which the fabric was gathered into folds, to rolls and blinds, these types are considered the most practical and comfortable. They are the undisputed leaders in the selection of windows in the bathroom, the design of small interiors, where every centimeter counts and the active use of the window sill zone is planned.

However, all these types can be successfully combined in any combination, for example, curtain + curtain or curtain + roll. This will give you the opportunity to achieve maximum functionality from your curtains. For each type do-it-yourself curtains master class will be different, but combine them in single ensemble it will be easy for you.

Sewing curtains with your own hands

master sewing curtains with your own hands The easiest way is with the simplest model - draped fabric with ruffles. It can be two symmetrically hanging canvases or one wide one that will move to one side or the other. You will need to buy a piece of fabric, and for its width and length it is not enough to know the parameters of the desired finished product, because you need to take into account all the numerous allowances.

For normal weight fabrics, the width of the finished product is usually doubled, but a hem allowance of about 4 centimeters on each side should also be included. If the fabric has an even denser structure, then to form folds you need to take an even greater width, already a multiple of not two, but three. The same calculations are made when determining the length. There will be no horizontal folds, but you need to take into account the room for maneuver. In addition to the length for possible hemming from below, sewing on any fastening system and insurance in case the curtain shrinks during washing - about 25 centimeters are usually laid on all these nuances. You must determine the length of the finished canvas yourself, floor-to-ceiling curtains will look good for some interior, and short cafe-style curtains will be appropriate somewhere.

There are no difficulties and difficulties in this method, you can do without master classes on do-it-yourself curtains (video you definitely don't need it). So, our piece of fabric is ready, and first we will deal with the processing of the sides. On each side, we make a hem about 1.5-2 centimeters wide, we baste it with large stitches or do not do it at all, but most importantly, we iron the fold well. After that, we wrap it again by the same amount, fix it and make a machine stitch along the entire length. After that, you can start processing the bottom - we bend 5 centimeters to the wrong side, also iron it, and then we make a second bend, also 5 centimeters and sew it. With the top, we need to do something a little differently, for its processing we need a special curtain tape, which we need to buy at the hardware store. We lay out the curtain face up, put a ribbon along the upper edge, the side edge of which is slightly wrapped inside out. Use pins to pin the tape along its entire length, top and bottom, or, to save in a checkerboard pattern, cut off the excess tape at the end, and also wrap the tip inside out. With threads matching the color of the ribbon, sew it along the bottom edge, retreating about 1 centimeter. We also sew the edges that we so carefully folded. Now we make a trick and bend the tape to the wrong side so that this line is now at your very top. In order to fix it with a line below, you need to change the shuttle thread in the machine to desired color, and leave the top white, then on the front you will have a colored line, and on the tape - white. In the middle of the tape, you also need to stitch, but make sure that the line does not get into the places where special guide threads are sewn. Now we just have to pull them and a miracle happens - the fabric will gather into neat folds. We iron all the seams well, iron the fabric of the curtain itself and we can fix it on the cornice - it is completely ready.

To create without lambrequins or complex draperies, you can use an unusual type of attachment to the eaves - eyelets. They are metal rings that are sewn into the upper fold of the fabric, so that later the fabric can be easily strung on the beam of a narrow cornice with their help. Since they are strung perpendicular to the cornice itself, wide, solemn folds will form on their own (subject to sufficient density of the fabric).

DIY curtains for the kitchen

unusual views do-it-yourself curtains for the kitchen are used more and more often. Ordinary textiles often do not withstand difficult technological conditions in those kitchens whose housewives devote a lot of time to cooking. For this, fabric upholstery is not used in the kitchen, or you will have to work closely. What options can be offered not from textiles, which are perfectly washed and cleaned?

It can be bamboo curtains, which are made from thin twigs. This material is perfect for East style kitchens. We string each straw on a fishing line or woolen thread along, and when the length is already enough, we fix all the finished threads on the eaves. For a glamorous interior, you can offer very popular bead pendants that will create a special mood by refracting sunlight and filling the room with colorful sunbeams. By the same principle, you can make jewelry by replacing the beads with animal figurines, your own plastic crafts, buttons.

It will be easiest to work with thick fishing line, but there are options with beautiful satin ribbons or elegant cords, which themselves add the desired texture to the curtains. We fix each strung part either on carnations, or, so that you can move the structure, on the rings of the cornice.

DIY Roman blinds

Do DIY roman blinds can be from any fabric. But if you want complete blackout, then choose a special very dense material, it can be ordered on specialized sites. It is also worth taking care of the exterior of your home and making this type of curtain double-sided.

If you have an interior roman, do-it-yourself curtains must match it in texture and color. However, for country or Provence, this option is considered the most suitable.

To create you do not need complex patterns and even a large number additional materials. You can use fasteners from old blinds or make them from a wooden cornice with holes for the threads. Guide horizontal strips are sewn into the canvas at an equal distance from each other, threads are sewn vertically through the entire canvas, which, when pulled together, raise the entire structure with beautiful folds.

DIY roller blinds

Roman varieties are roller blinds. DIY they can be made very simply - they are sold with a special kit, which includes a canvas and a fastening system - a cylinder on which the fabric is wound, opening and closing the window.

The beauty of this species is that for such do-it-yourself curtains patterns are not needed at all, it will be enough to cut off the rectangle, fill it with fasteners, and screw the entire system to the sash (for opening windows) or to the frame (for blind windows). An ideal version of the room, they close with just one movement of the hand, and look very decorative.

How to sew curtains with your own hands? This question arises for many women, since atelier services are quite expensive and there is a desire to save money. family budget and make your own curtains.
The processing of an organza curtain of a simple model for a window in the kitchen is indeed accessible to many who have a little experience and a sewing machine. But to sew curtains in a living room or a hall with a pelmet, this is the lot of professionals who have not only knowledge, but also experience.
Perhaps the first piece of advice that will be in this article - do not overestimate your strength, do not start your experience in sewing curtains with complex models. First, learn how to correctly and beautifully sew an ordinary organza curtain for the kitchen, sew the curtain tape correctly and accurately calculate the fabric consumption. Curtains are a simple type of curtain, most often seen on kitchen windows or country house. Every woman can sew such a curtain, since curtain braid is not required and the simplest fastening to the cornice with clips is used.

I suggest that you study the most common and simple techniques and rules for sewing curtains that do not require patterns and complex processing. With the help of these tips, you can correctly and beautifully sew simple ordinary curtains for the kitchen, living room or children's room from curtain fabric, tulle or organza.
If you later need to learn more about how to sew curtains more complex models, you can use the numerous articles and videos available on the Internet.

How to calculate fabric consumption per curtain

So, we are faced with the task of sewing a simple curtain of two halves and a curtain of tulle or organza. Both curtains and drapes will be held onto the cornice with curtain tape. It is this window design option that demonstrates the top photo. These curtains hang in our atelier and of course we sewed them ourselves.

The first thing to do is determine the fabric consumption and calculate how much curtain tape you need to buy. To do this, of course, you need to measure the height of the curtains and the width of the window. It would seem something easier. However, it is these measurements that often cause spoiled work.

First, decide what level the curtains will be in relation to the floor. Level with the floor or slightly higher, or maybe the edge of the curtain will even lie on the floor. Why lie? Because if you use tiebacks and various garters, then you need to consider that the curtain should be a little longer.

Now you need to decide on the cornice and figure out how the curtain will be located in relation to the cornice. If the top row of curtain tape loops is used for attaching to the hooks of the cornice, then the height should be calculated from the bottom of the hook to the floor plus 1.5 - 2.0 cm. If the curtain is attached to the lower edge of the loops of the curtain tape, then you need to add not 1.5 cm, but more. It will depend on how wide the curtain tape is (2.5 - 10 cm).

Now let's decide on the width of the curtains and calculate the total fabric consumption. The height of the curtain does not affect the fabric consumption, since the width of organza or tulle, curtain fabric, as a rule, has a standard 2.8 - 3.0 meters. Fabric consumption is affected only by the type of curtain tape, the width of the cornice or the number of folds laid by hand.

If we assume that you have one window, for example in the kitchen, 130 cm wide, then how much organza do you need to buy in order to sew the curtain correctly?
On any curtain, the folds are laid either manually, then the curtain tape is sewn over these folds, or the folds are formed by tightening the cords of the curtain tape. In order for the folds to form correctly, a coefficient (1 / 1.5; 1/2: 1/3) is indicated for each curtain braid. We choose a coefficient of 2, then both the curtain tape and organza need to be bought exactly twice as much as the width of the cornice. Note that the width of the cornice, not the window, as the shade will run from edge to edge of the cornice. And yet, you need to add at least 10 cm to the possible alignment of the edges of the curtains and the hem of the sides. Curtain tape also needs to be bought with a margin.

Now let's recap. In order to sew an organza curtain for one window with a size of 130 cm, you need to multiply the length of the cornice (150 cm) by 2 and add 10 cm. So, you need to buy 310 cm of organza and 350 cm of curtain tape, with an assembly factor of 1/2. The same calculation can be used for curtains of two halves, just in case, add not 10 cm, but 15 - 20 cm, since the fabric will have to be aligned and various inaccuracies are possible.

It’s good if you bought a fabric with a pattern, and it was easier for the sellers to cut the fabric correctly according to the pattern and it would be easier for you to adjust the side cuts. Another thing is when the curtain fabric or tulle does not have a pattern. Then inaccuracies are possible in the store and it will be difficult for you to align the cut edge. That's why you need to buy fabric for curtains almost always with a small margin.

How to check if there is a skew in the side seams? The easiest way is with organza. As a rule, organza is well torn along the shared or transverse thread, it is enough just to cut the edge with scissors and tear off along the entire length. Only I do not advise doing this if you are not sure that it is possible. It is better to lay it out on the floor and carefully trim the edge with scissors, and then hang it taut from the ceiling and make sure that there is no skew. But, this is usually difficult to do for inexpensive fabrics that do not have a tight weave. Better and more expensive fabrics do not warp, and sellers try to cut more accurately and evenly.
In general, before you start sewing curtains, make sure that the sides of the curtain or curtain are perpendicular to the horizontal line of the floor or ceiling.

Before sewing curtains, adjust the sewing machine

In order to qualitatively and beautifully sew a curtain on your own, you need to know not only the technology of sewing curtains, but also be able to adjust sewing machine. Drapery fabrics, organza, tulle require an appropriate adjustment of the tension of the upper and lower threads, a properly selected needle. And the quality of the thread itself affects the quality of the line. It is best that the threads are thin, strong and elastic. So that on the front side of the curtain, especially on light fabrics, the thread is almost invisible.

In order to sew the curtains beautifully, you must definitely put a new sewing needle in the machine. Do not sew the hem with thick or blunt needles, as many fabrics will leave puncture marks on the right side.

If you want the seams to be invisible, the stitching does not tighten the fabric, especially thin organza, be sure to set the stitch length to an average value (3-5), adjust the thread tension and presser foot pressure. Set the height of the rack teeth so that they do not "gather" the tulle when the fabric is advanced. If one of the conditions is not met, the seam will tighten, and you will not iron it with any iron. Some seamstresses simply pull the edge of the curtain while sewing, which is also not always justified and can lead to needle breakage and stretching of the edge of the curtain and the appearance of "waves" on the sides of the curtain.

Do not forget that many curtain fabrics cannot be sewn twice, as traces of needle punctures remain. Therefore, be sure to take a small piece of fabric and check how the sewing machine will sew this fabric, and at the same time adjust the above parameters.

How to properly and accurately cut curtains

Before you process the edges of the curtains and sew on the curtain braid, you need to build a simple curtain pattern, or rather make a small sketch on a piece of paper with calculations for the dimensions of the curtain, tulle. And then cut the fabric from above or below and align the sides.

If you have already decided on the height of the curtain and accurately calculated the "working" length and width, taking into account the position in relation to the eaves, now you need to add 10 cm for the bottom (double) hem and 2 cm for the top hem, where the curtain tape will be adjusted. To process the sides, the increase should be made small, within 1 - 1.5 cm. For tulle and organza, 1 cm is enough, for heavy curtain fabrics - 1.5 cm.

Processing the cut edge of the curtain in the hem

Before sewing the curtain, you must first process the side cuts with a seam in a hem or with an oblique trim. However, to sew a curtain yourself with beautiful and evenly finished edges, you need not only a good sewing machine, but also the ability to perform these operations.
It is not difficult to process the edge with a rolled seam on an overlock, but it is not easy to process the edge "in a hem" or with an oblique trim. An experienced seamstress does not even iron the edge, but "by eye" makes the edge hem without a special foot and the line goes exactly 0.1 from the edge of the hem. You may also have to iron the edge of the hem twice, and then baste with a thread. The same applies to oblique inlay.

Processing curtains with oblique trim

To prevent the line from forming a fit, it is necessary to pull the edge of the curtain processed into a hem or oblique trim with both hands. Just do not pull on yourself, and do not stretch, namely, pull (so that there is no slack), and even so as not to mix the fabric and break the needle. However, no matter how hard you try, you can’t do without landing completely; anyway, the hemmed edge of the curtain will need to be ironed well with a hot iron with steam.

A 5 cm double hem (10 in total) will look much more "solid" and create additional weight on the bottom edge of the curtain, so I recommend making a hem at least 5 cm. curtains. Just iron the top hem (2 cm) and start sewing on the curtain tape. There is a separate article on the site about "How to sew a curtain tape".
It is impossible to explain all the nuances in one article. how to sew curtains with your own hands, but I hope that some of these tips will be useful to you.

Video on how to process the edges of the curtains and sew on the curtain tape.

Stylish curtains in the interior - a dream come true! Thanks to the abundance of fabrics, it is easy to choose any fabric to decorate the interior in a single style. Ordering tailoring in the atelier is expensive. If the hostess wants to decorate the house and save the family budget at the same time, she can sew curtains. To do this, you need a sewing machine and the ability to handle it.

Before starting work, you need to purchase:

  • tool - sewing machine;
  • fabric and threads suitable for it;
  • a set of needles and pins;
  • measuring ruler and centimeter;
  • tailor's scissors;
  • iron.

How to sew curtains (step by step instructions)

To sew quality products, you need to prepare a pattern and check how the sewing machine works with the fabric you need.

  1. help sewing machine a few stitches on a small piece of fabric to make sure the stitching is even.
  2. Sketch the future curtain on paper. The most simple model- This is 1 or 2 pieces of rectangular material.
  3. Patterns are applied to the fabric and circled.
  4. Scissors cut off a piece of fabric.
  5. To sew the top edge. Fold up the allowance at the top and stitch the curtain ribbon.
  6. Tuck and finish the side cuts. Inside the seams, remove the edges of the ribbon so that, if desired, you can pull the edges and tuck the curtains.
  7. Fold the bottom of the product and sew. Fasten the threads and iron the finished curtain.
  8. Iron finished products.

Material selection

You can safely sew from taffeta: real material almost does not fade at all and is well washed. Silk will reflect excess light. When choosing, give preference to cream or pastel colors: brighter shades may fade. polyester can withstand multiple washes. Linen is the perfect choice for a child's room: it won't fade, just like viscose or velvet.

The color scheme of products designed for rooms that face south should be cool. This palette may include blue, blue, green, gray. The denser the fabric, the better. In the summer heat, curtains will save you from the heat. When there is not enough sunlight in the room, it is better to choose fabrics painted in light shades: orange, yellow, beige and red. Here, products made of light fabric of transparent color look great. When we choose a fabric and sew curtains on our own, you can adjust inner space: Vertical stripes make the room look taller, while horizontal stripes make it look wider.

Practical organza products are popular: they are easy to wash and do not require ironing. For the kitchen it is recommended to use natural fabrics:. However, on the sunny side, cotton fabric quickly fades and loses its attractiveness. Blinds will help protect products from the sun.

Measure and cut

If we sew curtains ourselves, then we calculate the amount of material on our own. We determine the consumption of fabric and curtain tape. It is better to take it with a margin of 50 cm. Measurements are made from the eaves to the bottom edge of the products. Consider the consumption of material for the hem. Curtains are either long or short. You can sew beautiful curtains that cover radiators or barely reach the windowsill.

Measurements on the fabric should be marked on the edge. Measure the width and pull a couple of threads out of the fabric to outline where to cut. Cotton and blended fabrics should be moistened and ironed so that they do not sit in the product.

Sewing

Before sewing curtains, it is necessary to adjust the equipment. It is better to insert a new needle into the sewing machine. Pre-adjust the mode of its operation. Optimal value stitch length is considered 4-6. You need to adjust the thread tension with the presser foot. The desired height of the rack teeth is also set so that the seam does not tighten the fabric. Curtains can not be altered several times: visible traces remain from the seams.

Tailoring of curtains

Curtain tape is sewn as follows:

  1. Align the curtain and on the wrong side, hem about 2 cm.
  2. Heat the iron slightly and iron the hem.
  3. To prevent the tape from moving out, tuck it in 1.5 cm and pin it with a pin.
  4. First make the top stitch at a distance of 0.3 or 0.5 mm from the edge of the tape. In this case, the braid must be hidden.
  5. Run the bottom line.
  6. Pull the cords and tie them in a knot so they don't run away.
  7. Cut off excess pieces of tape.

Making curtains on eyelets

Adaptation - grommet greatly facilitates the process of hanging curtains and curtains. The new solution fits perfectly into concise styles interior. You can also sew curtains with rings for hanging at home.

Shops offer beautiful, but standard curtains for decorating houses and apartments. But you want your own housing to be not just cozy and beautiful, but unique and individual, reflecting the inner world of the owners and based on their preferences. To fulfill such a dream without spending all the savings on it, you can do it in one way: sew the curtains yourself. Such a task is within the power of any person who has the desire to create. Tips on what exactly to create and how to do it effectively can be found in our article.

Ideas for sewing curtains: what curtains you can sew yourself

Ideas for your own creativity can be drawn from the history of curtains: from the skins of animals that hung the caves to the magnificent decorations of the palace halls with luxurious tassels, draperies and multi-layered compositions. Modern technologies allow the use of new materials for curtains: crease-resistant, non-flammable and not exposed to ultraviolet radiation. Current fashion trends regarding curtains are back in old days when great attention was paid to textile decoration.

Curtains with lambrequin

Curtains with decorative lambrequin are most often used in living rooms.

But, due to the fact that a lambrequin can not only decorate a window and give it a complete look, but has quite practical functions: it hides cornices and curtain fastening systems - it can be used in all rooms.

The only condition is compliance with the style of the room in terms of form, choice of material and design. Lambrequins with draperies are appropriate in the central room; they will create an atmosphere of comfort and luxury in combination with other interior items.

Rigid lambrequin frame - gang, made of fabric or plastic, can be used in the kitchen and bedroom.

Roman style

The highlight of Roman blinds is a specific canvas made of noble types of dense fabric: jacquard, satin, muslin with a large geometric pattern or without a pattern. practical curtains in Roman style modern apartment, made in ethnic or minimalist style, look organic on the balcony, kitchen, bathroom and library, as well as in the living room and bedroom.

English style

For those who want to give their home an aristocratic spirit based on a combination of simplicity and nobility, they will like curtains in English style. The basis of such curtains is an even rectangular canvas. Cords threaded through sewn rings are controlled lifting mechanism, thereby creating folds: wavy, bow or puff. The number of folds may depend on the size of the window opening or the preferences of the owners.

Classic

Classic curtains made of two panels are the simplest option, but also the most popular. Various ways fasteners: loops, ties, drawstrings, eyelets - make the classics boring. Having done classic curtains bilateral, it is possible to increase their functionality and decorative effect.

From two long even canvases, using various technical devices, you can make stylistic compositions:

  • "hourglass";
  • Japanese curtains;
  • Italian curtains.

The location of the curtains determines the choice of fabric, which can be the simplest: linen or calico and the most respectable: brocade, satin, velor, wool.

French curtains

Curtains based on the traditions of lush France, gathered along the entire length, form narrow scallops. Such curtains are sewn - "marquises" from delicate, elastic fabrics: tulle, satin, silk, veil, chiffon, organza. "Marquise" is a curtain for those for whom beauty in the interior is ahead of functionality.

Fabric consumption for curtains

The process of making curtains should begin with the purchase of fabric. Even if the choice is on a simple model, it is necessary to correctly calculate the required amount of fabric for sewing.

The main parameters that you need to pay attention to are the width of the canvas and the direction of the pattern on it. If there is a desire to make drapery in the plans - the assembly coefficient (COP), which is expressed in the ratio of the cut to the width of the finished curtain. To determine how much to buy matter in this case, it is necessary to multiply the width of the finished curtain by the COP.

CS depends on the type of tissue:

  • for a curtain, it is 1.7;
  • for tulle with a pattern - 2;
  • for tulle without a pattern - 3.

Tulle in a roll

Textiles for tailoring are sold in rolls. The standard width of a tulle roll is 2 m 80 cm. In order not to make mistakes in the calculations when buying tulle in a roll, it is necessary to measure the size of the cornice in advance and multiply it by the COP for this type of fabric. This condition is suitable only for rooms with a ceiling height of not more than 2.5-2.6 m.

Curtain in a roll

The range of curtain fabric in rolls has three standard widths:

  • 1.40 m;
  • 2.80 m;

If the length of the conceived curtain fits into this width and the pattern is located from edge to edge, the fabric is calculated according to the same formula as tulle: cornice width x COP (for a curtain it is 1.7).

The calculation of the fabric will be different if the pattern is located along the edge and the width of the roll is less than the height of the future finished curtain. When stitching together several canvases, you should remember to combine the pattern between them. In this case, the fabric will need more - exactly 1 rapport, that is, a finished fragment of the drawing.

Pattern direction on roll

The direction of the pattern, or rapport, in a roll can be:

  • edge to edge;
  • along the edge.

If the pattern in the roll has a transverse direction, then the width of the fabric is equal to the height of the finished curtain. Payment is made for running meter curtain width. This option is suitable if there is a need to make a curtain for a very wide window.

If the pattern has a direction along the roll, then the width of the fabric is equal to the width of the finished curtain. Payment is made per linear meter of curtain height. This option limits the width of the curtain, but is suitable for sewing curtains with a ceiling of any height.

How to make a pattern

If the idea of \u200b\u200bready-made curtains has developed in your head, everything you need for tailoring is ready, you should go to the store to buy fabric.

Beforehand, it is necessary to make calculations so that the money spent on the purchase of fabric is not let into the air: with a shortage or excess of material.

Fabric Calculation Examples

To calculate the fabric, you will need the following parameters:

  • the height of the product, equal to the distance between the floor and the cornice hooks, minus the distance between the floor and the lower edge of the curtain;
  • width equal to the length of the cornice - from one extreme hook to the other.

So, we determine that the height of the finished product will be 2 meters 60 centimeters. The width of the thick curtains will be 5 meters 10 centimeters, according to the calculations: 3 * 1.7 = 5.1, where 3 m is the length of the cornice, and 1.7 is the assembly factor recommended for this type of fabric.

In the store we buy fabric with a length of 5.1 m with a standard roll width of 2.8 m.

cutting

Before cutting, in order to avoid subsequent shrinkage, it is worth moistening the fabric, wringing it out slightly and leaving it wrapped in a towel for several hours. Then take out the fabric and iron it from the inside out.

cook necessary tools:

  • scissors are large;
  • a piece of soap;
  • English pins;
  • meter;
  • ruler.

When cutting parts, it is necessary to focus on the direction of the shared thread so that the product does not deform during operation. Open to start with large canvases:

  1. Lay the canvas on the floor wrong side up;
  2. Place the pattern pieces on the fabric.
  3. Circle them with soap, taking into account the seam allowances equal to 1cm.
  4. Leave 10 cm above and below the canvas.
  5. Leave 4 cm for processing the sidewalls.

How to join canvases

When sewing curtains made of dense fabrics, so that there is no noticeable butt seam, it is better to connect them using the “unstitched” joint technology. Previously, the places of cuts must be processed with an overlock.

When connecting parts made of thin fabric, you can use an oblique inlay.

Seam types

When sewing curtains, two seams are used mainly:

  • Roller - a narrow overcasting seam, with a minimum stitch frequency.

Moscow - edge seam "in the hem" with a closed cut, performed by two lines of which, visible on the front side, as a result, only one turns out.

Fabric hem

So that the result does not disappoint, it is very important to correctly hem the fabric, according to the rules:

  • A double hem makes the edge of the curtain even, but it is not suitable for curtains with a gasket.
  • Basting should be done with long stitches to avoid deformation.
  • Before ironing the hem, it is better to fix the curtain with pins.
  • Before hemming the bottom edge of the curtain, let it hang for a couple of days beforehand.

Hemming can be done using a sewing machine with a zigzag stitch, adhesive tape, or by hand with hem or blind stitches.

Hinged curtains

Curtains on hinges are an option for framing windows in a studio apartment of a young family, a kitchen space or a nursery. The peculiarity of this type of curtain is that, apart from the fabric, no additional devices are required. A hinged curtain is a finished piece of fabric with decorative loops.

Step by step master class will help you understand the intricacies of this simple process:

  • Cut out 2 pieces of fabric using the above cutting technology.
  • Overstitch the upper part of the canvas, having prepared the detail - a strip of fabric with a length equal to the width of the curtain and a width of 10 centimeters.
  • Glue non-woven tape onto the strip.
