Samui areas. All the beaches of Koh Samui: a detailed review with a photo

It began to develop rapidly in recent decades: there are more and more hotels in the resorts, and the surrounding areas are being improved and transformed. However, the eastern part of the coast is still the most popular, the north is also good, but the western and southern sections have no infrastructure and can be dirty.

All beaches on the island are free, including those belonging to hotels or restaurants, however, sunbeds cannot be borrowed on the latter. The road to many places passes through the territory of hotels, but vacationers should not be shy, no one will stop them or make a remark.

But this is redundant

Bang Po

In the northern part of Koh Samui (Bang Po Beach, Mae Nam, Ko Samui District, Surat Thani) there is a 6-kilometer Bang Po beach: a well-maintained, clean and quiet space with coarse yellow sand. Local residents and those who stay on the island for the winter often come here - the cost of renting housing here is low. Along the sea there are several medium-sized hotels price category and many cafes and restaurants. Entertainment, as well as tourists, is practically non-existent. The entrance to the water is gentle, the resort is great for families with children. There are no sun loungers, but you can sunbathe right on the towel. There are no toilets, changing cabins and showers either, but you can go to the toilet in any hotel or cafe, as a rule, they let you in for free, but you may be asked to make an order.

Baan Tai

Another northern beach with fine, very light sand (65/10 Baan Tai, Koh Samui, Maenam, Surat Thani 84330). The entry into the sea is the smoothest on the entire island, but, unfortunately, the water blooms a lot, so swimming is not very pleasant. At the very end there is a section where the algae are removed, but there are always a lot of vacationers there.

Palm trees grow on the shore, leaning low over the water, so Baan Tai is very popular with those who want to take pictures in the bounty style. There are several cafes right by the water with their own sun loungers, you don’t need to pay for their rent, just order a drink or food. There are usually locker rooms and there is an opportunity to visit the toilet. There are no showers on the beach, just like entertainment and trade.

Maenam

A 5-kilometer strip of yellow coarse sand in the north of the island is called Maenam (2 Tambon Mae Nam, Amphoe Ko Samui, Chang Wat Surat Thani). This is a quiet, calm, very beautiful and not too popular place among tourists, overgrown with palm trees. There are few people on the beach, no entertainment and merchants. The resort is popular with vacationers with children: the entrance to the water is gentle, the bottom is soft.

During the rainy season, there are usually high waves, so swimming is not possible, and during the dry season, the sea is calm.

Sun loungers and umbrellas are found either on the territory of hotels or near cafes. Outsiders are not allowed on hotel sun loungers, and in the establishment you need to make an order in order to take a free seat. There are also several pavilions for massage. There are no toilets, changing cabins or showers on the beach.

In the eastern part of the beach on the cape there is a small area belonging to the W-Resort hotel, this is the most beautiful area of the entire island, people often come here to take pictures.

Bo Phut

This beach is also located in the northern part of Koh Samui (Bophut Beach Ko Samui District Surat Thani), but in popularity it is comparable to the eastern lands. There are always a lot of vacationers here, you can go parasailing, ride jet skis and experience other types of entertainment. Hotels, restaurants, bars, massage pavilions lined up along the coast, and on Fridays there is a market on the embankment. The sand both on the beach and in the water is yellow and very soft, the entrance to the sea is gentle, and there are practically no strong waves - ideal for relaxing with kids. There is a paid toilet on the shore (10 THB), you can also go to a cafe for this purpose. There are no showers or changing rooms.

Sun loungers and umbrellas can be rented at the cafe, although most of them provide seats for a paid food order.

Bang Rak

Less popular small place near the airport (Bangrak Pier Surat Thani Thailand Tambon Bo Put, Amphoe Ko Samui, Chang Wat Surat Thani). On the shore there is soft sand yellow color, but swimming is not too pleasant - there are large stones at the bottom.

The infrastructure is well developed, water activities work in the high season, for example: parasailing and jet skis, sunbeds are usually rented in a cafe "for a drink". There are no showers and changing cabins, the toilet can be used in any cafe or hotel. There are several large shops near the beach that will be of interest to those who plan to go shopping.

Nearby is the Big Buddha Temple with a giant golden Buddha statue - one of the most famous shrines of the island.

Tong Son

A romantic and secluded place where the north coast of the island ends (2/32 Moo 5 Plai Laem soi 7, T.Bophut, Bo phut). There are few people here, very beautiful nature, impressive sunsets and poorly developed infrastructure. There is no entertainment, sun loungers can only be found next to the cafe, where they are provided for ordering food or drinks, you can also go to the toilet there. There are no showers or changing rooms. Due to the gentle entrance to the water, families with children often come here. The only negative is the high prices in hotels.

Fine, light, very soft sand and a blue sea framed by palm trees make Thong Son incredibly photogenic.

Choeng Mon

Choeng Mon (Choeng Mon Beach, Bo Put, Ko Samui District, Surat Thani) opens up a string of eastern beaches - beautiful, with a good variety of infrastructure, but quite crowded. This is a small stretch of coast with fine, yellow-gray sand, a gentle entry into the water, a clean and calm sea. Vacationers with kids like to come here.

There are hotels, restaurants, cafes, massage pavilions along the coast, merchants and people constantly walk along the beach offering all kinds of water activities: parasailing, jet skis, bananas, etc. There are paid toilets (10 THB), occasionally there are changing cabins.

Chaweng

South of Choeng Mon is the most famous beach of the island - Chaweng (Chaweng Beach, Ko Samui District, Surat Thani), which is famous for its parties and nightly fun. This is a two-kilometer section, to which two more zones adjoin - Chaweng Yai and Chaweng Noi. Gentle White sand, wide coastline, clean, warm sea with a gentle entrance - this is what the beach looks like. There are a lot of people on the shore, almost all of it is filled with sun loungers, which local cafes and hotels offer for rent for 100 THB.

There is plenty of entertainment: jet skis, water skis, bananas, boats, parasailing, in addition, there are massage pavilions, cafes and restaurants, hotels and merchants. For children there is a small water park with inflatable slides. In the evenings, vacationers flock to discos and bars. The beach is equipped with toilets, showers and changing rooms. Prices on the page are for November 2018.

It is worth coming here only for those who love noisy, cheerful and very leisure. The rest may seem too crowded and too cheerful. A slightly quieter section is Chaweng Noi.

coral cove

A small and very picturesque piece of the coast, which is difficult to access, but still popular with travelers (Coral Cove Beach, Bo Put, Ko Samui District, Surat Thani). The yellow sandy beach, bright blue sea and low cliffs make the place cozy and secluded. In the rainy season, there can be high waves, but the rest of the time it's nice to swim. But this beach is not very suitable for families with children, as the sea becomes deep already a few meters from the shore. There are no toilets, showers and changing rooms on the shore, but tourists are allowed to use the toilets in the hotel lobby.

Crystal Bay

Many call Crystal Bay the most beautiful on Koh Samui (Crystal Bay Beach, Maret, Ko Samui District, Surat Thani). The coast is covered with fine white sand, the water is either turquoise or azure depending on the light, large rocks and green hills around - the place is ideal for families with children, for beautiful photos, and for a relaxing pastime, since there are no entertainment and discos here. There is a paid toilet with a shower, where you can also change clothes.

Sunbeds can be rented at the cafe, for this you need to pay for the order. Hotels, as a rule, do not allow anyone other than guests to use their sun loungers.

Lamai

Lamai (Maret Ko Samui District, Surat Thani 84310) is the second most popular beach on Koh Samui. It is a little quieter and calmer than Chaweng, but here there are entertainments for both young and older vacationers. Cafes and restaurants, massages and pedicures, jet skis and parachutes, parties and discos - all this is the rich life of Lamai. There are toilets, showers and changing rooms.

The sand is yellow, fine in the central part, and quite coarse along the edges. Swimming is also best in the middle, as there are large stones and corals on the sides at the bottom.

Renting a pair of sun loungers with an umbrella, which are offered in almost every cafe, will cost 200 THB.

Hua Thanon

Most south beach east coast (117 Moo 2, Tambon Maret, Koh Samui, Amphoe Ko Samui, Chang Wat Surat Thani). It is not very popular with tourists, but kitesurfers often gather here, as well as those who want to play volleyball or go jogging. Yellow sand, a gentle entrance to the sea, pretty palm trees leaning towards the water, a large number of hotels and a minimum of entertainment - just right for those who prefer a calm and measured rest. There are no sun loungers on the beach, as well as toilets, showers and changing rooms.

Near the beach there is a butterfly park, an aquarium and a zoo with tigers; travelers with children often come here.

Western and southern beaches

The beaches of Bang Kao, Thong Krut, Taling Ngam, Nathon and Laem Yai are located in the southern and western parts of the island. These are practically wild sections of the coast, where there is no developed infrastructure, hotels and restaurants. The places here may not be too clean, but the rest is quiet and secluded.

Today I will tell you how things are on Koh Samui in the summer, in June, July and August, and why the summer months are best time for holidays on Koh Samui. Many will argue that Thailand has a rainy season in summer. Most tourists believe that in June, July and August it rains around the clock and in the summer it is definitely not worth relaxing on Koh Samui. Is it really?

Weather and beaches on Koh Samui in June look like in the photo

We knew that Koh Samui is very good in summer, both in terms of weather and recreation in general. A couple of blogs flashed such information that there is no rain in Koh Samui in summer, and the weather and the sea are much better than in the first months of the high season. In early June, we arrived on the island and saw for ourselves.

Why summer is the best time to visit Koh Samui

The rainy season on Koh Samui begins in September and continues through December-January, sometimes even until February it continues to flood. Then in March, the weather is finally great, but then April and May are when the driest and hottest months come, which is also not the best time to relax. The temperature is + 35C, I don’t want to go outside again ...

Officially, the high season on Koh Samui begins in October-November and lasts until April, early May. That is, in New Year, as elsewhere, the peak season on the island. Tourist season, but not natural. Rains at this time are frequent, the sea is muddy, there are waves on all beaches, garbage is washed ashore. But since the high season, there will be a lot of tourists everywhere, crowds of Chinese at all sights and vacationers on the beaches in rare moments of the sun.

All hotels on Koh Samui

This is how Lamai Beach looks like in November, when the high season has already begun. Reminds me of Pattaya?

In February and March, most likely everything is fine with the weather, but not with the beaches, the water will still be muddy. In April, the heat begins. And by May the island is gradually empty. The winterers have already gone home. Packages almost never come, as travel agencies tell them that it rains in Thailand in the summer. The beaches and streets are empty. Everyone was scared by the approaching rainy season ...

Empty Walking street on Lamai (photo June)

Few people know that the rainy season here is in autumn and not in summer. And in the summer on Koh Samui the weather is the most comfortable, + 30C + 32C, the cleanest sea and there are practically no tourists.

Who among you dreamed of a vacation in a popular resort without tourists? Welcome to Koh Samui in the summer months!

Is a chic beach without tourists a dream? In July it's real!
(Photo: Lamai beach)

Also, from the delights of the low season, reduced housing prices are added. Many hotels drop their prices by 50% or even more. Do you want to relax in a 4-star resort on the first line for 1200 baht per day? No problem!

Summer weather on Koh Samui

Oddly enough, but on the island of Koh Samui, apparently, there is some kind of climate, separate from the rest of Thailand. The rainy season here is in autumn. And in June, July, August it is sunny. It also rains, but not more often than usual, maybe a couple of times a week, more often in the evening or at night.

It's always sunny in the morning

It does not rain every day, usually in the afternoon, short-term for 20-30 minutes

In the evening, most often the sky is covered with clouds. Well, okay, the sunset would still not be visible here.

Weather forecast sites such as gismeteo.com and pogoda.yandex.ru report rain and thunderstorms every day. But in fact, the weather is sunny almost every day.

Clouds may appear in the afternoon. The temperature is conducive to walking fresh air. During the day, on average + 31С, at night + 26С.

You can always see what the weather is like now, connecting to a webcam at Thongtakian Beach. The webcam shows the video in live, so you can easily find out what the weather is like, if there are clouds, what kind of waves, etc. Only you need to look not at night, but during the day. Time in Thailand +4 hours to Moscow.

What is the sea and waves on Koh Samui in summer

What is most pleasant, the sea in June, July and August is the most calm and clean. There are no waves on all the main beaches. It doesn’t happen day after day, of course, but most often the sea is clear, no garbage, either natural or human, floats in the water. Perhaps the best time for swimming! It is especially convenient to go to Koh Samui in summer with a child. Swimming with children in the sea will be ideal, the water is clean and there are no waves. Jellyfish were also never seen.

The sea at Lamai at its best(photo: June 2016)

Sea in Chaweng

Sea on Mainam. Same in Bophut

The calmest and most transparent sea on our favorite Tongtakian beach (aka Silver Beach or Crystal Bay)

Koh Samui beaches in summer

Lamai

The sea is perfect in summer. The water temperature is +28C, judging by the forecasts of Gismeteo and Yandex, and many beaches in Thailand can envy the transparency. Waves are sometimes small, swimming does not interfere. Several times I saw a completely calm sea on Lamai beach. If in the high season on Lamai Beach it is dirty, muddy and there are waves, there is no desire to swim, then in summer there is beauty, cleanliness and in general in summer this is one of the best beaches on Koh Samui.

Chaweng

In summer, the water is blue and clear. We never saw any debris in the water. They wrote to us in the comments about the muddy bottom, but we did not notice this, there is a pleasant sand everywhere at the bottom.

Maenam

Deserted in summer. Just a dream of someone who is tired of people and wants to relax alone, when there is no one within a radius of at least 100 meters. Only rare merchants can spoil the relaxation.

Bophut

During the summer, he lives a busy life. Perhaps Bophut has the most tourists in the summer. We walked around Fisherman Village, sat in a cafe, here you can’t say that it’s low season. All restaurants have visitors, many walk along the beach street, sunbathers are located on the beach, the hotel pool Hansar Samui Resort & Spa filled with bathers.

Other beaches

Also not deprived of the attention of vacationers. Despite the "low season" and its little known, there are a certain number of people on the beach of the Crystal Bay Hotel, and in the shade under a tree it is quite crowded. There are no waves at all, the water is calm, like in a pond.

Practically empty. Now there are literally 3-5 couples on the entire beach, which are evenly distributed along the beach on their mats, some in the shade, some sunbathing. A couple of people are sitting in the water near the shore (we already told you that this beach is not very suitable for swimming).

Coral Cove Beach

Where to stay on Koh Samui

On the island of Ko Samui, not all beaches are as heavenly as they seem. Roughly speaking, only 4 large beaches are suitable for swimming - Lamai, Chaweng, Bophut and Maenam. You can also swim in several small ones that are between them, such as Tongtakian, Chaweng Noi, Thongson, Choeng Monk. We have compiled several convenient selections of hotels with good reviews on all major beaches suitable for swimming.

Living on Koh Samui, of course, we visited almost everything beaches of Koh Samui🙂 I am often asked which beach is the best on Koh Samui, which beach of Koh Samui is best for families with children, which Koh Samui beach to choose for youth holidays, which beach is best for wintering?

I can say that we are all different and what one likes is not necessarily like another. In this article, a small overview of the beaches of Koh Samui. Please note that this is my subjective opinion 🙂

Koh Samui beaches on the map

The beaches of Koh Samui: a review

Let's start in order with the most popular beach 😎

We move along the ring road of the island to the south. The next beach is the beach or South Chaweng. You can get to the beach only through hotels or through the coastal restaurant Bistro Samui. The beach is long, wide coastline, fine white sand, pleasant waves in winter and complete calm in summer. Good for families with children. On the left near the stones you can swim with a mask. This beach is my favorite, and indeed the best beach on Koh Samui! If I come to Koh Samui on vacation, I will choose Chaweng Noi Beach, and I advise it to all my friends! Detailed article about hotels on Chaweng Noi beach.

Further south is the beach - this very romantic, secluded beach is only 130 meters long, located in a small bay and surrounded on both sides by rocky cliffs and bizarre boulders. There are only three hotels on the beach. The sand on the beach is yellow and coarse, the sea is almost immediately deep. Waves in winter. Suitable for lovers of romance. This beach is also one of our favorites. But also not for life, but for relaxing on the beach and swimming in the sea.

Beach or Thongtakian or Silver Beach - that's how many names one beach has - a beautiful beach in a cozy bay with a length of about 300 meters. There are several hotels on the beach, soft sand, lush vegetation. Minus - the entrance to the sea is not very good, there are stones and algae in the sea. Beach for a quiet relaxing holiday. Read about all the hotels on Crystal Bay beach.

Beach - the length of the coastline is about 4 km, just like Chaweng beach is divided into three parts: northern, central and southern. The tides are pronounced in the northern part. The central part is ideal for swimming. The sand is yellowish and coarse, in winter there are often waves. Lamai Beach is not as party and noisy as Chaweng, but all the infrastructure is present here, there is a market, shops, Tesco Lotus, Makro, many restaurants and cafes. Prices are generally not high. Lamai Beach is an ideal choice for both leisure and long stays. It was Lamai that I chose to live on Koh Samui. About our house on Lamai.

To the south along the ring road is the beach, which I call the beach for myself, because. it is located near the hotel of the same name. On the map, this is Natien Beach, the eastern part. The beach is very beautiful, but not swimmable. Very shallow and rocks in the water. But what soft sand and magnificent views! There is a kai station on the beach. Aquarium and tiger zoo nearby. The perfect place for kitesurfing. In general, I really like this beach 😎

the islands - Laem Set, Bang Kao, Thong Krut - are sparsely populated, a lot of natural debris and not suitable for swimming: shallow, a lot of stones in the water. Beautiful nature and desertedness are the main pluses of this place.

We follow further to the west of Koh Samui and get to the beach - a magnificent beach for a quiet, relaxing and romantic getaway. There are almost no people, the hotels are located far from each other. Entertainment, shops too. Incomparable nature, palm trees, but there is a minus - a shallow sea. You don't have to go far to buy. Since this beach is located in the west of Koh Samui, you can watch amazing sunsets here. I would live on this beach in retirement, in a good expensive hotel 😎

The next beach to the west, immediately after the cape with a naval base, is the beach or Tong Yang. A long beach with white, fine sand, magnificent scenery, palm trees and a few hotels. Quiet, calm, but also a problem - the sea is shallow ... I would choose this beach for living with children. Nearby in 10-15 minutes drive - Nathon, where there are many shops and other necessary infrastructure. Beautiful sunsets on Lipa Noi Beach.

Beach - this beach is located in the north of Koh Samui and is very popular with Russian winterers with children. I do not argue - the beach itself is very beautiful. You can find a place in the shade under a palm tree and in the sun. Swimming is comfortable - there are no stones in the sea and almost immediately deep. The sand is coarse and yellow. Waves are rare in winter. It often happened like this: there is a storm on Chaweng and Lamai - you can’t swim, but there are no waves on Maenam Beach. There are many houses for rent in the beach area. long term. But I don’t know why, I didn’t like the area very much. In the evening, silence, emptiness. There is nowhere to go, there is no walking street with shops or restaurants. Prices are higher than in Lamai. A big plus is that there are two markets: morning and evening. In the morning market prices are very low. The beach is ideal for families with children who go to bed at 9-10 o'clock. In this area, several rivers flow into the sea, so there are a lot of mosquitoes.

The beach is a continuation of Maenam beach. The beach is located on a cape and belongs to an expensive hotel, but anyone can come and swim on it. The beach is ideal for photo shoots on Koh Samui. Beach W is very clean, the sand here is large and yellow, the right bay is deep and suitable for comfortable swimming, there are few people.

The beach - I liked it much more than Maenam beach. The coastline itself is very similar to Maenamskaya: coarse yellow sand, palm trees near the water, deep sea. But the area is much nicer - there are many restaurants, bars, where to walk in the evening - there is even something like a promenade along the sea, which is very rare for Koh Samui 😎 On Fridays - famous. Lots of expensive hotels. Prices for everything in the Bophut beach area are quite high. We were struck by the prices in the market - very expensive fruits, so we went to the market on Maenam Beach. Very close to Big C supermarket.

The beach, or as it is also called Big Buddha beach (due to the location of the Big Buddha statue near it) - is located in the northeast of the island in the same bay as Bophut beach. There are several piers on the beach from which you can get to Koh Phangan. It is better to swim and relax in the middle part of the beach, the sea here is immediately deep, the sand is quite fine. Bang Rak has many nice cafes, the famous fish market, Tesco Express. Bang Rak is a good place to live or spend the winter on Koh Samui.

Beach - a small beach in the northeast is located in the bay of the same name, in which there are only two hotels and a few villas. There are no shops, you can eat in the restaurant at the hotel. The sand on this beach is fine, the water is clear, there are not many people. The minus of the beach is that there is almost no shade and therefore it is very hot. You can go swimming several times if you live somewhere nearby 😎

The beach is located in the northeast of the island, not far from Chaweng beach. Choeng Mon Beach is very popular with families with children. Fine white sand on the beach, shallow sea, not a large picturesque island nearby. There is all the necessary infrastructure - shops, restaurants and Chaweng beach is not far away. The only negative is that in January there were a lot of people on the beach. Like in the Crimea in the summer! And in summer the whole beach was full of yachts.

The beaches of Koh Samui: conclusions

So, let's summarize the beaches of Koh Samui: there are no perfect beaches, everywhere there are pros and cons 😎 The way the beach looks depends very much on the season, the presence of storms and the sun. Everything in sunny weather Koh Samui beaches beautiful, but in the rain they look dull. From November to February, Chaweng, Chaweng Noi, Coral Cove and Lamai have quite strong waves. In summer, all the beaches are calm.

For a long stay, I would choose the beach Lamai, if I had not found a house on Lamai, then the beach Bophut or as a last resort Bang Rak. If you live for more than a year, then you can rent a house quite cheaply in Nathon while bathe ride on Lipa Noi.

For swimming and relaxing, three beaches are ideal for me: Chaweng Noi, ban thai,Coral Cove.

For contemplation - the beach near the hotel and Taling Ngam.

If I went to Koh Samui on vacation for a couple of weeks, I would stop either on the beach Chaweng Noi or on the beach Lamai.

In general, come to Koh Samui and make up your mind about all the beaches of the island 😎

Koh Samui for wintering or remote work for me personally it’s just perfect option- if we talk only about Thailand and compare with Phuket, Pattaya or the North of Thailand. Serenity and relaxation reign here, but at the same time, if you find one, you can quite actively freelance (work remotely). Recently, I have been coming to Koh Samui to live for a couple of months, when I have a lot of work and I want to plunge into a calm and pleasant atmosphere and do everything in one fell swoop.

It’s cozy on Koh Samui, there can’t be a tsunami, there is a sea, a bike for rent and tasty food What else do you need for life? There are noisy parties, shops, bars with nightlife, but there is a real quiet places and houses right on the seashore or in the jungle, where lovers of silence live and where I lived for some time.

On Koh Samui you can buy everything you need for life (well, or almost everything that you can read that is not on Koh Samui). There are three big supermarkets, markets, cafes and plenty everywhere. In general, in terms of civilization, everything is OK here, although the island is more like a large tropical village. And if your choice is leaning in favor of Koh Samui, then let's puzzle you with one more choice - from which area you will actually be.

Large supermarkets where you can buy food and clothes are located on the beaches of Chaweng and Lamai. All night parties - in the same place. Calm family life— Maenam, Bang Po. Something between tranquility and society - Choeng Mon. And solitude for a very long stay - the entire South of the island and Lipa Noi. Farther - more about each beach on Koh Samui.

(Large map of Koh Samui is at the end of the post)

Chaweng

Chaweng- the most party place on Koh Samui. At the same time, if you try, you can find here a quiet house for life, as well as a huge number of noisy hotels, spas, restaurants, markets, shops. Chaweng is a place where life boils - day and night. Nightlife centers: Green Mango, Ark Bar, Sound Club. Although these points are very approximate, written from the words of acquaintances, since I myself understand secret places much better than those where so many people gather.

  • Chaweng is not very favorite of my Samui international hospital.
  • Right there are my most necessary places for life - this is Tesco with a food court that sells the best freshly squeezed juices and Starbucks next to Big C.
  • When I live in the Big C area, everything I need for life is very close to me personally.

Chaweng has an excellent beach, about 7 km long. In bad weather there is a strong wave, and in the high season a huge number of people.

Lamai

Lamai- deep, sometimes rocky beaches. In bad weather, there is a very high and beautiful wave (I don’t compare it with Bali, there is no surfing on Koh Samui, but you can find windsurfing). There are a lot of hotels, bungalows, restaurants on Lamai. This is the second most active party place.

  • Many Russians and other expats live on Lamai. There are a lot of houses for long stay both on the coast and in the jungle.
  • There are many yogis and vegetarian restaurants on Lamai.
  • During heavy rains and floods in this area, everything is not so bad and even probably better than in other areas. Although it was worse during the 2011 flood, the infrastructure here seems to be improving.
  • For some reason, the weather on Lamai is better than in the northern part of the island. It was noticed personally by me, but many times it turned out that I leave the north under a downpour that lasts several hours, I arrive at Lamai, and it is dry there.
  • Tesco on Lamai sells the most delicious (in my opinion) tom yum on Koh Samui. And in general, the “glutton yard” is very good here :)

Lipa Noi beach on Koh Samui

Lipa Noi- a beach in the west of the island. It is located just north of Nathon. Here the most calm sea and beautiful sunsets (the beach is in the west). On Lipa Noi there are few houses for long stays, hotels and expensive villas. A small number of restaurants and cafes, not too active party life, the main supermarkets are far away - half an hour or more by bike / car. In general, a calm beach, suitable for a short vacation on Koh Samui and for lovers of a calm and shallow sea.

*In summer, the sea on Lipa Noi becomes very shallow, you may have to go to other beaches for swimming.

Nathon beach

Nathon is the administrative center of Koh Samui. There is a pier, bus station, market, banks. About 15 years ago, it was possible to change currency or cash out money only here (now in any district). And 40 years ago, children from all over Koh Samui came here to school and lived at the school all week, leaving home for the weekend, because at that time there was not only electricity on Koh Samui, but also no transport except bicycles and boats.

Now there are many cheap hotels on Nathon, the cheapest clothing market and an inexpensive evening market for Thai food. it a good place for those who came to Koh Samui for a long time and did not book accommodation in advance. In this case, you can stay in an inexpensive hotel right near the pier and explore the island on your own by renting a bike here on Nathon, a car or traveling by motorcycle taxi or tuk-tuk. * Taxi on Koh Samui very expensive.

The beach on Nathon is mostly not bathable, but rather working, with the exception of a small piece of beach (with wonderful white sand!) In the far left corner, if you are facing the sea.

In summer it is very shallow and there are often shallows of 50-100 meters.

In the evenings, fishing boats come to the piers of Nathon and you can buy seafood "first hand" - the freshest and cheapest. In the evening on Nathon, right next to the pier, there is a market where you can try inexpensive and delicious Thai food.

Bang Por Beach

Bang Por area is located 10 minutes drive from Nathon, in the northwest of the island. This is one of the quietest areas, where there are many houses for long stays right on the seashore. The sea on Bang Por is shallow, but you can swim - it becomes deeper in winter, very shallow in the summer months.

From March until the end of summer, when the tides are very strong and the corals are exposed, it is interesting to swim here on a koyak. Under the water you can see corals, algae and colorful fish. For sailing this time of year on Bang Por very petty.

Since April, there are very beautiful sunsets and sunrises - the sun sets within sight "into the water" and rises within sight along the water line.)

Bang Po is my favorite area. Quite a lot of Russians and Europeans live here, but it seems that all of them are not very avid party-goers and, in general, there is real peace and tranquility. Chaweng with the main party places and supermarkets is 30 minutes away by bike.

Bang Por has many inexpensive Thai food cafes and restaurants on the beach. There are cheap rooms and bungalows within 500 baht per day.

During the flood, Bang Por turned out to be one of the most favorable areas. We were pretty dry and had no power outages.

Maenam

Maenam located on the north coast Koh Samui. The length of the beach is 5 km. In this district very many houses both on the coastline and towards the jungle from the ring road, which can be rented for long stays. There are cheap hotels. Nice beach. On Thursdays, “Walking street” takes place here - when one of the streets turns into a big market with very cheap clothes and food.

Maenam beach can be said to be excellent - deeper than on Bang Por, sometimes clean and moderately calm.

During the flood there were many flooded places. The most difficult (flooded) sections on the ring road were on Maenam.

Bophut

Bophut- a beach in the north of Koh Samui. Between Maenam and Choeng Mon (the northernmost part of the island). The length of the beach is 2 km. Good, deep sea, not too many people. In the Bophut area there are cheap houses for a long stay, but many of them are not within walking distance from the sea (it takes 5-10 minutes to ride a bike). Behind the eastern part of Bophut is fisherman village- a very colorful place, with inexpensive hotels, excellent restaurants and a market. The market is not cheap, but you can find a lot of interesting gizmos here.

Choeng Mon

Chong Mon- This is a small beach, only about a kilometer. The area itself is quite large, with many houses and villas of different price categories. A Thai-style house in a "Thai" village can be found from 7,000 baht per month. Closer to the sea are villas from 30-60 thousand baht per month. In some places you can find small and not very expensive houses right on the beach.

Choeng Mon is a suitable place for those who come to Koh Samui for a long time, love an active party life and the opportunity to retire to their home in between parties. All party places are located near Choeng Mon, but you have to go to them by bike (10-25 minutes).

Hua Thanon and the entire South of Koh Samui

Hua Thanon and the south coast of Koh Samui to Lipa Noi is a quiet area with a huge number of houses for long stays.

For beach holiday this is not a very suitable place - it is rather shallow here, and in summer there are strong low tides and a lot of fishermen, but there are very beautiful beaches on the territory of hotels and not only. Very advanced foreign centenarians live in these places - in inexpensive houses and quiet seclusion.

Hua Thanon has a Muslim community village and a mosque. The inhabitants of the Muslim village are mainly engaged in fishing and in the evenings you can buy cheap fresh seafood here.

About sunrises and sunsets on Koh Samui

The most beautiful sunsets on Koh Samui are Nathon and Lipa Noi, in some places Bang Por, Maenam and Choeng Mon. Sunrises - on Chaweng, Lamai, some places in Choeng Mon.

In this picture you can see where the sun rises on koh samui and where it sits and, looking at the map, figure out on which beaches (Bang Por, Maenama, Choeng Mona) you can watch both sunrises and sunsets, or one thing.

From some beaches of Bang Por and Maenam, you can watch the sun rise and set. This is most likely in June, least of all in December, when the points of sunrise and sunset are the farthest from each other.

Hotels on Koh Samui

I hope now you more or less imagine which area of Koh Samui to choose for life. Any blogger reviews about specific hotels quickly become outdated - hotels wear out and others appear, so choosing and booking a hotel on Koh Samui is, of course, best of all through the Internet and a hotel search engine.

Today, I use to search for hotels, which has options for all the search engines we know at once (Booking, Agoda, etc.) - you can see discount promotions, compare prices and choose the most profitable options.

If you have come to Koh Samui for the winter and are looking for accommodation, you can see the one I personally compiled, where there are more than 80 houses with a map and photos.

Main beaches

Bang Po Beach

Bang Por will appeal to those who do not like the depth and crowded family Maenam. The beach is located in the north of Koh Samui, next to Maenam. The building density of the coast is high, there is a lot of housing for rent, well-developed infrastructure and the ring road is not far away. Bang Po is smaller than Maenam, but the sea here is unclear, the bottom is muddy, closer to the edges of the beach, stone placers begin at the bottom. The beach is suitable for swimming, especially with small children, but it is not particularly beautiful. Not crowded, not replete with beach activities, with coarse yellow sand and many restaurants on the coast. More , with photos.

Ban Thai Beach

Ban Tai is a famous place among the moms of Koh Samui. The second name of the beach is Mimosa, after the name of the hotel and restaurant located on the shore. The beach stands on the outskirts, does not suffer from crowds, has only one hundred-meter clean entrance to the water. Basically, the entire sea along Ban Tai is overgrown with algae, and the west of the beach is littered with huge stones. Lots of natural shade, shallow sea, few buildings on the shore. There are no noisy parties, beach vendors and drunken youth. All these characteristics together make for an excellent family beach in the north of Koh Samui. More , with photos.

Mae Nam Beach

The third most popular beach on Koh Samui, after Chaweng and Lamai. The main characteristic of the beach is family. Things are very good here with self-rental housing, houses for every taste and price tag. Excellent infrastructure, but no nightlife. After sunset, the entire area falls asleep, except for the bars. The beach is wonderful, almost all hidden under a continuous palm grove. The sand is yellow, loose, very soft. The depth of the sea allows you to swim despite the low tides, there are few beach vendors, there are no active party places, there are no beach activities. More , with photos.

The beach of the hotel W-Retreat Koh Samui (W-Retreat Koh Samui Beach)

The closed beach of the cool W-Retreat Koh Samui hotel with rooms, the price tag for which starts from 90,000 baht per day. The beach is perfectly licked, equipped with all the amenities that are intended only for hotel guests. There are many sources of shade on the shore, the same palm grove grows here as on Maenam. The highlight of the beach is the sandy spit, which goes a couple of hundred meters into the sea, allowing you to take amazing photos. Sometimes the spit deteriorates after strong waves and becomes not so straight. Despite the closeness and exclusivity, the access of outsiders to the beach is not prohibited. More , with photos.

Bo Phut Beach

Bo Phut is located in the north of Koh Samui, next to the family Maenam. The beach runs along the ring road at a sufficient distance. The gap between the road and the sea is built up with hotels, access to the beach is possible only through the territory of one of the resorts or on the waterfront of Fisherman Village. Excellent infrastructure and beach activities. Very crowded and popular due to its good location. Nearby are Macro and Big C hypermarkets. The beach itself is not uniform along its entire length. There are wild, unkempt areas with fishing boats in the west, there is a busy, well-maintained central part and a deserted eastern one. The sea is suitable for swimming only in the central part of Bo Phut. More , with photos.

Bang Rak Beach

Bang Rak is located in the north of Koh Samui, in one of the most densely populated and lively areas of the island. The high density of development on the coast limits access to the sea. Basically, there are restaurants, commercial organizations, two piers, resorts and bars. Well-developed infrastructure and beach activities on the beach. Nearby is the airport and the ring road. The beach is U-shaped and the sea is shallow and rocky at the edges of the beach. In the middle of Bang Rak, the sea is deep, but the proximity to the piers affects. You can observe both oil stains and debris in the water. In winter, there are high waves and very muddy water. More , with photos.

Play Laem Beach

Play Lam will appeal to those who do not aspire to a beach holiday in the classical sense. The shore of the beach is not crowded, located in the north of the island. Basically, there are poor resorts, industrial building and fishing houses. The bottom of the sea is covered with silt and small stones, not at all suitable for swimming. The coast is mostly dirty, not cleaned, and the beach is not popular with tourists. There is almost no entertainment, houses are rarely built, but there is a choice. The infrastructure of the area is below average, there are only the most necessary services such as equipment rental and laundries. The main attractions of the island and the airport are very close. Samrong Beach

Samrong is hidden behind the walls of the only hotel on the coast in the north of Koh Samui. Access to the beach is not restricted by the hotel administration. Of particular interest is not, especially if you live elsewhere. The beach is shallow, covered with algae and rocks. No entertainment, no people, no beach equipment, you can come here just out of curiosity. The infrastructure of the area is poor, as this part of the island is located on the outskirts and is occupied mainly by expensive villas and hotels. More , with photos.

Samrong Beach - Samrong Beach

Thongson Beach

Another children's beach on Koh Samui. The shallow water, combined with the easy accessibility and relative liveliness of the beach, makes it attractive for families. The sea here is shallow, in some places there are paddling pools in the stones, after low tide. You need to move very carefully over the stones, under wet feet a dry stone becomes slippery. The entrance to the water is sometimes complicated by coral debris and algae. Behind the stone cliff to the right of the entrance to the beach there is a hidden cove where you can sunbathe nude. The building is not dense, the infrastructure is undeveloped. More , with photos.

Thong Son Beach - Thong Son Beach

Thongsai Beach

The private beach of the Thong Sai Bay Hotel, which is fairly easy to get to. Like Samrong Beach, Thongsai is a perfectly groomed strip of coastline. The sea in this place is very deep, at low tides it remains unchanged. Not suitable for independent visits, as they do not allow using hotel equipment, and there is nothing to do here without an umbrella - there is no shade anywhere. Very wide beach, about 40 -50 meters. No entertainment, beach vendors and infrastructure. Only a hotel with its own beach. More , with photos.

Thongsai Beach - Thongsai Beach

Despite the fact that the beach is on the outskirts and is closed by the hotel, lovers of coral sand and azure sea they still come with their rugs and umbrellas. Lamai Beach, North (Lamai Beach)

Lamai is the most popular beach on Koh Samui after Chaweng. It has an impressive length, so the description of Lamai is divided into three parts. The northern part of Lamai is located near the ring road of the island, has dense buildings and population. However, here for the most part there are commercial organizations, one large hotel, and several small ones. The north of Lamai is on the outskirts of this huge village, so there is no nightlife in the evening. The beach is located relatively close to the ring road. Very poor infrastructure, all purchases have to be made on Lamai. The sea is shallow, the bottom is rocky. Thong Krut Beach

Thong Krut, like all the beaches of the south of Koh Samui, has one big drawback for those who like to swim in the sea. Shallowness. The sea recedes almost half a kilometer at low tide, leaving a rocky bottom. It takes about an hour to drive to the nearest centers of island life. Thong Krut is the farthest corner of the island, only Thong Tanot is farther than it. There is no infrastructure, there are few houses, there are also few tourists. The beaches are deserted, dirty, wild. From here it is convenient to hire a boat with a boatman to ride to the southern satellite islands and swim on an even more uninhabited coast. The sand is very white, but everything is littered with stones and pebbles, marine debris and teeming with marine life. There is a small area in the east of Bang Kao sandy beach, opposite the only resort. The rest of the space is unsuitable for swimming or sunbathing.
