DIY garage door types. Garage doors: do-it-yourself manufacturing details

Gates are an indispensable component of any garage, because they protect inner space from intrusion by outsiders. In addition, garage doors should play the role of a strong and reliable fourth wall, not be afraid of temperature changes, humidity, and look attractive in appearance. The easiest way is to buy them or order production, but this will not save money and will not be as pleasant as if you built a garage door with your own hands. After reading this article, you will learn how you can make strong gates with simple tools.

If buying ready-made gates does not appeal to you, then there is only one way out - to make them yourself. And the reason for this may not be so much the financial side, but the need to create something useful and durable, which will be pleasant to use every day. And while walls, foundations, and roofs protect your car from the weather, gates perform a much more important function - they protect the car from possible theft and damage. If the gate is strong and reliable, you can not be afraid to leave expensive tools and other items in the garage that have no place in the house.

There are several types of gates according to the opening principle, and in this article we will look at the step-by-step creation of swing and lifting structures. Thus, you can evaluate and compare the features of both systems and choose the best one.

Swing garage doors, as you might guess from the name, swing open, opening access to the room. They consist of one or two wings, a frame, hinges and other elements. The size of the doors and the number of fittings on them can be very different, so work should begin with the creation of a detailed drawing. If you will install the gate in an existing doorway, then you need to build on its size, however, if you plan to reduce or increase the opening, take into account the following recommendations:

  1. There should be at least 30 cm from the side of the car to the gate post. It is better to increase the distance in case you use the same garage for a larger car in the future.
  2. The opening should be at least 2 m high, but it is better to make it 2.1-2.4 m.
  3. Choose steel sheets with a thickness of at least 3 mm.

Assembly of swing garage doors

For standard swing gate you will need sheet metal, metal corners, a profile, hinges, latches and locks. To work with metal, prepare a welding machine and a grinder, a square, a tape measure and a building level will also come in handy.

Making garage doors

  1. First of all, you need to assemble the frame. To do this, you need a welding machine and elementary skills in handling it. Cut the profile into separate elements with a grinder in accordance with the parameters in the drawing, lay them out on a flat plane, weld the seams and clean them to get a perfectly smooth surface. Seams are the most vulnerable point from which corrosion and destruction begin, so do not neglect processing. In addition, if they are not smooth, future sashes will not be able to close tightly. Make the outer and inner frame in the same way.
  2. Next, from a 60x20 metal profile, weld a frame for each sash. Check the evenness of the corners with a square. Leave a small gap between the sections and the frame, so that later it would be convenient to open the doors.
  3. Attach sheet metal to the frame so that the leaf of the left sash goes onto the frame of the right one by a couple of centimeters, and the right one, therefore, should already be at the same distance.
  4. Loops are best prepared in advance. Weld the lower part of the hinge to the frame, the upper to the canvas. To make the fastening stronger, use reinforcement by welding it on the inside.
  5. To increase security, in addition to the usual lock, it is better to use a deadbolt by installing it on the inside of the gate. But it is rational to make a deadbolt only if the design provides for a gate. So you first enter the garage through the gate, open the bolt from the inside and open the gate completely. Locks can be mortise or padlock. In the first case, additional metal plastic is required for installation, and in the second, external loops. It is better not to limit yourself to one lock, but to put 2-3 at once, so that if one of them breaks down, you can still close the garage.
  6. It remains only to paint the gate, and this must be done before installation. Painting is necessary not so much for aesthetics as to protect metal components from corrosion. Accordingly, for this it is necessary to use a weather-resistant anti-corrosion paint for metal. It can be applied manually with a brush or roller, or with aerosols, which is much faster and more convenient. Before applying paint, the surface should be primed. It is better to apply the paint in 2-3 layers and renew the coating every couple of years.

Installation of swing garage doors

When the paint dries, you can install swing sectional garage doors. To fix the inner and outer parts of the frame, use metal pins about 15 cm long. Fix them in the slopes, cut and grind the ends so that they do not impede the closing of the wings. Fasten the two parts of the frame together with steel plates 4 mm thick, welding every 50 cm, after which the finished sashes can be hung on hinges.

At this stage, it is worth thinking about insulating the garage door, since almost 50% of the heat escapes through them alone. If you prepare elementary materials, it is very easy to do. Knock down a wooden crate of lumber, fix it from the inside of the wings, and then fill it with insulation. As thermal insulation, you can use the cheapest materials, for example, stone wool or foam. You can close the crate with a clapboard.

Lifting garage doors

Lifting garage doors are very popular, but it seems to many that it is completely impossible to make them yourself without the appropriate experience. In this part of the article we will try to prove the opposite. First of all, let's consider what the design itself is and what are its advantages compared to the swing. Opening, the leaf of such gates on hinges rises under the ceiling of the garage, moving from a vertical position to a horizontal one. Thus, it takes up much less space than swing doors.

There are two types of overhead gate construction:

In the case of such gates, the noiselessness of their operation plays an important role, since their design does not involve the use of rollers with guides, but the decisive factor is that you can make it yourself. To do this, you do not need special skills and large financial investments.

Lifting garage doors

The lifting and turning structure consists of a frame, a sash and a lifting mechanism. For the frame, you can use not only steel, but also wooden beams that are installed in the opening. Guide profiles are placed in the door frame, along which the gate will move when raised and lowered.

The obvious advantage of up-and-over doors is the integrity of the leaf. It can be made of wood, it can be sheathed with sandwich panels or metal. Whole wooden canvas it will cost quite a lot, while it will weigh a lot, and the material itself is not as stable and durable as plastic or metal, although it looks beautiful. The best and most common options are wooden or plastic panels and sheet steel. Sandwich panels in this regard are even better, since they play the role of cladding and thermal insulation. Other materials will need to be additionally insulated with foam or stone wool slabs.

Lifting garage door technology

Before installing garage door roller shutters, you need to decide on the opening mechanism.

There are two types of devices:

  1. Hinged-lever - a popular solution that guarantees a simple sash movement and anti-blocking of the leaf. However, such a mechanism requires a very precise installation of the guides, as well as a scrupulous adjustment of the spring tension, which is hardly possible for a beginner to do. If you do not set the guides strictly vertically and parallel to each other, the shield will be blocked.
  2. On counterweights - the principle of operation is that the cable attached to the lower corners of the frame and passed through the block leads to the winch pulley, and a counterweight is fixed at its other end. The heavier the door leaf, the heavier this counterweight should be. However, it should be taken into account that the structure is subjected to heavy loads, therefore it is mainly used for the construction of massive gates, and for private garages for 1 car I use a hinged-lever mechanism.

When you have decided on the project of the future gate, transferred the dimensions of the opening and developed a sketch, it's time to prepare the tools and materials.

Consider the construction of a lifting gate using the example of a structure for which you will need the following:

  • steel pins (cuttings of reinforcement 15-18 cm long);
  • wooden beam 120x80 (racks) and 100x100 (crossbar);
  • steel corners 40x40x4 and 3.5x3.5x0.4;
  • channel bracket 8x4.3x0.5;
  • spring d30 mm;
  • plywood boards;
  • Sheet steel;
  • steel bar d8 mm.

How to install garage doors:

  1. Take 2 racks, a crossbar and bring down the box by connecting the parts with corners or plates. lower part bury in concrete screed by 2 cm.
  2. Fix the box in the opening with steel pins.
  3. Assemble the canvas frame and sheathe it with plywood, attach sheet iron from the outside.
  4. From the corner, create a support for the mechanism.
  5. In one of the shelves, make a hole for fixing to the racks, in the other, make holes for the spring bracket. To secure the bracket that will be used as a support for the spring, drill 3 holes.
  6. Make an adjusting plate from a steel strip and use it to connect the spring to the bracket. Bend the extreme coils of the spring with pliers to make hooks, and attach a steel bar from below.
  7. From the corner, make a hinged corner and weld it to the frame. In this way you will be able to mount the lifting arm on a 12 cm swivel.
  8. Attach the plate for the tension regulator to the end of the lever.
  9. From a couple of corners, build guide rails for the gate itself. To do this, weld the corners along the edge, making sure that the internal distance between the tops is strictly 5 cm along the entire length.
  10. Attach the rail to the plate, leaving an 8 cm gap between the lower end of the cross member and the axle.
  11. Attach a channel to the other end 12-15 cm from the bottom, then attach it to the ceiling beam (use a bolted connection).
  12. At each stage, before you fasten anything, check the horizontality of the guides.

Useful advice: to make it brighter in the garage, blind windows can be made in the canvas. To give the structure additional strength and to avoid accidental bumps and damage, glue a rubber edging with compensating pads to the canvas.

Finally, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the video, where the garage doors of the lifting type are shown in all details:

Recently, the artistic painting of garage doors is gaining great popularity. Special Demand enjoy drawings with 3D effect:

So this is his gate. In the article you will find useful information about how to make a gate to the garage (lifting and swinging, as well as what types exist, their advantages and disadvantages.

A garage in our time is not a sign of luxury, but a necessity. A private car is much better kept indoors than outdoors. So it is more reliable for you, and for your "iron horse".

And you can keep a huge number of necessary and unnecessary things in it. Residents of the countryside have the opportunity to equip a garage on their own land plot, building a house together with him or separately, to whom it is convenient.

Types of garage doors

Most types of garage doors appeared in our country relatively recently, under the influence of technologies used in Western countries. What is it worth appearance lifting gates that we are used to seeing in American films. Now you won't surprise anyone here.

Swing

They should close tightly without leaving gaps. Even a beginner can easily make such gates. Often a gate is cut out in one leaf at the garage door. This is convenient when you just need to enter the room without opening the gate completely.

The advantage is that they do not require large financial costs. They have a small drawback - they need free space in front of the garage, which will allow them to open wide. AT winter time will have to work with a shovel.

Rollback

Such garage doors appeared around the 1st half of the 20th century. They are a sash that goes to the side wall. There are garages with double-leaf sliding gates, then they move in different directions or with one multi-section folding sash.

Most often, such gates are used in hangars and industrial enterprises. In a private building, sliding gates are placed not in the garage premises themselves, but for entering the territory.

lifting and turning

Garage doors are relatively new. This is one leaf that rises to the ceiling during the opening of the gate and stops parallel to the floor.

Such a move of the gate is carried out with the help of a hinged-lever mechanism and guides. The advantage of such gates is that they do not need a lot of space either in the garage itself or in front of it.

Such garage doors are most often installed in warm regions or in garages with heating. Yes, and the snow, in any case, will have to be cleaned, as well as in front of a garage with swing gates, otherwise you will not drive into it.

Lifting sectional

Gates for the garage appeared on the market of our country recently.

This is a multi-section canvas that folds up and drives along the leads under the ceiling.

To start the gate into operation, a mechanism on a spring and guides with a chain transmission are used. Gates are good because they save a lot of space.

Best suited for areas with a warm and mild climate. Or the room must be heated. The reason lies in the fact that the lever mechanisms at low temperatures can jam, and it is not possible to open or close the gate.

Roller shutters

Garage doors are rarely installed. The lack of gates to the garage in the unreliability of the design. These are aluminum plates that fold into a special box under the ceiling. It is best to use roller shutters in protected and heated premises.

Gates of all types can be made self-acting, coming off with a key fob.

Before choosing a garage door, study the pros and cons different types gate, read the reviews on the forums, ask the opinion of friends, relatives.

Decide which garage door you need, beautiful or easy to use. For those who want to make a gate to the garage with their own hands, swing doors are most suitable. This is the most reliable type of gate with a simple design.

Instructions for the manufacture of swing gates to the garage

swing gate- the simplest type of construction.

To make them, you will need the following set.

materials

Tool

  1. Apparatus for welding and electrodes.
  2. A generator of electricity, the power of which is enough to operate the tool (in the absence of electricity).
  3. Roulette.
  4. Grinder.
  5. large locksmiths made of metal.
  6. Drill and drilling machine. Drill.
  7. and a set of screws.

Work progress

Before starting work, it is necessary to draw up a drawing of the garage door. To do this, you need to make a sketch indicating measurements and materials. The minimum width of the gate for the garage should be formed taking into account the distance from the car on both sides to the frame was at least 30 cm and reached 2.5 - 3 meters. The wider the gate, the easier it is to get inside.

Important!

The distance from the frame to the parallel wall must be at least 80 cm. The height of the garage door is formed taking into account the dimensions of the car. Often varies between 2 - 2.5 m.

The design of swing gates is a frame with hinges on both sides, a frame and the gate itself. The frame is made from a 65 mm steel corner. For the sash frame, take corners made of 50 mm steel or a rectangular steel profile, which is sheathed with an iron sheet 2–3 mm thick. Loops need reinforced external.

Garage door frame

Work on installing a garage door begins with a frame, which is made in conjunction with the construction of the main wall.

At the stage of masonry readiness, 50 cm high, you need to start installing the gate, and then return to laying the wall.

For the frame, it is necessary to take corners made of steel 65 mm, metal strips 20 - 30 mm wide and 3 - 4 mm thick, reinforcing bar. The frame itself consists of 2 parts: internal and external.

Bulgarian cut the corner into 4 parts. The length must correspond to the height of the gate opening. We lay the segments on the floor, check the level. We measure the angles, all should be 90 º and fasten by welding - we get the frame.

Important! If the corner led during welding, this can be straightened out using the lever attached to it from the remnants of the corner. This will help straighten out the geometry of the frame. Hold it in the correct position and cook the corners to it.

Sash frame

The sash frame is made smaller than the gate frame for ease of entry into the opening, and the sashes themselves should be tightly adjacent to outside frames. In the work on the manufacture of the frame, a rectangular profile or corners made of steel are used.

We divide the material into 4 segments, the length is less than the height of the frame by 10 - 15 mm. This is necessary so that the sashes freely enter the opening. For the manufacture of two wings, we take 4 horizontal segments equal to the width of the gate frame, divided in half, and minus 30 - 35 mm.

We place the segments on the floor, measure the angles. We place them inside the already finished frame. This makes it easier to see the flaws and eliminate them.

gate leaves

For the manufacture of valves take sheets of steel, 2 mm thick. 2 canvases are cut out of the material with dimensions: the height is 3-4 cm more than the height of the garage opening.

The width is different: one is 1-2 cm wider than the frame, the second is 2 cm larger. The canvas is attached to the frame by welding. At the top and bottom of the canvas go beyond the frame by 1 - 2 cm.

The width of the canvas of one of the wings does not reach the edge of the frame, there should be 1 cm of margin. The second sash is installed in such a way as to extend beyond the frame by 2 - 4 cm.

Important! The sheet material is susceptible to deformation during welding, in connection with this, before starting work, it is necessary to grab the corners and the center of the web by welding, then attach the entire sheet pointwise at a distance of 10 - 15 cm.

Next, you need to weld reinforced hinges. The lower half is attached to the gate frame, and the upper half is attached to the leaf that will open. At the final stage of installing the gate to the garage, we fix the locks. He considers a popular type of constipation to be one in which one of the doors is locked with locks inside the garage.

Holes are made in the frame at a depth of up to 5 cm. The second sash is locked with a lock, the tongue of which clings to the fixed sash or fits into a deliberately made hole in the sash frame.

Externally, the structure is strengthened with a padlock, which is passed through the ears attached to the sashes and connects the sashes together. For insulation of garage doors, foam plastic or any other modern materials are taken.

Today there are a huge number of designs of garage doors. They differ in structural elements, as well as in the quality of filling. Someone prefers primitive models, while someone equips their car storage with more powerful systems.

Making a garage door with your own hands is a great option for those who want to equip such a structure with durable doors that are as suitable as possible in size and filling.

What are the types of garage doors and is it possible to design them yourself without the help of professionals and without experience in this matter?

There are several varieties of garage doors, most of which appeared not so long ago.

And before you figure out how to make a garage door with your own hands, consider the types of such products:

swing type gate

Swing garage doors.

The most ancient and at the same time reliable version of the gate. Such structures are installed everywhere: they can be used not only to equip garages, they have earned the trust of many years of trouble-free practice, even in harsh operating conditions.

The design of these samples consists of 2 wings fixed on hinges in the frame. The sashes, if everything is assembled correctly, close tightly without forming gaps between the frame. The mechanism of operation of swing gates is simple, but, as practice shows, it is very reliable.

Retractable type

Gates first began to be used at the beginning of the 20th century. By design, this is one sash that slides to the side parallel to the front wall. There are designs consisting of two wings. In this case, the sashes will move apart on different sides.

There may also be sliding gates that fold into several sections. A feature of the device of such models is the obligatory presence of free space for moving the valves. That's why similar designs most often used to equip hangars and industrial premises.

In the case of the use of sliding gates in private areas, they are not used to build the garage itself, but to equip the entrance to the site.

Lifting and turning mechanisms

Lift gate design.

Their development and production in our country began to be engaged not so long ago. By design, this is one canvas that rises up. The option is suitable for equipping a garage and arranging an entrance to a private plot.

Overhead sectional doors

Like the previous version, the models have recently appeared on our market. They are a panel assembled from sections that refract and move upwards along the guides when the command to open the gate is given with a remote control or a button.

The mechanism works due to the spring in it and guides with a chain drive. One of the biggest benefits is space savings.

Roller type gate

Garage rooms are extremely rarely equipped with such structures, due to their low reliability. Externally - aluminum plates, folding into a special box under the ceiling. Similar designs are most often equipped with objects with security and a pass system.

For reference! Regardless of the type of gate chosen, any of them can be equipped with automation and run from a key fob.

When choosing garage doors, it is important to take into account not only their appearance, functionality and reviews of advertisers, but also other, more important indicators: strength, durability and the ability to work in specific climatic conditions.

As mentioned earlier, swing gates will be the most reliable and durable option: they work even in any frost and are able to protect the room not only from freezing, but also from burglary, if equipped with a solid locking system.

Do-it-yourself gate: features of the work

Based on the fact that swing gates are most often used to equip garages, let's take an example of how to make a simple, but very reliable design with your own hands.

Features of welding garage doors.

Having purchased all the necessary consumables and prepared some tools, you can make swing garage doors on your own from start to finish.

For their device, the following materials will be required:

  • steel corners;
  • profiles;
  • metal sheets.

The dimensions of the gates and their features can be designed in advance, which makes it possible to make a design that is most suitable for the parameters of the building and the aesthetic preferences of its owner.

You can try to make a lift-and-turn type gate on their own, but the work requires considerable engineering experience and knowledge. In this case, it is important to understand how the counterweight system is organized and the mechanism itself is installed so that the system works flawlessly.

Most often, structures of this type are purchased ready-made, and their installation is carried out in accordance with the instructions attached to the product.

With overhead sectional doors it will be even more difficult, because they are almost impossible to assemble with your own hands. In this case, we are talking about unreasonably high costs, time costs and the complete absence of guarantees for the quality work of the assembled structure.

Therefore, if there is a desire to equip your garage with just such a system, then it is advisable to purchase a finished product.

And now let's take a closer look at the specifics of the manufacture of swing garage doors.

Garage door design

Garage door drawing.

As with the organization of any construction business that requires high precision, before proceeding with the manufacture of garage doors, it is necessary to make a project for the future design.

It is not difficult to make a drawing of a garage door on your own, it is enough to sketch a sketch on a regular sheet of paper, measure all the important elements and indicate the location of the hinge connections, the entrance, if it is assumed by the project, and the lock system.

First you need to choose the right height and width of the structure. The width of the wings is considered to be the minimum, at which the distance from the car body on both sides to the frame remained at least 30 cm. Of course, the larger this gap, the easier and more convenient it is to drive a car into the garage.

In practice, the maximum frame width is 5 meters. Most often, the gates are made 2.5-3 meters wide.

Advice! When choosing the width of the gate, it is very important to take into account that the distance from the frame of the structure to the wall perpendicular to it must be at least 0.8 m.

The height of the products is selected depending on the dimensions vehicle. Most often it is 2-2.2 meters. If a minibus is stored in the garage, then it is better to expand this parameter to 2.5 meters.

In our case, the structure will consist of a frame and a pair of wings fixed to it by means of hinges. Guided by the project and the dimensions indicated on it, we calculate and purchase the required number of consumables.

Gate frame manufacturing

It is best to start making a frame at the stage of erecting the walls of a garage structure. This will fix the gate in the body of the building, which will make the whole structure more reliable and durable.

During the laying of the front wall, when up to 0.5 m of masonry is ready, construction works suspended and retrained for the installation of the gate frame, after which you can continue to build walls.

To make a frame, you will need steel corners 65 mm, strips 2-3 cm wide, 3-4 mm thick and a reinforcing bar, with which the frame will be fixed in the opening of the structure. As for the tools, the work requires a grinder, a square, a building level, a tape measure and welding machine.

The garage frame in our case consists of an outer and an inner part.

Gate from a professional flooring.

The manufacturing algorithm for this structural element is as follows:

  1. We cut the corner with a grinder into 4 segments with a length equal to the width of the gate opening.
You will also need 4 more segments with a length equal to the height of the gate opening.
  2. We place the cut off parts of the corner on a flat surface, having previously checked it with a building level for skew, which is unacceptable on this stage building process.
We measure all the angles - they should be equal to 90 ° and use a welding machine to weld them together. As a result, you should get an even frame. Corners are welded either with an overlap, or by cutting off their edges and welding butt to butt. The first option, in comparison with the second, is more durable.
  3. On the outside of the frame, carefully remove all welding flaws using a grinder.
Otherwise, the protruding seams will prevent the sashes from fitting snugly to the frame.

Advice! If during welding the corners led, this situation can be corrected by welding a lever from the corner trimmings to them, placing it between the uneven sections of the frame.

Folding frame manufacturing

Next, we move on to the manufacture of the frame of the gate leaves. It should be slightly smaller in size than the garage door frame itself, which will ensure its easier entry into the opening. Compliance with this condition contributes to a tighter fit of the sashes to the outer side of the frame.

The frame for the leaves can be made from a steel corner identical in size to that in the case of the manufacture of the frame part of the gate, or a rectangular profile can also be used. There is no big difference here, except for the convenience in work and the moment of the load-carrying capacity of the structure.

The algorithm for manufacturing the frame part of the valves consists in performing the following steps:

  1. First of all, it is necessary to cut 4 pieces from the corner or profile along the length, less than the height of the frame by 1-1.5 cm.
Thanks to this gap, the sash will easily go into the opening. Since this design assumes the presence of two wings, 4 more horizontal segments will be required, with a length equal to the width of the main frame, divided in half and minus 3-3.5 cm.
  2. We place the cut off parts of the corner on a flat surface, check them for skew, measure the corners and weld.
It is better if this process is carried out together with an already welded frame - this way all the flaws and inaccuracies will be visible.
  3. In order to strengthen the structure, we weld a horizontal bar, which acts as a spacer and reduces the risk of withdrawal and distortion of the future structure.

Manufacturing of gates

Blades are usually made from sheet material. The most practical and reliable is a sheet with a thickness of at least 2 mm.

Ribs for garage doors.

Process of creation gate leaves as follows:

  1. First of all, you need to cut out sheet metal 2 canvases: one in height is 30-40 mm more than the height of the garage opening and in width less than 10-20 mm of the width of the frame, the other is the same in height, and 20 mm more in width than the frame.
  2. The next step is welding the sheets to the frame in such a way that the top and bottom panels protrude onto the frame by 10-20 mm.
One of the sashes, which will open in the second place, should not fit tightly in width to the edge of the frame, leaving a 10 mm edge free. This will ensure a tighter fit of the second alignment. The panel of the second sash, on the contrary, is welded in such a way that it protrudes beyond the frame part by 20-40 mm.
  3. Next, we proceed to welding reinforced loops.
The lower half is welded to the main frame, and the upper half to the wings. In order to strengthen the fastening of the hinge, it can be supplemented with a welded metal tab. We take a strip 5-7 mm thick, bend it and weld it to the upper half of the hinges and to the sash. The reinforcing tab is welded from the inside.

Advice! During welding of sheet material, it can lead. In order to avoid skewing of the valves, the corners and the middle of the canvases are first of all tacked by welding, after which the entire sheet is tacked with point movements in increments of 10-15 cm.

If all structural elements are on a flat surface, the sashes are located on top of the frame, it is possible to consider whether everything is welded correctly and where there are any flaws. This makes it possible to take corrective action in a timely manner.

If the design is of high quality, then after these works we proceed to install the gate in the garage opening.

Gate installation

First of all, you should install the gate frames: internal and external. Recall that the frame part is installed at the stage of erecting the front wall of the garage structure itself. Do not forget to check the evenness of the frame using a square and a building level.

Both frames are interconnected by metal plates 40 mm wide, which are welded in increments of 60 cm. We weld reinforcing bars, 15-20 cm long, to the upper part of the frame and along its sides. Due to these elements, the gate will be securely fixed in the opening.

After that, you can continue laying out the front wall of the structure, embedding the bars into the masonry.

Having reached the top of the structure, a floor beam should be installed on the frame. It can be metal or concrete - at the discretion of the developer. It remains only to hang the sashes on the hinges and check the performance of the entire gate mechanism: how the sashes open / close, whether anything interferes with their movement.

Insulation and installation of constipation, locks

Similar designs can be insulated different material, ranging from polystyrene and ending with mineral wool.

But recently, extruded polystyrene foam has been increasingly used for such purposes. It is fixed by laying a lining on it or another facing material: it is enough to spread the insulation inside the sashes and fill, for example, sheets of plywood from above.

It remains only to choose a locking system. Garage structures are most often equipped with a locking system: one sash is closed from the inside with a lock, the other - from the outside with a lock, padlock or internal. If it is a padlock, then it is necessary to equip the wings on the outside with rings.

Outcome

If you follow the tips above, carefully check the correct dimensions, then it is quite possible to get a strong, reliable garage door that will serve you faithfully for a long time. The design makes it possible to insulate the gate by laying the foam from the inside and making the sheathing.

Making a garage door with your own hands takes about 2 days. This product will have a unique size and design, if you want to make something special. Good luck!

Buying a solid garage design in our time is not a cheap pleasure. Do-it-yourself garage doors are cheaper to make, but certain knowledge and skills are required. It is also desirable to have welding skills. Therefore, how to make a garage door with your own hands is a question that needs to be thoroughly understood. And then it will be possible to start the task at hand.

Advantages: resistance to corrosion and burglary, do not require additional space.

Feature Comparison

Guided by the indicators in the table, we can say that the choice is only for the buyer. It all comes down to cost and reliability. For example, swing and sectional models are good to install in a home garage, but they are not suitable for garage cooperatives, as they have a low degree of reliability.

Up-and-over garage doors are suitable for any building, but their main drawback is their high cost. Due to the low price, swing gates are suitable for a private garage. If necessary, they can be insulated, automated and reinforced with an additional sheet of metal. In addition, it is not difficult to weld garage doors at home.

Frame device diagram

The frame is made of a metal corner, which is welded around the entire perimeter of the doorway. Thus trim the slope inside and out. Between themselves, the inner and outer corners are welded with metal strips in several places. You should get a frame frame.

After the frame is ready, collapsible hinges are welded on the sides. The lower part must be connected with an outer corner, and the upper part with a frame frame. This design is also suitable for a garage from

To date, a wide variety of garage door designs have been developed and successfully implemented in practice. We offer you a description of the most popular types of gate systems, as well as a guide to self assembly and installation of swing gates - the easiest design to manufacture, with the arrangement of which almost every novice master can handle. As you gain experience, you will be able to assemble more complex systems.

In such gates, the sash moves to the side using a system of guides and rollers. Gates can be installed outside and inside the garage.

Advantages and disadvantages

Among the main advantages of sliding gates, it is necessary to note such points as:

The main disadvantage is the fact that such gates can only be installed on a garage with a wide facade. Its width must be at least such that the sliding sash can completely fit on it.

Such gates can be made and mounted independently. The sashes themselves are made in almost the same way as the sashes of ordinary swing gates. Differences are present only at the installation stage - instead of loops, guides and rollers are used.

A very convenient option. Most often there are systems in which the sash rises and is fixed above the opening. Gates are usually made of galvanized steel. Aluminum structures are also often found - such sashes weigh much less than their steel counterparts.

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantages are the following:

However, such gates can only be used to equip a private garage located on a protected individual site. Lifting structures, especially those made of aluminum, have a relatively low rigidity, which does not allow them to provide the required protection of the garage.

Such gates have a rather complex structure. For their self-manufacturing you need to have good engineering experience and possess the special knowledge necessary to select a suitable counterweight and install related mechanisms.

A novice master can only try to install ready-made lifting gate factory assembly. This is done quite simply in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

The structure is assembled from several horizontal sections interconnected by means of hinged loops. The end sections are equipped with rollers moving along the guide rails. The guides themselves are bent so that when the gate is opened, it can easily fit under the garage ceiling.

The structure is sufficiently high rates reliability and rigidity. Inside each section, as a rule, there is already a heater, which additionally increases the heat and noise insulation properties of the gate.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages:

The disadvantages are relatively low burglary resistance and high price.

To make such a gate on your own will not work. Of course, you can try, but it’s not a fact that a home-made design will work correctly. In addition, the production of sections will take an unreasonable amount of money and time.

Most often they consist of two wings. At the heart of the gate is metal carcass. Sandwich panels, steel sheets and other suitable materials can be used for cladding.

For greater convenience, a gate can be cut out in the sash.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages:

The main disadvantage is the need for sufficient free space in front of the garage to open the gate. This is especially inconvenient in winter - in order to open the gate, you will first have to clear the path in front of them from snow.

Swing gates are the easiest to manufacture. It is in their favor that it is recommended to give preference to novice masters.

Swing Gate Manufacturing Guide

Pre-plan the dimensions of the future gate in accordance with the dimensions of the opening for entering the garage and buy the required amount of materials. For greater convenience, draw up a drawing, or at least an elementary sketch.

The first stage - the mounting frame

Start by making the base frame. The starting material is a metal corner. The frame will consist of an external and internal support frame.

First step. Measure the opening.

Second step. Cut the corner into blanks of the required dimensions for the manufacture of the outer frame. Lay out the resulting elements on a plane, align them horizontally and align the corners.

To adjust the horizontal, use linings, check the corners with a square. In its absence, you can simply measure the diagonals. Correct any deviations immediately.

Thus, you need to lay out the blanks in the form of a future outer frame.

Third step. Weld the carrier frame. Its outer side should be as smooth and absolutely even as possible, otherwise the gate will not fit tightly enough to it. To ensure the required smoothness, grind the welding seams with an ordinary grinder.

Fourth step. Weld vertical trimmings of the corner into the corners of the structure. They will provide the necessary rigidity of the frame, i.e., allow it to remain geometrically unchanged.

The second stage - the frame

Start building the frame. In the future, you will attach a finishing metal sheet to this frame. The frame itself can be made from a metal profile with a section of 6x2 cm.

First step. Put the frame on a suitable flat surface face up.

Second step. Insert the rails into the base frame. Align each side of the structure carefully.

Third step. Provide a gap of 15-20 mm between the carrier frame and the inner door frame. To do this, use inserts. Thanks to this gap in the future, the sash will be able to move without difficulty.

Fourth step. Make sure the corners of the frame are straight and finally weld the profiles.

The third stage - sheathing

Be as careful and accurate as possible at this stage. The aesthetic qualities and a number of the most important functional properties of the finished structure fully depend on the correct execution of the skin.

First step. Cut the steel sheet to fit the garage doors. At the same time, the left gate leaf should overlap the right one with a 1-2 cm overlap - take this into account.

Second step. Temporarily fasten the sheets to the frame. To do this, grab them at several points below.

Third step. Trim the lining of the right gate leaf by 10-20 mm (needed for overlap, mentioned earlier).

Fourth stage. Finally weld the sheets to the frame. Weld the material first at the corners and in the center of each box, and then fix it around the perimeter. Thanks to this, the sheets will not move during operation. After welding is completed, the corner and center fixing points must be cut off.

Fourth stage - loops

Hanging hinges are best to buy.

Weld the lower hinge element to the carrier frame. Weld the top element to the outer sash. You can use a curved metal strip to strengthen the connection. It must be attached to the top of the hinged hinge and to the gate leaf.

Additionally, the rigidity of the fixation of the loops can be increased by welding to inside reinforcing insert products.

Fifth stage - locks and constipation

The gates in question are most often equipped with padlocks or mortise locks. Additionally, it is recommended to install stoppers and a high-quality deadbolt. These products will allow you to close the garage door from the inside.

Pin stoppers without problems are made on their own. To make such a design, drive a piece of pipe into the ground or the floor of the garage, and immerse a metal rod inside it - the movable element of the stopper. The rod must be passed through a loop previously made in the sash. Make sure that the pipe is not clogged with snow and various dirt.

Locks also require timely and competent care. Protect your gate locks from moisture, especially in winter. Periodically lubricate the locks with oil.

Stage six - painting

The paint layer will provide additional protection of the metal sheet from corrosion and other damage.

Coat the metal with a primer, let it dry, and then apply a double coat of your chosen metal finish paint.

Carry out any painting work either outdoors or in a well-ventilated room!

The seventh stage - installation

First step. Install the outer and inner element of the door frame. Fix to the slopes of the gate opening with metal pins about 18 cm long.

Second step. Cut off the protruding edges of the metal pins, scald them and carefully grind them with a grinder so that in the future they do not interfere with the gate closing. You can paint the pins if you like.

Third step. Fasten the inner and outer parts of the frame with jumpers (metal plates) of 40 mm. Weld jumpers in increments of about 50-60 cm.

Fourth stage. Hang the sashes. If you wish, you can equip the gate of your garage with automation. This is very convenient - you do not have to constantly open and close the doors yourself.

The eighth stage - warming

In the absence of high-quality thermal insulation, up to 50-60% of heat will go through the gate. If you plan to use the garage in the cold season and are going to equip it with some type of heating, be sure to resolve the issue with the arrangement of insulation.

To do this, mount a crate of wooden bars on the inner surface of the gate leaves. Select the fastening step of the elements individually according to the width of the insulation boards. For thermal insulation, it is recommended to use mineral wool and other materials based on it.

Before laying the insulation, fix a plastic film over the crate. Lay the insulation in the cells of the crate. Lay the insulation as tightly as possible, without cracks and gaps. For most regions, a 5-centimeter thick insulation layer is more than enough. Cover the thermal insulation vapor barrier film. On top of the crate with insulation, fill the clapboard or other facing material.

There is nothing super complicated in the independent design and installation of garage doors. You only need to follow the instructions and be careful at every stage of work. Having understood the procedure for arranging simple swing gates, you can independently build more complex structures.

Successful work!
