Mounting the door handle on the interior door. Installing a handle on an interior door

Sold without accessories. You will have to purchase and install the door handle separately. The work is simple. Installation can be done independently, you only need a certain tool.

Products differ in the material of manufacture, design, working mechanism. Accessories are selected according to the style of the room, taking into account ease of use. By type of attachment are:

  • Overhead. The fittings are simply screwed with self-tapping screws to the surface of the canvas.
  • Mortise. Often come with a lock or latch. Mounting of accessories involves cutting a groove and drilling a through hole in the body.

All mortise models are divided into two types:

  • Knobs. The fittings are equipped with a swivel mechanism that moves the latch. Usually the handle itself is made of a spherical or disc shape.

  • Push models. The mechanism functions according to a similar principle, only to activate it, the handle must be pressed. Fittings complete with a lock are in demand for interior and exterior doors.

pressure Models are further divided into two types:

  • Mechanism with handle and latch complete. Such models are inexpensive, but not durable. They quickly loosen and fail.

  • The handle, latch, wrap and the mechanism itself (with a tongue or magnetic) are selected separately depending on preference. Such products are better and more reliable than the first option.

Common material metal alloys or aluminum are used for the production of fittings. Overhead models can be made of wood. For expensive canvases, stone and glass handles are produced. The cheapest option is plastic. Metal elements are chrome plated or nickel plated.

Products differ by type of castle. The simplest locking element is a latch. The lock can be locked with a key on one or both sides. In the first version with inside room key replaces the latch.

Required Tools

To install the handle on the interior door with your own hands, you will need the simplest carpentry tool:

  • electric drill;
  • nozzle crown with a diameter of 50 mm;
  • pen drill with a diameter of 20–25 mm;
  • pencil;
  • screwdriver;
  • a hammer;
  • chisel.

Installation template will help facilitate installation door handles sold with the product. If one was not in the package, it can be printed from the Internet. The template is a 1:1 scale diagram of the movement case. It is applied to the canvas to mark the groove and hole. If it is planned to install a large number of handles, a jig is cut out of wood for drilling.

How to install a door handle?

Determine the height of the handles interior doors according to their preference, but usually they keep a distance from the floor of 0.9–1 m. The indicator may depend on the height of the people living in the house. To maintain the aesthetics, the handles of all canvases are placed at the same height.

They begin the installation of door handles on interior doors with markings, but first the canvas is lightly tapped. The sound determines the density. Modern doors often go empty inside. wooden frame made only around the perimeter and jumpers installed. If the fittings fall into the void, then it is impossible to fix it.

The handle is being installed on the door removed from the hinges. If the canvas cannot be painlessly dismantled, then it is wedged in the open state. Each model has its own design features. Therefore, before inserting, it is important to read the attached instructions and take measurements. They will help you accurately select the drill nozzles according to the diameter.

Mounting the latch handle

They begin installing the latch handle on interior doors by choosing a full-bodied place and marking. Usually the manufacturer attaches the scheme. In its absence, manual marking is done simultaneously with the sidebar:

  • First, a mark is placed from the edge of the canvas at a distance of 60 mm. At the end, a center line is drawn, the center is marked for the future hole.
  • To make the front plate of the latch body flush with the wood, at the end door leaf chisel choose a nest 3 mm deep.
  • For further installation of the knob handle, they take an electric drill with a crown and drill a through hole in the canvas. Care must be taken to avoid damage decorative coating canvases.
  • A hole is drilled from the end of the sash at the marked center with a pen drill. Its depth and diameter is equal to the size of the latch body. It is impossible to drill deeper, as there is a risk of damage to the panel. The latch is inserted inside, fixed with two self-tapping screws.

  • To install the knob, it is first disassembled. There is a technological hole on the side, inside of which there is a latch - a tongue. When pressed with a key, the handle can be easily removed.
  • The next element is to remove the decorative trim. The outer half of the handle is inserted into the hole in the door, and on the other hand they put the inner half and both elements are bolted together. Now it remains to put in place the decorative trim and the handle itself.

  • Continuation of the installation of the door handle with a latch provides for the fastening of the striker. The sash is completely closed and they try to mark on the boat the place where the tongue fits locking mechanism. According to the marking with a chisel, a recess is selected, a decorative pocket is inserted, a steel patch plate is fixed on top with self-tapping screws.

At the end of the work, the operability of the mechanism is checked.

Installing a handle with a lock

Installation of a door handle with a lock is complicated by gouging a large groove in the end of the leaf for the body of the locking mechanism. The work consists of the following:

  • The lock is applied to the end surface of the canvas. Draw a pencil around the back of the body. According to the markings, holes are drilled with an electric drill, placing them as tightly as possible. The remaining jumpers are selected with a chisel. It is better to make a hole with a pen drill, and its diameter should be a couple of millimeters larger than the thickness of the body of the locking mechanism.
  • A lock is inserted inside the groove. At the end of the sash, a contour of the front plate is drawn with a pencil, a recess is chosen with a chisel under it.
  • Having attached a lock to the side surface of the canvas, mark the hole for the handles. Below, they designate and make a hole for the keyhole.
  • The lock is installed inside the groove, fixed with screws. A metal square is inserted, decorative overlays are put on. Handles are put on the square. Each lining is fixed to the sash with self-tapping screws or through bolts, which depends on the model.
  • With the door leaf closed, the boat is marked for the striker. After sampling the recess with a chisel, the plate is fixed with self-tapping screws.

After installing the lock, check its performance.

Installation of handles for sliding doors

To insert a handle into a sliding-type interior door, you only need a drill, a chisel and a screwdriver. You can simplify the task with a milling cutter. Typically, sliding door handles are oblong in shape. They consist of a plastic insert, on which a decorative overlay snaps into place.

The handle is installed on the compartment door as follows:

  • The plastic insert is applied to the side surface of the sash. Outline with a pencil.
  • Using a drill and a chisel or a milling cutter, a groove is selected. Its depth corresponds to the thickness of the liner. Usually 12-15 mm is sufficient.

  • An insert is inserted inside the groove, fixed with self-tapping screws. The decorative overlay, which acts as a handle, is simply snapped on from above.
  • A similar action is performed on the reverse side of the canvas. If the shape of the handle is round, the recess is selected with a pen drill. Hardware may come with a lock. For its tie-in, a groove is selected at the end of the sliding door, and a reciprocal bar is attached to the boat.

Mounting the handle with magnetic lock

To insert a handle into an interior door with a magnetic latch, perform the same steps as when inserting a conventional lock. For smooth snapping, you need to correctly install the reciprocal bar.

At closed door on the boat they are trying to accurately mark the upper and lower edges of the castle. A reciprocal bar is applied to the markup, a groove for the magnet is marked. A hole is made with a drill bit. A magnet is placed inside the groove. A reciprocal bar is screwed on top with self-tapping screws, without deepening it flush. If the plate is sunk into the sample, over time, the weakened magnet will no longer hold the canvas.

Installation of stationary handles

There are two types of stationary handles, but they are all easily attached to the door. Overhead models are simply fixed with screws to the surface of the canvas. For a through option, the door is drilled. A threaded pin is inserted through the hole and the handles are screwed on both sides.

Installation of fittings on the door leaf is within the power of each owner. It is important to initially correctly mark up and understand the mechanism of the product.

Interior doors are sold without fittings. Therefore, the purchase and installation of door handles is carried out separately. To do this, you can use the services of a carpenter or insert it yourself.

Types of door handles

When choosing accessories, you need to know what types of handles are, and how they differ from each other. The variety offered in stores allows you to choose them for the style of the room and ensures ergonomic use. Depending on the installation method, products are divided into two classes:

  • invoices;
  • mortise.

Overheads are attached to the surface and, as a rule, there are no difficulties with them. And mortise ones require preliminary preparation of a hole in the door leaf.

Mortise products can be of two types:

  • Rotary, they are also called knob knobs, which, when the handle is turned, open or close the latch that holds the interior door closed. In most cases, they are made in the form of a ball or disk.
  • Pushers work on the same principle as rotary ones, only the mechanism is activated by pressing the handle. As a rule, they are sold together with a lock or latch, hence another name for them - lever latch handles. Fittings with a push mechanism are widely used for both interior and exterior doors.

Which type of product is better to choose depends only on your preferences. You should also consider the style of the room. Designers advise buying them for all doors in the same room the same.

The height at which the door handle should be is not clearly fixed by any standards. On average, it is located at a distance of 1 meter from the floor. This value can fluctuate up or down depending on your preferences. It may also depend on the height of those who will constantly use the door. When installing, you can build on the level at which other handles in the room are located so that their height is the same.

Tools

In order to insert a handle into an interior door, you need to have a certain set of tools. It includes:

  • tape measure, square and pencil;
  • chisel;
  • screwdriver, drill;
  • drill, crown.

Use of all necessary tools greatly simplifies the work process. It is quite possible to embed fittings without a screwdriver and crown, but in this case, the work will take much longer.

Fittings are ideally installed when the canvas is removed from the hinges. If this is not possible, then you need to securely fix it in order to qualitatively and evenly perform marking and tie-in.

Before starting the tie-in, carefully study the instructions for the door handle. All sizes are listed there, and you will know what diameter of the crown and nib you need for work.

The instructions below will help you put the handle on the door leaf and avoid mistakes. And for those who first encountered such a case, it will be useful to watch a video on this topic in order to have a visual idea of \u200b\u200bthe upcoming installation work.

Step-by-step instructions for installing a door handle

  1. Canvas marking.
  2. Drilling a hole for the handle and lock.
  3. Lock installation
  4. Handle notch.
  5. Luke marking.
  6. Cutting a groove in a hole

Let's pay special attention to each stage of work, analyzing it in detail.

Web marking

Installation begins with markings on the door leaf. First you need to decide what height will be chosen for the location of the handle. With the help of a square, tape measure and pencil, places on the canvas are marked in which holes need to be made. To do this, we measure the required distance from the floor and draw a horizontal line with a pencil, first on one side, and then transfer it to the end and the other side.

At the end in the middle of the drawn line, we mark the place where a hole will be made for the lock tongue. On the same line on both sides at the same distance from the beginning of the canvas - this is usually 60 mm - we mark the places where the handle itself will be inserted.

Drilling a hole for the handle and lock

Using a drill and a crown, we make a hole for the door handle. You need to check on each side of the canvas to a depth of half the thickness of the interior door. For convenience, experts recommend making a mark on the outside of the crown with a marker. First, on one side, we drill to the required depth, and then on the other until the drilling is complete. This is done so that the crown does not go to the side and so as not to damage the appearance when selecting material for fittings. You need to hold the drill at an angle of 90 degrees and not allow it to deviate either vertically or horizontally. With the help of a chisel, we smooth out all the bumps.

We make a hole for the lock with a drill and a pen. Work should be carried out carefully, since the distance between the pen and the corner of the butt is not at all large.

Some experts prefer to first make a hole for the latch, and then for the handle. In what order you will do it does not matter.

Lock installation

To install the lock, it must be inserted into the corresponding hole. Overlay, apply on top and circle it around the perimeter with a pencil. Now you need to use a chisel to select the material to a depth equal to the width of the lining in order to drown it in the canvas. For convenience, you can use several chisels of different widths.

The trim is attached to the door with screws. Holes for them are recommended to be made in advance using a thin drill, attaching an overlay and marking the right places with a pencil.

Handle inset

There are products in which the screws are outside. You don't need to parse them. Putting one part in place, you need to get into the holes of the latch with two guides, in which threads for bolts are provided. Then you need to attach the second half and tighten with bolts. You need to twist them evenly so that the handle works well and the latch easily returns back.

Products in which screws are hidden must be disassembled. Included with them are instructions and a key for disassembly. The handle can be easily removed if you find a stopper on it and press on it with a key. The collapsible part is bolted, after which the handle is put in place. Don't use force, assembly should be easy if you do it right.

Loot marking

After installing the handle, you need to make an appropriate hole for the tongue in the loot. Therefore, first of all, it is important to correctly mark the door so that the door closes well and the lock enters the groove without effort and friction.

We close the interior door and mark the top and bottom of the tongue with a pencil on the loot. Using a square, we determine the exact middle of the castle and mark this value on the loot. We make a hole with a drill and a pen and remove excess material with a chisel.

Cutting a groove in a hole

Before screwing the trim, it is important to check how the door closes. This will allow you to be sure that the groove for the tongue is made correctly and there will be no difficulties during operation. When closed, the door should have a slight play, that is, it should stagger a little. This is necessary because the thickness of the latch striker metal will be added to the groove.

The strap is fastened flush with the loot. To do this, as with the installation of the castle, it must be drowned in the loot to the required depth.

A slight play may remain even after you have screwed on the pad. This defect is easy to fix. The striker always has a tongue with a small hole for a screwdriver. It is designed specifically to bend it. Using a flathead screwdriver inserted into this tab, you can adjust the doors by bending it slightly.

The entire described process can be clearly seen on the video on fitting fittings into interior doors. The installation of the handle can be considered successful if it turns easily and the latch enters the groove without friction and effort.

Can you imagine ordinary doors without a handle? It would seem that such a simple design, but in fact a very important attribute. Installing a door handle on an interior door is a task that consumers face when buying and installing a new door leaf. It is quite possible to solve the problem on your own. It is only important not to make a mistake with the choice of design.

Types of door handles

There are various types of handles that are different from each other in color, shape, material, mechanism and installation method. If we take the last feature as the basis for the classification, then two types of handles are distinguished:

  1. Overhead.
  2. Mortise.

Installation of first class products is simple and hassle-free. They are simply fixed to the surface of the canvas, unlike other types of products. Installation of mortise handles involves pre-drilling a hole in the door leaf.

Mortise devices are divided, in turn, into two more types:

When buying accessories, pay special attention to what raw materials it is made from. Products are made of metal, wood, glass or natural stone. They should be selected according to the color and model of the canvas, as well as to the style of the interior.

For sliding systems hidden handles can be installed

It is worth noting that the handles are of a hidden type.. They are designed for sliding systems such as sliding doors. When the doors move, the products do not interfere, do not spoil the wallpaper and walls.

Installation height

At what height to mount the handle, it is not clearly spelled out anywhere. Behind the scenes, it is installed in products made of mdf and timber at a distance of one meter from floor covering. It can be lowered or raised a little - it all depends on the taste of the owner of the living space.

The installation height of the door handle is approximately 1 m

The height of the installation of the product is affected by the growth of the residents. As practice shows, a pen at a distance of 1 m is best option for adults and children. When installing, also consider the level of the handles on other doors. Products must be at the same height.

Required Tools

To put the handle, arm yourself with tools, without which it will not be easy to do this:

  • simple pencil;
  • square;
  • roulette;
  • chisel;
  • screwdriver;
  • drill;
  • drill;
  • crown.

The crown and screwdriver can be replaced with other improvised means, but the quality of work will suffer from this and it will take a lot of time.

Before installation, read the instructions for the product. All sizes are indicated in it, which will help you choose the right radius drill bit and crown.

Step by step installation instructions

If you haven't come across this issue before, don't be afraid. Even someone who is not connected with the construction is able to cope with the installation of the handle. You just need to follow the detailed scheme step by step.

Web marking

The installation of the handle begins with the marking on the door

Marking is where the whole process begins. Having calculated at what height the handle will be located, put marks on the door in those places where the holes will be made.

Use a simple pencil, tape measure and corner and draw a horizontal line on the flat surface of the canvas. Then transfer it to the end and the opposite side of the sash.

We put a mark on the end part of the product in the center of the drawn line. She points to a place designed to deepen under the tongue. From the edge of the leaf at a distance of 0.6 cm, draw a point on both surfaces of the door. This place is for the handle.

Drilling holes for the handle and lock

It doesn’t matter at all in what order you make the holes: first for the handle, and then for the lock, or vice versa. Just remember that business does not like haste.

For the handle, the opening is drilled with a drill and a crown. To make it even and neat, you need to drill from the inside and outside doors to a depth equal to ½ of the leaf thickness.

Masters advise for greater accuracy to mark this depth on the crown with a felt-tip pen. By following this rule, you will definitely not damage the product.. To make the hole even, hold the drill straight and do not allow it to swing to either side.

When drilling a hole for the handle, the drill must be held straight

To insert a latch into an interior door with your own hands, arm yourself with a drill and a pen. In this case, you need to be extremely careful, since the gap between the pen drill and the end angle is small.

Lock installation

The mechanism must be inserted into the opening drilled under it. Press the overlay to the end of the product and outline it with a pencil on all sides.

Then clean the canvas from the top layer with a chisel and make a recess the size of the thickness of the lining. This is done in order to push it into the door.

The lining is fixed with screws. Recesses for them are made even before the implementation of fasteners.

Fixation of the lining is carried out with self-tapping screws

Handle inset

Products with screws located outside do not need to be disassembled. When installing one component of the structure in place, you must try to get into the latch hole with 2 guides equipped with threads for bolts.

Door handle mounting diagram

After that, the second component of the device is inserted and tightened with bolts. It is necessary to screw in uniform movements so that the handle functions normally.

Products with hidden screws must be disassembled. There will be instructions and a special key to help you. The handle is removed without problems by pressing the stopper with a key. The handle is installed in place after the collapsible part is bolted.

Loot marking

Having completed the installation of the handle, make a recess for the tongue in the hole. To do this, you need to correctly measure. Accurate markings are a guarantee of good operation of the lock and the door itself.

To make marks, cover the canvas and mark the distance from the top to the bottom of the tongue on the loot. We find the middle of the castle with a square and put a “cross” in the loot. In the place of the mark, we drill a recess with tools and get rid of excess material with a chisel.

Cutting a groove in a hole

Before screwing the lining, look at how the canvas closes. If there is no friction or other problems, this means that the tongue groove was made correctly.

Close the door and try to pull it slightly. If it staggers, then this indicates the presence of a small backlash. Don't be scared, it's normal. When the reciprocal bar is added to the groove, everything will fall into place.

The answer is attached flush with the loot. In the same way as when installing a lock, it should be drowned in a loot.

The reciprocal bar is attached flush with the loot

Sometimes, after installing the lining, the play does not disappear anywhere and the doors still stagger. This defect can be corrected by bending the tongue with a small hole on the answer with a screwdriver.

Door Hardware Care

For a thing to last long years she needs to be looked after. It's the same with accessories. Over the years, it ages and wears out, which negatively affects the product as a whole. To slow down this process, do not forget to take care of the fittings.

To take care of your hands:

  • Wipe them from dust with water and special cleaning products. Avoid products that contain acids, alkalis and abrasive particles. They can damage the outer coating of the product, resulting in rust. After washing, the product must be wiped with a dry cloth.
  • Tighten the loose handle. If this is not done, the mechanism will break.
  • Protect the product from rough mechanical influences.

In addition to the handle, the door lock also needs your care. In this case, basic care means regular lubrication of the mechanism with special means.. Sometimes sunflower or other vegetable oil is used as a substitute.

Considering that it is not easy to get to many parts of the mechanism, when lubricating, they use special nozzle in the form of a thin tube. Often, for these purposes, the lining is removed or the handle is dismantled.

For lubrication of hard-to-reach places of the handle, a tube nozzle is used.

Thus, having studied the basic subtleties of mounting the handle, you are able to master this task without outside help. The main thing at the same time is to believe in yourself and then the reward in the form of a well-installed pen will not be long in coming.

Installing door handles with your own hands is a simple process, but it requires certain knowledge and accuracy when doing the work. In this review, we will look at the three most common types of pens and understand the advantages and disadvantages of each of the options. We need to choose optimal solution and install it according to the instructions below.

Currently, there is no shortage of pens, the choice is so large that it can be a problem to determine the most suitable option.

  1. Stationary;
  2. Push;
  3. Swivel.

Stationary handles

The oldest type of product that has been used for thousands of years.

First, let's look at their main advantages:

  • Simplicity. There are no elements in the design other than the handle itself and the mounts. Thanks to this, installing such options is much easier than any other. The set of door handles includes only handles and fasteners, which is also important, because you do not have to assemble an ingenious mechanism and figure out how to set it up and install it correctly;

  • Reliability, due to the simplicity of the design and the absence of moving mechanisms in it, there is simply nothing to break in such products. The only problems you may encounter are damage to the coating over time or loosening of fasteners if the handle is pulled frequently. It is possible to break such a structure only if it is made of low-quality material;

  • Classic look. Such handles belong to the classics, therefore they are widely used in the arrangement of the corresponding interiors. Very often they are made in a luxurious style and covered with compositions that imitate patina or precious metals.

Forged versions are also common, they can also be very, very skillful;

  • Ease of installation. Fixing the door handle is within the power of any person - you just need to determine the location of the products, align them relative to, after which the self-tapping screws that come with the kit are screwed in;

  • Various manufacturing materials. You can purchase products made of steel, brass, bronze, aluminum, plastic and composite materials. Wood stands apart, very authentic and unusual handles are obtained from it, very often precious wood is used for their manufacture.

Of course, there are also disadvantages, the main ones are:

  • No locking mechanism. To close such a door, you need to install either a spring latch or a latch, and this is not always convenient. That is why such products are used less often than others and are most often placed in country houses, baths and outbuildings;
  • Small selection. Although the range of this product group is rather big, only a few types of pens are usually found on sale. Most often you have to buy suitable options under the order and wait for delivery for some time.

rotary knobs

This type of product is quite common, and its main feature is that the door opens by turning the outer part.

This is a fairly simple and convenient mechanism, let's analyze its main advantages:

Note! The round shape of the handles has several names -. The difference between them lies in the presence of a locking mechanism, which is activated by turning the handle itself to the left or right. The handle-button does not have it, therefore it belongs to stationary views.

  • Interesting appearance. Most often, handles are spherical or cylindrical in shape and look good on doors. There are many options for execution, so picking up something for your doors is usually not difficult;
  • Availability of original designs. They themselves are an adornment of any interior and can have a wide variety of colors or patterns on the surface - there are even crystal options, their price is high, but their appearance is luxurious;
  • compactness- This option takes up little space and is well suited for limited space. In addition, the mechanism is also compact, which greatly simplifies its insertion into the door leaf;
  • Safety. If you hit such a handle, then the likelihood of injury is low, unlike push options. Therefore, such products are often put by those who have small children.

Now let's deal with the disadvantages of rotary knobs:

  • Low coverage reliability. Due to active use, the decorative layer begins to collapse, which worsens the appearance, and accessories for door handles are not sold separately, and you will either have to use peeled products or change them to new ones;

Advice! As practice shows, chrome-plated products are much more reliable than gold and bronze options. Keep this in mind when choosing a specific solution.

  • Poor workmanship. Most of the products on the market are not very reliable and durable. Repairing door handles is not a pleasant occupation, and spare parts are not always available, especially if you have some kind of unusual option. In order not to have problems, try to choose products from those manufacturers that are widely represented on the market, at least there will be no problems with repairs;

  • Impossibility to install other types of handles. If you decide to put a rotary option, then keep in mind that during installation you will have to cut a large hole in the door leaf. After that, putting a lever or another option will not work, you will have to constantly put the same type of structure.

Push handles

This is without a doubt the most popular and common option, which is found literally everywhere. It consists of two L-shaped handles connected by a square, with which the door latch opens when pressed.

As for the main advantages, they are as follows:

  • Ease of use - it is very easy to open and close the doors, and if the rotary options need to be moved by hand, then the pressure ones can also be opened with your elbow if your hands are busy. Most often, the handles are ergonomically shaped, which is also important, but to appreciate the convenience, it is better to buy products where there are showcases for door handles so that you can hold on to them;

  • A huge range of products, you can find options for all kinds of colors and designs. You can decide for yourself which color of door handles to choose, which significantly expands the possibilities of decorating the room. There are also budget options, and the middle segment of the premium product, everyone will find a suitable solution;

  • Maintainability. Most often, the mechanisms are interchangeable, so there are usually no problems with repairs. And in terms of reliability, this option looks preferable to the one described above, since the lever unlocking system is more wear-resistant and durable.

It should be noted that such products are of two types:

  1. Socket handles. Mounted on a small base, under them you can use different locking mechanisms. If a latch or lock is needed, then an additional socket is placed below, it has the same coating as the main element;

  1. Handles on the bar are more often used on entrance structures, but there are also options for interior doors. In them, the base of the handle is a bar, in the lower part of which there is a keyhole or latch.

Of the minuses, one can only single out a more complicated installation process, since the work requires accuracy, and any errors can lead to damage to the door leaf.

Description of the installation process

Now let's figure out how to put the handles yourself. Two options will be considered - rotary and pressure structures. There is no point in disassembling stationary ones, everything is simple there - you determine the installation location, and screw it on.

Installation of rotary handles

To get started, you should stock up on everything you need.

Naturally, you need a set of door handles, the following tools will also be used:

  • Feather drills;
  • Drills for wood or metal;
  • A hammer;
  • Chisel;
  • Screwdriver;
  • Roulette, pencil and square;
  • Drill;
  • Wrench;
  • Crown on wood.

Installation instructions for door handles of a rotary type look like this:

Illustration Description

The location of the element is determined. European standards for door handles and domestic GOST prescribe a height of 1 meter, it is considered convenient for a person. Therefore, first of all, draw lines a hundred centimeters from the floor.

Your lock is taken, and markings are made on the door leaf. It makes no sense to give specific recommendations - it all depends on the model and size of the pen. Read the instructions, and everything will immediately become clear to you. Usually you need to drill two small holes for the through fasteners, and one larger one for the mechanism.

Advice! It is better to drill half the thickness of the web on each side, this is the most accurate way.

After finishing the work, you should get something like this - a large hole in the middle and two small ones on the side.

The main thing is to ensure that drilling is carried out on the same line. Otherwise, an offset will result, due to which installation can become very complicated.

If you can purchase a special template for inserting door handles, then the work will be greatly simplified. You will need to set it at the required height, fix it on the canvas and drill holes in the right places.

No measurements and no error. But templates are not suitable for all pens, so check in advance if this system can be used in your case.

A hole is also drilled under the core, its diameter is usually 25-27 mm. It is important to find the middle at the end of the door leaf and keep the drill strictly horizontal during operation. If anything, you can make certain edits, the main thing is not to move the hole too much.

sidebar door hinges and handles is impossible without sampling the grooves for the elements, in our case it is necessary to make a recess under the latch platform. To do this, the mechanism is placed in the hole, and its outer part is outlined along the perimeter.

Then, using a chisel, a layer of wood about 3 mm thick is removed. First, punch the material around the perimeter, and then remove layer by layer until you get the desired result.

In the process of sampling the recess, constantly check how the latch becomes. It is better to do it once more than to overdo it and shoot too much. The work is simple, but painstaking, it is important to do everything as carefully as possible, the appearance of the structure depends on it.

After the latch is perfectly in place, it must be fixed with the screws that come with the kit. Tighten them carefully so as not to turn the fastener in the material and thereby weaken it.

The design of the handle is divided into two parts, one of them will have mounting bushings, which is what we need in the first place.

First, a part with bushings and a square is placed under the latch. It must be carefully positioned and pressed firmly to make sure that everything is in order and the socket fits snugly against the door leaf.

The handle is placed on the other side, the holes on it are combined with the bushings. Then two coupling screws are screwed in, which will hold the structure.

The work is almost finished, but most likely you still have spare parts for door handles, namely the counterpart and fasteners for it. Let's figure out what to do with it.

Close the door and note at what level the latch is located. Then attach the counterpart according to the marks and mark the place where you need to drill a recess for the tongue. Lastly, the bar is screwed to the door, this is the end of the job.

The photo shows what a properly assembled structure looks like. Everything is neat and secure. The door can be used.

Installing lever handles

Now let's deal with this option. Naturally, the technology can be different, since the production of door handles is established in many countries and everywhere there are standards. We will analyze the most common latch option, which is great for interior doors.

Illustration Description

Marking work is being done. Above we said that the standard installation height of door handles is 1 meter, although you can arrange them as you like, it all depends on you.

With the help of a tape measure, a clear mark is placed.

To clearly mark the door on both sides and from the end, the easiest way is to use a construction square. It is pressed tightly against the edge of the canvas, after which a line is drawn. So you will achieve perfect marking accuracy on both sides of the door leaf.

Now you need to decide where to drill a hole for the latch square. To do this, the latch is applied to the door so that the drawn line is in the middle of the square hole.

Keep in mind that the mounting plate will sink into the surface, so position it flush with the end of the door.

Do the same for the other side of the door.

This is how your result should look like. There is no need to chase the accuracy of the markup, it is important to determine exactly where the center of our hole will be, anyway we will make it a little larger than the size of the tetrahedron so that the element can move.

A hole is made using a drill or screwdriver. For work, a drill with a diameter of 12 mm is used, you can take the 10 mm option, but then you have to slightly drill the hole so that a tetrahedron enters it.

The work is done as follows: first, on one side, you need to go deep by about half the thickness of the canvas, then the same is done on the other side, and then you can go through. This is the most accurate way, if you go through on one side, then there is a high probability of displacement.

This is how the result of the work looks, everything is clear and even. Make sure the square fits and can spin inside.

Now you need to mark the end for the core. To do this, a tetrahedron is inserted into the hole, a core is put on it and marks are made from above and below. Next, you need to mark a point strictly in the middle of the canvas, this will be our main guideline in the first stage.

First, a hole is drilled in the middle. Any suitable drill is used for work, but usually a thicker option is taken so that later there is less work to expand the recess with a chisel.

Since the core has a rectangular or square shape, the hole for it is completed with a chisel. Just knock out a recess according to the required size to the desired depth. This is perhaps the most time-consuming and lengthy stage. It's simple, but it takes a lot of time.

After the hole is made, the latch is inserted and a notch is marked, which must be made for recessing the mounting plate.

Everything is simple here: align the element so that it is parallel to the door leaf and carefully draw lines around the perimeter.

In order not to remove the excess when removing wood, first of all, you need to cut through the material along the perimeter to a depth of 3 mm. It's simple: the chisel is attached to the surface, after which it must be hit 2-3 times with a hammer. And so around the perimeter.

The removal of wood is carried out carefully and little by little - a little tweak later is easier than removing too much. Periodically insert the latch to control where and how much to remove. If necessary, you can cut the tree around the perimeter again.

Next, you need to make holes for the fasteners. They must be through, as the handle is pulled together with special fasteners. Measurements are made and holes are drilled at the required distance. Everything is done here, as in the case above: work is done on both sides at half the depth of the door leaf.

The core is fastened with two screws, after which you need to check its performance. Insert the square and turn it, the latch should move with little resistance.

The handles are aligned along the holes, after which special screws are screwed into them, they enter the sleeve and securely fix the structure on the canvas.

For reliability, it is screwed into the handles under two more self-tapping screws. They are included in the delivery.

Last of all, decorative covers are placed on the sockets, they cover the fasteners and give the handle a more attractive look.

This completes the work, it remains to put only the counterpart, this process is described above, it makes no sense to repeat here.

Conclusion

Now you all know about the types of door handles and how to install them. As you can see, putting the handles is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. You must follow all the recommendations and do everything very carefully. The video in this article will help you understand the issue even better, watch it if you are going to do the work yourself.

Handles are mandatory in the kit of any door, otherwise you simply cannot open them. Many developers do not pay enough attention to door handles, believing that their main purpose is to assist residents in opening and closing the door. However, the handles have yet to withstand the heavy loads of the door and fit into the overall design of the room. It seems, at first glance, that it is very easy to install this fitting on interior doors. However, in this case, deviations from the instructions for installing the door handle are not allowed!

Purpose of door handles

Before you directly engage in the installation of door handles, you must first buy accessories. To do this, you should decide on the model and manufacturer of the pen. This is not too easy to do, since the market offers a rich variety of fittings that differ from each other. appearance, size, price and material used.

First of all, door handles are divided into two types: for interior and entrance doors. The fittings for the front door should be not so much aesthetic as reliable and durable, because they have an enormous load, since it is unlikely that it will be possible to open the heavy front door to the apartment without pressing the handle. Often, door handles for entrance doors are equipped with special steel plates and combine the functions of protectors, that is, they serve to protect the cylinder mechanism from drilling, breaking and other forced breaking methods.

Handles for interior doors are less massive in appearance, they are supposed to be more beautiful and elegant according to their intended purpose. But no one canceled their reliability, because no one will like it when the handle remains constantly in the hand when opening or closing the interior door.

The principle of operation of the handles

When buying door handles, it is recommended to pay special attention to their functionality and adaptability to hand movements. Depending on the principle of operation and the shape of this fitting, the following types of door handles are distinguished: push, stationary, push-button (nobs) and handles for sliding doors.

Push handles

Push handles are equipped with a latch that is embedded in the door. When the handle is pressed, the lock tongue is set in motion, the latch is hidden, and the door opens. When the door handle is in its original position, the latch is extended and the interior door is locked. Thus, the installation of a push-type door handle is only possible if the door is equipped with a lock with a latch.

Push-type handles, in turn, are divided into two types: models with separate overlays and with a solid overlay. Lever handles, which have a solid pad, are usually used with latch and deadbolt locks, which are actuated with a key. When selecting such a handle, the center distance between the axis of the keyhole and the handle, the width of the lining, the shape of the turnkey keyhole and the section of the profile pin of the door handle are taken into account.

Separate escutcheon handles are also used with locks that have a latch latch and a deadbolt actuated by a key. However, when selecting these handles, the center distance is not taken into account, only the size of the pads is taken into account. If a lock without a deadbolt with only a latch is used in an interior door, then it is customary to install a push handle with one rosette. In this case, the key is no longer needed.

Push button handles

Knobs are a type of push handles, often referred to as ball handles. There is no lever to press, and to act on the latch, you must turn the ball. A keyhole is usually located in the center of such a ball. The handle opens the door with a simple turn. It is customary to install noba door handles on the door to the bathroom or bathroom, they can be closed from the outside with a key, and from the inside - with a button or latch.

Stationary handles

Stationary handles, unlike push models, are in no way connected with door lock. They cannot be turned or pressed, but can only be pushed away from you or pulled towards you. Install the stationary handle simply on the door leaf: fix such fittings on entrance doors on tightening screws, and on interior doors - on screws. Stationary handles may have different shape, but the most common of them is U-shaped (bracket).

Since such a handle is completely unrelated to the lock, a lock with a latch latch will not work in this case; a lock with a roller latch and a deadbolt or only with a deadbolt is preferable. Such a roller latch will fix the door, easily releasing it when the door is opened.

Sliding door handles

The sliding door is a non-standard solution in interior design. doors similar design require the installation of a special handle. Handles for sliding doors are built-in, “drowned” inside the door leaf itself. They need to be true to size inner door in order to avoid poor quality construction.

door handle material

The materials from which handles are made can be different, but most often you can find handles made of metal and wood. Wooden handles look very nice, they are especially harmonious for veneered and wooden doors. However, they are most often afraid of high humidity, and are not suitable for use in the bathroom. To abrasion racks only handles made of hardwood.

Metal handles can be made from different alloys, and therefore their performance characteristics differ. The most functional and reliable handles are made of brass. They are resistant to changes in humidity and temperature, light, durable and warm to the touch. Aluminum handles are not as strong as brass, but they can be placed in rooms with high level humidity.

For the manufacture of door handles, ordinary and stainless steel is used. This is a durable material that is intended for the heaviest structures. On models made of alloys or metals, it is customary to apply a nickel-plated or chrome-plated coating, which protects products from abrasion and corrosion. Also, Bohemian or Murano glass is used for the manufacture of door fittings, a natural stone and plastic.

Do-it-yourself door handle installation

Despite the wide variety of door handles, their installation comes down to performing the same steps. Let's take a closer look at how to choose and how to properly install a doorknob on a door.

Choosing a door handle

The handle for the door must necessarily comply with the general style decision interior. For example, if your house is furnished in high-tech style, then it is better to give preference to concise chrome-plated handles, and leave luxurious gilded items with elaborate elements for rooms in the rococo or baroque style. For interiors in classical style it is better to choose bronze door handles.

In addition, the handle must fit under the door according to color scheme. The visible parts of any door are hinges and locks, so the handle should match them in color. On massive doors, you should not choose a weak handle, because it will quickly break under loads. Wooden handles should not be installed in damp rooms.

The handle must not adversely affect the functioning of the door locking mechanism. An improperly selected handle delivers a lot of trouble: the door does not open or close well. Therefore, before going to the store, it is worth measuring the thickness of the door leaf to find out if the model you like is right for you.

Make sure that all the mechanisms of the handle work properly, and that the lock tongue is completely hidden inside the case. And finally, when buying, it is recommended to touch the handle to find out how comfortable it will lie in the palm of your hand.

Handle installation height

Before installing the door handle, you need to decide at what height you will install it. If you are replacing fittings, then it will be a little easier here, because you have to put the handle back in its original place. The situation with the new door leaf is somewhat more complicated. Remember that door handles in any case should be located at the level of the person’s belt.

When opening the door with the door handle, the arm must necessarily be bent at a right angle in the elbow joint. Depending on the height of the owners, the installation height of the door handle is 80 - 120 centimeters from the floor surface. Please note that the handle on the door that leads to the children's room should be placed slightly lower than on the door to the living room or parent's bedroom.

Door leaf marking

It is recommended to mark the door leaf with a square. Draw a line on one side of the door with a well-sharpened pencil, attach a square and mark on the door with an awl the height of the door handle at a distance of 60 millimeters. Then attach a square and draw the end of the door, after which you can start marking on the other side.

Continue the line on the other side of the door along the finished line and make a mark with an awl at a distance of 60 millimeters. It is also necessary to make a puncture on the butt line with an awl, dividing the thickness of the door in half. After that, attach the fittings to the installation site so that the tongue protrudes completely beyond the borders of the door leaf. In this position, circle the place where you will need to drill a hole for the handle mechanism.

Drilling holes in the door

To drill a larger hole for installing the handle, it is recommended to use a special drill that has a crown. To do this, take a drill, clamp the crown on the tree and drill through the door leaf on one side. Drill not through, but to a depth that is equal to half the thickness of the door, having previously looked at how to install the door handle on the video. To make it visible, you can make a mark on the crown with a marker.

Then drill a hole along the markings on the other side of the door until it is completely drilled out. With this technique, you can be sure that the crown at the exit will not spoil the back of the door and will not go to the side. Hold the drill at a 90 degree angle to the door. Do not allow the drill to deviate horizontally and vertically.

Once you've drilled the hole for the mechanism, it's time to make a hole for the handle's tongue. You can drill it with a feather drill or using a chisel. The most important thing is to control that the drill drills evenly, because only about 6 millimeters will remain at the edges. If you can remove the door, then it can be passed between the legs for easier drilling.

Door handle fixing

When all the necessary holes are prepared, you can begin to install the door handle with your own hands. First you need to take the handle for the door, attach it to the installation site and mark with an awl the points for installing the bolts on which the handle itself will be attached on both sides. To perform this operation, install the mechanism of this design in the drilled hole and screw both halves with the bolts included in the kit.

Bolts must be tightened evenly. Remember that the tightening should be such that the door handle works well and the latch easily returns to its original time. Handles in which the bolts are located under the cap, and therefore are not visible, should be disassembled by pressing the stopper on the handle with the key that comes with the door handle.

Installation of a metal frame

After you have installed a round door handle or another type of handle, you need to proceed with the installation of a metal plate. To do this, again, you need to make a markup. There are two marking methods. The first of these lies in the fact that the end of the tongue should be smeared, for example, with chalk, oil, paint or even toothpaste. Then hide the tongue in the door, close it tightly and make an open-close movement several times so that the tongue makes a mark on the door frame.

The second way is as follows: close the door, slide the ruler into the slot above the tongue and make a mark at the place where it touches the tongue, also mark the bottom of the tongue. To attach a metal frame to the box, you should mark a hole for the tongue and the plate itself. First of all, you need to make a selection under the tongue with a chisel or pen drill.

Having made a hole for the tongue, it is necessary to check whether the tongue comes out of the latch completely and whether the door closes. If everything is fine, then you can start creating a sample for the frame, which is also done using a chisel. The metal frame inserted into the sample should be at the same level with the surface of the box.

The metal frame is screwed to the box with screws. To do this, drill holes using a thin drill, then the screws will lie without distortion. After performing such manipulations, you can close the door to evaluate the result of your work. If the handles open and close easily, the latch moves freely, the door can be closed by light pressing without effort, then such a door handle installation can be called successful.

Door handle replacement procedure

It often happens that it becomes necessary to reinstall the handle on old door. The procedure for replacing fittings is somewhat different from the scheme for installing a door handle on a new door, since a hole for the product mechanism already exists, and its dimensions should be taken into account. We recommend that you take advantage of some of our tips:

  1. When buying a new door handle, you should consider that it should be no smaller than the old one. Otherwise, the old hole for the mechanism will not be closed, which will spoil the whole look of the door. If it still happened, you need to fill the holes on both sides with wood putty and sand this place with sandpaper.
  2. If you purchased a handle larger than the previous one, then you need to expand the hole for the mechanism. This is done using tools that are used to create a hole for the handle mechanism.
  3. If the new door handle is shorter than the old one, and the old spindle is not suitable for it, then it must be replaced with a new one from the door handle kit. And if the spindle is suitable, then you should use it to get rid of unnecessary hassle that may affect the quality of mounting the handle.
  4. If the lock bar is painted but you want to restore its original metallic shine, then in this situation it is recommended to remove this part before installing the door handle and remove the paint with special means, then return the part to its place.
  5. If you decide to paint the door, then you should first remove the door handles and paint the area that is located under them, and only after that you can proceed to further painting the door leaf - this allows you to carefully apply the coloring composition to the door, and also protect the fittings from getting on it paints.

Now you know how to install a doorknob. The whole procedure will take you a matter of minutes if you correctly mark the door leaf and door frame, and evenly drill holes for the mechanism and the tongue of the door handle. By analogy, you can also replace the old handle if it breaks, but you need to carefully consider the selection of new fittings.
