Updated: 2019-01-19 Reading time: 12 minutes

Malia or Malia is a very famous coastal resort in the central part of Crete. A wide variety of hotels, villas and apartments. Restaurants, taverns and bars for every taste. Initially, the resort was popular with English tourists, but in recent years it has been increasingly visited by tourists from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, who now make up almost a third of the total number of tourists in the area.

The resort offers a wide variety of hotels: both lovers of hotel and beach holidays and travelers will find suitable options here. In Malia, there are the simplest and most economical accommodation options, for example, Artemis Bay Hotel (Artemis Bay 2 *), Philoxenia (Malia Philoxenia Hotel 3 *) or Galini Apartments (3 * Galini Apartments). The Hermes Hotel 3 * can also be attributed to the same category - the price will not be high at all. It's quite good options so as not to spend extra money on a hotel, especially if you plan to spend more time on the beaches or on trips to the sights of Crete.

Lovers of comfort and those who want to spend more time at the resort should pay attention to the Malia Bay Beach Hotel & Bungalows 4 *, Dessole Malia Beach Hotel 4 * and the more expensive five-star Ammos Beach Hotel (Hotel Ammos Beach Resort 5 *), which is located right on the beach next to an excellent beach. We work with all hotels, villas and apartments in this resort.

The popularity of the town and proximity to the main roads will allow all its guests to easily go on almost any excursion - from here there are many bus routes almost all over the island. It is better to start making a list of places to visit in advance!

Where to buy excursions in Malia: less time for searching - more for relaxation!

For our clients, we at Heraklion.ru simplify the task when choosing a place to buy excursions from Malia. In our tour agency, you can choose and pay for the trip you need both in advance online and by making a free reservation on the website. By the way, for this reason, our prices for excursions in Russian, in comparison with the offers of the host tour operators, are noticeably lower, and payment for the booked trip can be made later on the site or at a meeting with the manager.

Online registration is also a good opportunity to save precious vacation time, because long walking “walks” along noisy city streets from one street office to another and back will hardly bring much pleasure. It is much better to prepare and resolve all issues in advance, and spend your vacation on vacation - in the full sense of the word, when the travel plan has been drawn up and all the tickets for them are already in your hands.

An order can be placed even at the time of planning your future vacation or already on the island, if the options offered by your guides did not suit you. Our customer care staff will be happy to advise you on all possible questions regarding travel by phone, email, Viber, WhatsApp, Telegram and, of course, will give you all the necessary information in person.

Malia: what to see in Crete if you decide to diversify your vacation on the sandy beaches of the resort

it a good place for those who love beach holiday and do not mind dropping into a bar or a disco in the evening. By the way, the beaches here are really excellent - large sandy and with a very good entry into the sea, so they are suitable even for vacationers with small children.

Fans of antiquities and archeology will be happy to know that one of the most famous Minoan palaces is located near the resort. Those who wish to diversify their vacation in the hotel and on the coast will find it quite easy: from Malia you can quickly get to the sights of the eastern regions or go to the central part of the island. In addition, although the resort is located on an excellent sandy coast, there are also trips from this area to the most famous beaches of the island - to Balos Bay and Elafonisi Beach!

Whether you are relaxing alone, with friends or a family with children - holidays in Malia can be organized for every taste! Below we list the main trips and excursion schedules from this beach resort.

The cost of excursions from Malia: current prices for 2019

The total cost of any excursion is determined from the cost of transfers (buses, ferries ...), the work of guides, the cost of tickets to archaeological areas and some other components. Basically, it is the remoteness of the districts and the transfer that are of decisive importance. Therefore, ceteris paribus, the closer the resort is to the place of interest, the cheaper the tour will be. The reverse is also true.

If you are traveling with children, then for them we have discounts from 50% to 100%!

The big island is ready to offer a very diverse program of trips to attractions: interesting places there are in the east and in the central part of the island, and, of course, on the west coast. Let's start with the main thing - the most famous beaches.

Excursion from Malia to Balos: a trip to the three seas in the most beautiful bay of the island

One of the most famous beaches of Crete and all of Greece is located in the Balos lagoon. This place is also known as the "Confluence of the Three Seas", because it is here that you can watch how the waters of the Cretan, Libyan and Ionian seas join. A half dozen shades of blue and turquoise, minimalistic landscapes, beach holidays and a little history about the fortress on the island of Gramvousa are waiting for you. Let's go, swim, go to Balos with an organized tour!

Long distance does not scare: we go to Elafonisi beach from Malia on an organized transfer

Full day beach trip: we will drive along the entire northern coast of the island to the pink sand beaches of Elafonisi! The places are very beautiful, but they are far away: the departure will be early in the morning, and the return to the hotels will take place after sunset.

Exploring western Crete: Venetian cities and the greenest part of the island

Rethymnon, Chania and Kournas turtle lake

Western Crete is famous for its Venetian cities and rich nature. On this trip, you will go from Malia to Rethymno and Chania, and after walking you will stop at Lake Kournas, which is known for its sweetish fresh water and ... turtles!

Samaria Gorge - White Mountains National Park

Do you like outdoor activities? Go for a walk in the largest gorge in Europe! You will be transferred by bus to western Crete and more than 16 kilometers through coniferous forests to the coast of the Libyan Sea. The journey will start early in the morning, and you will return to the hotel only in the evening.

East Crete: from Malia to Agios Nikolaos and Spinalongou Island

A beautiful island with a rather sad but very interesting history. We leave early in the morning by bus, a little later we transfer to the ship, plus walks, swimming and a delicious barbecue. It will be a very busy and interesting day! We go to Spinalonga and spend the whole day interestingly on excursions!

Excursion from Malia to Santorini: all possible trips to the exceptional beauty of the island!

There are so many options to visit the island of Santorini that there is definitely a suitable one! The main thing is not to get confused. The main differences are in ferries and schedules.

The most famous fast ferry

White houses and squares of Fira, bright and colorful Oia, churches with blue domes, a black volcanic beach - during this trip from Malia to Santorini you will see all the key attractions of this amazing island. The comfort of the sea voyage will be provided by the fastest Santorini Palace ferry. Learn the details of the trip and prepare your camera!

The route of this trip is completely similar to the more expensive excursion, which is carried out on the largest SeaJets ferry. Why is the price of this cruise lower by a quarter? The informational part will be less rich - the guide gives fewer historical facts, but the key differences lie precisely in the ship: the flights are still carried out by the same company, but one of its small catamarans is put on the route. The trip is organized from 5:30 to 6:45, and the ferry departs at half past seven. Details are on the tour page.

The slowest ferry - for lovers of cruises

The main difference of this Santorini cruise is the slow ferry that spends more than three hours at sea each way. The excursion on the island starts after 13:00 and ends at the beginning of the eighth. Thus, the return to the hotels in Crete will be around midnight. However, it's a great way to travel cheaper plus watch the sunset at sea! Details on the cruise page.

The most punctual - to return on time

The route of the sightseeing tour of the island is completely the same, however, this tour is carried out on a fast and very point ferry. This allows (if desired) to slightly change the program on the island and visit the volcano instead of the black beach. Also, if you would not like to be late to Crete in the evening, then pay attention to this tour. Departure early in the morning, return to hotels around 9 pm. The ferry follows the schedule very clearly.

2 day tour from Malia to Santorini: a cruise for those who want to see the island and its legendary sunsets

The most famous fast ferry

The two-day excursion, in addition to repeating the itinerary of the one-day trip, includes an overnight stay at the hotel plus breakfast (price includes everything). What does this mean specifically for you? More free time, more opportunities, and most importantly, the opportunity to watch the truly legendary and most beautiful sunsets while walking along the most beautiful streets or being in one of the many cozy cafes on the island! All reviews and impressions of sunsets are amazing! We are going to Santorini on the fast ship Santorini Palace. By the way, we can increase the number of days to three, four or more. Contact us!

Small but quite fast catamaran

A sightseeing tour of Fira and Oia, the lack of a beach component on the first day, one and only hotel in advance, and a slightly slower smaller ferry - that's a brief description of this trip to Santorini. Otherwise, this is a great way to spend two days on the island, while spending noticeably less. Details on the tour page.

If you like to organize trips on your own or you already have big plans and its own program to this island, then pay attention to the possibility of online.

The city is located just 35 km from Heraklion, on the way to Agios Nikolaos. The city is divided into two parts: the old city, which is located in the foothills away from the beach and bustle. Here you can find old cozy streets with traditional houses, family taverns, colorful flowers entwined around old buildings.

The new part, which is closer to the beach, is full of movement. Bars, restaurants, nightclubs, hotels for every taste - life is in full swing here. When choosing hotels, it is worth considering the location of the hotel in order to know what to expect from the area: the noise of fun or a calm environment.

How to get there

You can get to Malia from Heraklion by taxi, bus or rented car. The bus service is very developed, so the most budgetary and convenient way is to travel by regular bus. But if you arrive late in the evening or with a large company, you can consider the option of a taxi.

Beaches

Malia has the best sandy beaches Crete. The beaches are fully equipped for recreation, there is a large selection of water attractions, games on fresh air. Families with children, before deciding to spend their holidays in Malia, should keep in mind that the atmosphere reigns here eternal holiday and permissiveness.

Young people mainly go to the city for three Cs (from the English sea, sand, sex), so it would hardly be appropriate for children to watch love scenes, which are not rare, right on the beach.

Cafes and restaurants

The city of Malia, as mentioned, is famous for its restaurants, bars and clubs. Many restaurants are popular thanks to the grateful reviews of tourists on the Internet, but there are many small, unknown, cafes and taverns that are also worth trying. Steakhouses with Mexican, English grilled food, traditional taverns with authentic food, family taverns with Greek cuisine, pizza and pasta, pubs with drinks and snacks, an American restaurant with barbecue and steaks... The choice of establishments is amazing!

shopping

Shopping is also possible. There are 2 large supermarkets, many small shops and souvenir shops. It is better to buy all the necessary things in a supermarket near the central beach, and souvenirs in a huge store on a parallel street. Prices are not exactly ideal, but affordable. The ruins of the Mali palace of the Minoan era were found here. Fragments of buildings, utensils, workshops have been preserved in the palace. Fragments of some found vessels confirm that there was a settlement on the site of Malia back in the Neolithic era.

The multifaceted city will be of interest to everyone who wants to spend a beach holiday with a visit to both entertainment and cultural events, but not really suitable option for holidays with young children.

Two kilometers from Malia, the ruins of a palace built at the same time as the famous Palace of Knossos and owned by Sarpedon, brother of King Minos, have been preserved. Archaeological excavations began here in 1915 and continue to this day. The most famous find is a gold pendant in the form of two bees with a drop of honey in their paws. You can relax and dine in the Lithos tavern with the hospitable owner Nikos: homemade olive oil, lamb stewed over low heat, steamed fish, Greek yogurt with honey, all traditional Greek cuisine on your table. The approximate cost of a dinner for two with homemade wine will be 20 euros.

Monastery of St. George

Five kilometers from the city is the monastery of St. George. It can be seen on the mountainside right at the entrance to the Selinari Gorge. The modern monastery complex, impressive with its architectural decoration, was built on the site of the old one, which was founded during the period of Byzantine rule and destroyed by the Turks in the 16th century.
According to legend, three brothers lived in these places, originally from the island of Rhodes, and one of them, Nikolaos, was enlightened, he found the icon of St. George in the mountains. The old monastery church was erected on this site. After this event, Nikolaos became a hermit and settled in a cave near the place where he found the icon. When the saint died, his relics were transported by sailors to Rhodes, and the very place of his death, the rock opposite the monastery, was marked with a large cross.

Currently, the miraculous icon can only be seen on the feast of St. George in May. A copy of it is exhibited in the monastery church. From the platform in front of the monastery opens great view in the vicinity, up to the coast.

You can come here by rented car on the road leading to Agios Nikolaos or by taxi for about 15 euros, admission is free.
Before visiting the monastery, you should take care of the appropriate clothing.

Some excursions

From Malia, it is convenient to make a trip to Agios Nikolaos, a charming city, inside which the large freshwater lake Voulismeni is hidden. There are numerous cafes around the lake.

It is nice to sit here, drink a cup or a glass of cold juice. You can dine in one of the many taverns on the waterfront or in the depths of the narrow streets of the old city.

You can get here for 3.30 euros by bus from Malia, departing every hour. The last bus from Agios Nikolaos leaves at 22.15.

Already from Agios Nikolaos you can take a bus for 1.70 euros or a taxi for 10 euros to get to Elounda, admire Mirabello Bay and swim on the excellent municipal beach of this popular resort village.

From the port of Elounda every 30 minutes from 9.00 to 16.30 a sightseeing boat leaves for the legendary. The ticket costs 10 euros, the entrance to the territory of the abandoned city is 2 euros.

Night life

From 22.00 hours in Malia, a vibrant nightlife begins, which continues until 5 am. Hundreds of young people, mostly from England and Germany, come here to spend their fun holidays.

Most popular clubs: Malibu Club, Camelot Castle and Banana Club. In general, there are a lot of clubs, admission to them is free, only drinks are paid. Therefore, you can move from one to another all night long, in search of the one that you like the most. Dance clubs are candy club and Appolo Club.

Most taverns and cafes, as well as souvenir shops in the city center, are open until late in the evening.

At the same time, in Malia one of the most gentle entrance to the crystal clear sea, developed infrastructure.

Families with children and those who do not want to take part in the bustling fun until 5 in the morning should choose hotels on the outskirts of the city, where the noise from numerous discos is not heard. In this case, your vacation will not be overshadowed, and you will be able to fully enjoy the magnificent nature and hospitality of this region.

Crete is quite attractive and interesting island, so tourists from all over the world are happy to visit it at any time of the year, and given that even in winter the average air temperature is at around plus fifteen degrees, then practically in winter, in the full sense of the word, it cannot be called. Therefore, many hotels are equipped with heating, heated indoor pools and work here all year round. But, of course, it cannot be called a year-round season, since swimming in sea water with a temperature of seventeen or eighteen degrees Celsius, not everyone dares, and therefore, the beach season, which we will talk about, cannot be called such a time.

Some say that they had a good rest in Malia or Crete in general, at the end of April. I agree that in April you can have a good rest and sunbathe, but this is if you are so hardened that you can afford to swim in eighteen-degree water. Or you can refuse the sea and compensate for this lack by swimming in the hotel pool, especially since many hotels, as I said, have not only outdoor pools. As for my personal opinion, I consider the earliest time for coming to rest in Malia to be mid-May, when the sea will be at least twenty degrees. However, a lot of our compatriots prefer to come during the long May holidays, and this makes some sense, since prices this month, more precisely ... read more

Irina

May holidays experience

It's been a wonderful vacation. The weather in Crete by the end of May is already fully consistent with summer, so you can use the beach with might and main. At the same time, there is no such hellish heat as August, so it is quite comfortable to spend your free time outside the beach. good time for sightseeing. Family holiday

In Malia, there are opportunities for recreation for people of all ages. It will be comfortable here for children, and the elderly, and young people. The main thing is that there is entertainment for everyone. But we can say that this resort is ideal for an active family who does not want to sit still.

What to take with you on vacation?

It is worth taking with you only what you personally need from things and clothes. Don't forget sunscreen and medicines you may need. From clothes, along with summer things, take also warm clothes, as it can get a little colder. Do not forget about running shoes or comfortable shoes, which will be very useful during excursions. On the same excursions, a capacious backpack will not hurt to put water and purchased souvenirs there. If you are traveling with small children, then take a swim ring. In general, try not to take too much, so as not to overload the suitcase. You will bring back a lot of souvenirs, so you need to leave a place for them. If you forget something, don't worry. There are many shops in Malia where you can buy everything. Prices are quite affordable.

There are plenty of all kinds of hotels and apartments in Malia. It is best to choose something away from the noisy center. Then you will definitely be provided with a quiet rest at night. Remote hotels can be so comfortable that you may not want to leave the area often. But even if you want to go to the beach, then find out in advance if the hotel has a bus that constantly delivers vacationers to the coast. Most of the time this service is available.

What to do at the resort?

What tourists go for seaside resort, it's the beach, the sea and the sun. This is the main pastime. If you are not a supporter of a monotonous holiday, then you should at least take a walk around the city. During the day, you can go shopping or walk the streets. Malia is conditionally divided into old and new parts. Just in the old part it will be relatively calm and interesting. You can walk along the narrow streets, see the houses and small flowery courtyards, as well as visit the Byzantine churches. Among them are the church of St. Nektarios with frescoes by a Greek artist, the Venetian church of St. John, the church of St. Dimitrios. It will also be interesting to explore the surroundings of Malia on your own. At 3 km from the city are the ruins of the Malian palace, which are in no way inferior to the Palace of Knossos and have been preserved in their original form. It is also worth a trip to the small town of Mohos to see the traditional way of life of the locals. For those who adhere to the faith, a trip to the monastery of St. George in the mountains will be interesting.

And of course, we must not forget about the noisy nightlife in Malia. There are a lot of clubs and night discos, for which crowds of young people come here. These establishments are open until 5 am, so the music does not stop and it is always fun here. Access to all clubs is free. Only drinks are paid.

It is now easier to choose excursions via the Internet, so you should take care of this in advance, especially since the choice is very large. If this is your first time in Greece, then it is worth visiting the island of Santorini and it is better to take a 2-day excursion with an overnight stay. Then you can see the main sights and meet the famous sunset. Among other excursions worthy of attention are the Palace of Knossos and the labyrinth of the Minotaur, the Lassithi plateau and the cave of Zeus. These attractions are located near Malia, so excursions here are carried out either for the whole day or on a reduced program for half a day. If you wish, you can make beach trips either to Balos Bay or to the pink sands of Elafonisi. There is still the opportunity to visit the deserted beaches on the Libyan coast. These are the golden beaches of Chrissi and the wild beaches of Koufonisi. But these trips are long and designed for the whole day with an early departure and a late return. Inexpensive and interesting excursions in Western Crete. It is worth visiting the cities of Rethymno and Chania with a stop at the freshwater turtle lake in Kournas, and for those who are not afraid of long walks, it will be interesting to visit the Samaria Gorge. You should also pay attention to the excursion to the island of Spinalonga and the city of Agios Nikolaos. Also from Malia you can make a trip to Athens or Heraklion. For those who want more relaxation and entertainment, you can choose a boat trip on a boat with fishing. If you are relaxing with children, then you can go to one of the island's water parks, especially since the transfer is already included in the price. An evening excursion is also provided, which includes a visit to the olive factory, followed by an entertainment program where you can enjoy music, dance and traditional cuisine.

The beaches of Malia are sandy with a gentle entry into the sea. All beaches have the appropriate infrastructure, which includes sun loungers and umbrellas (for an additional fee), toilets and showers, sports and playgrounds. On the beaches you can use the services of a bar or cafe. Also, not far from Malia, you can visit the beaches of the village of Stalida. You can get there by regular bus, which runs every 15 minutes. Stalis has the same equipped beaches as in Malia. It is also worth visiting the beach near the ruins of the Malian palace. This beach is called Potamos. It also has everything you need to relax, and there are much fewer people.

It is also worth adding that all the beaches of Malia have been awarded the Blue Flag for cleanliness and environmental safety.

Souvenirs can be purchased on Dimokratias street in a large 3-storey shop. There is a very large selection of such products. Also, for souvenirs at a lower price, you should stop by a small shop at the entrance to Malia from Heraklion. For groceries, you can go to two SPAR Supermarkets. The same feta cheese and olive oil can be purchased here at a lower price. Be sure to buy a bunch of small bananas from street vendors. It's inexpensive, but delicious.

As for more serious purchases such as, for example, a fur coat, clothes, jewelry, then for this it is worth going to Heraklion or other large cities.

Where can you eat?

There are many food establishments in Malia, including cafes, restaurants, chain cafes and street food. First of all, you should pay attention to small establishments with traditional Greek cuisine. Here, all dishes are prepared with high quality and home-style, since such cafes usually belong to one family, which takes care of the reputation of the institution. You can also have a delicious dinner in fish restaurants or taverns. Seafood and fish are always fresh from the morning catch.

How much does it cost to eat? About food prices.

Approximately the cost of one dinner for two, consisting of a main course, salad and beer or local wine, will cost 45-50 Euros.

Entertainment

Malia is primarily a resort with an active nightlife, so many young people come here and go for parties and parties. For most vacationers, there are beaches and pools at hotels. It is worth noting that on the beaches of Malia there are recreation and sports centers where you can rent a catamaran or ride a banana. You can also go parasailing. For walks, you can choose the narrow streets of the old city, where it will always be interesting. There is also something to see in the vicinity of Malia. Each travel agency will be happy to offer you an excursion to anywhere in Crete. But you can go to some places near the resort yourself. For example, you can take a bus to Agios Nikolaos and see the wonderful freshwater lake Voulismeni. From the same city, you can also get to Elounda by bus, admire the Mirabello Bay and swim on the local beach. From Elounda you can go by boat to the island of Spinalonga. The main thing is to calculate all your movements in time in order to return to Malia by evening. It makes sense to go to Heraklion yourself, especially if you want to buy something serious and expensive. But in this city there are also interesting sights, including the archaeological museum. You can also go to the Palace of Knossos yourself, and if you wish, you can also go to Santorini without an excursion group.

Pros of living in Malia

I liked the sandy beaches, where there is enough space for everyone, and there is everything you need to spend the whole day there. Also, the atmosphere of the resort itself is conducive not only to active recreation, but also to complete relaxation. It is also interesting that here you can touch the antiquity on the streets of the old city, and it is quite possible to get to some of the surrounding sights on your own without resorting to the help of travel agencies.

Cons of staying in Malia

Too noisy nightlife could be called a disadvantage, but this should be taken into account immediately and look for a hotel away from the center. If the hotel is selected by a travel agency, then you should pay their attention to this moment. It is also worth considering that this is a small resort, where there is not much space for walking. If not for the old city, it would not be so interesting. Another disadvantage is the lack of stores for clothing shopping. I don’t really want to spend the whole day for these purposes and go to a larger city.

Should you visit Malia?

Definitely worth going here. Still, the summer in this resort lasts a long time, the beaches here are sandy and equipped with everything you need. The hotels are quite worthy to stay. From Malia there is an opportunity to visit many cities of Crete and not only Crete.
