What paint is better to paint paper wallpaper. How to paint paper wallpaper

No matter how high-quality the selected and pasted wallpapers are, sooner or later their color can fade, and the pattern can just get boring. At this point, the question arises - is it possible to paint ordinary wallpaper with paint? The answer depends solely on the type of specific roll materials.

It is advisable to paint only those coatings that are not damaged and fit snugly against the wall surface.

An important point when painting wallpaper is the choice of the appropriate paint. Let us consider in more detail the types of coloring compositions suitable for application to rolled materials.

On the market building materials There is a fairly wide range of paints that differ in composition and scope. When choosing the right paint, pay attention to its properties.

  • Environmental friendliness - harmlessness to humans and animals due to the absence of toxic elements.
  • Resistance to mechanical stress- resistance of the applied composition to cracks and shedding during impacts and cleaning.
  • Light resistance– long-term preservation of color under the action of sunlight.
  • Moisture resistance - resistance to the destructive effects of liquids, the ability to wash painted surfaces.
  • Drying time.

Alkyd paint forms a protective film on the surface of the wallpaper, which allows you to wash the materials with various means without damaging their structure. This film does not allow the wallpaper to "breathe", smoothes their relief, so the coloring composition can only be applied to smooth canvases. Such paints contain antifungal additives. Average term their service is five years, they are best suited for glass.

Alkyd paints contain toxic oils and resins, so it is better to use them in non-residential premises. In addition, such paints are flammable.

To water-dispersion compositions include water-based paint. Distinctive qualities of such paint - environmental friendliness, no smell, quick drying. The protective film of water-based paint is resistant to mechanical stress, protects the wallpaper from damage. It allows air to pass through, which prevents the formation of fungus and mold under pasted wallpaper.

Water-based compositions can be used to paint rooms with high humidity, as the paint has a high moisture resistance.

Water-based paints, depending on the composition, are divided into the following types.

  1. Latex - strengthen the surface of the wallpaper, which does not allow them to peel off and get wet during painting. Extend the life of roll materials, allow them to be cleaned detergents. Any type of canvas can be painted with latex compositions.
  2. Acrylic latex based- the most numerous group of water-based compositions. Such paints protect the surface of the wallpaper from corrosion, well convey the relief and texture of materials. Apply them in several layers, this will provide a high-quality and elastic coating.
  3. Acrylic water based- characterized by the absence bad smell and fast drying. They allow the materials under the wallpaper to "breathe", which prevents the formation of steam in the room. Suitable for non-woven wallpaper.
  4. Water emulsion- the most economical option among all coloring compositions. They are afraid of moisture and have a poor choice of colors. It is possible to paint paper canvases with them only after pre-treatment of the walls with a PVA base. Most successfully combined with non-woven vinyl wallpaper.

An important quality of any paint is the degree of its gloss. This indicator not only affects the appearance of the room, but also characterizes the water-repellent properties of the painted wallpaper.

The lower the degree of gloss of the protective film of paint, the faster moisture will be absorbed into the rolled materials.

According to the degree of gloss paints are divided into the following types.

  1. Glossy - emphasizes the imperfections of the walls, so it is rarely used for residential premises. Suitable for dark rooms.
  2. Semi-gloss - has a good reflective ability. You can use it in children's rooms and the kitchen.
  3. Matte - due to the lack of gloss, it masks surface defects, it is used in large rooms.
  4. Semi-matte - a slight gloss smooths out small uneven walls. Organically fits into the sleeping area.
  5. Satin - smooth structure, increased wear resistance and durability allow you to use this paint in any room.

Wallpaper painting technology

Each type of wallpaper implies certain preparatory work before painting. For example, non-woven vinyl foam wallpaper requires two coats of primer. Before treating the wall, wash the work surface with dish detergent to degrease it. It is not recommended to choose oil compositions for painting such wallpapers, they will drain over the vinyl. Use water-based or special acrylic paints.

Advice

To obtain a uniform color of the non-woven fabric, paint it from the outside. If the pattern is sufficiently embossed, then you can paint the wallpaper with a more saturated color from the wrong side. The canvas in this case will absorb the paint, the background of the wallpaper is purchased desired color, and the picture will remain the same shade.

Paper based vinyl roll materials are not suitable for painting. The deep penetrating paints used to paint the wallpaper will allow the paper backing of the wallpaper to soak and peel off both the wall and the vinyl top. Non-woven vinyl canvases will be difficult to paint.

You can paint paper canvases with any coloring composition. However, priming the walls in this case will not be enough; use special water-repellent agents. Most good choice there will be latex paints.

An important accent that affects the quality of coloring is tools. Choose a wool or mohair paint roller. Foam rubber can slip on the surface of the wallpaper and leave a shiny mark after drying. Wool or mohair will allow you to evenly paint the walls, regardless of the relief of the canvas.

  1. Take out the furniture, cover the floor with newspapers or a protective film.
  2. Clean the surface of the walls from dust, dirt, cobwebs with a vacuum cleaner or sponge. Glue the old roll materials in the right places.
  3. Seal baseboards, switches, sockets with masking tape.
  4. On the paper wallpaper or paper-based coatings, apply a water repellent with a roller, use a brush in hard-to-reach places. Wait for the composition to dry completely (preferably at least 24 hours).
  5. Dilute the paint with water, mix until smooth, if required by the instructions on the package.
  6. Evenly, in a thin layer, apply the coloring composition with a roller and brush, starting from the ceiling, so that paint drops do not spoil the already painted part of the wall. Color the hay in parts. To avoid spots and streaks, apply the compound quickly before the painted surface has time to dry.
  7. When the composition is completely dry, apply a second coat of paint (preferably at least 2-4 hours later).

The expediency of coloring faded wallpaper should be judged based on their type and condition. Non-woven materials will safely endure 5-10 stains, while paper-based canvases may not withstand even one, and foamed vinyl will actively resist painting. It is still possible to paint old roll materials. Be responsible with the choice of tools, purchase high-quality paint, do not forget about the primer and water-repellent agents, and everything will certainly work out.

Coloring of wall-paper is carried out only by coloring substances on a water basis. Can be used for work acrylic paints, which do not contain solvents or other harmful components, as well as water-based paints.

When using a water emulsion, you can choose any shade of tinting as you wish. But before you start painting finished walls, you need to practice doing it on a small area, and only after making sure that you are good at it, and the color and properties of the paint meet your requirements, you can get to work.

Many experts recommend the use of latex dispersion paint. It is a safe, environmentally friendly material. But when using it, it must be remembered that after depressurization of the package, its contents dry out after a few hours, it must be immediately diluted with water and applied to the surface. A wall covered with this paint will dry no earlier than three days.

Before use, latex paint is diluted with water. A liter of diluted paint is required per six meters of area. In most cases, it is not required to prime the wallpaper for painting, as long as they are clean and dry.

How to paint: technology

In the production of non-woven wallpaper, cellulose processed according to special technologies. The canvas itself consists of two layers. They are glued to the wall surface with an inner layer consisting of fleselin. The outer layer of this finishing material is made of foamed polyvinyl. Non-woven wallpaper is produced in two types: not requiring painting and for painting.

Wallpaper with a homogeneous structure is usually painted only from the front surface using a brush, roller or spray gun. However, lovers of experiments can paint non-woven fabric and more. original way. With this method, the paint is applied from the wrong side of the canvas immediately before gluing. Due to its hygroscopicity, flesel new layer it will be saturated with color through and through and the paint will come through from the front side. In addition, the base material of the roll itself is well dyed, it is impossible to erase the paint from it, and the water-based dye is easily erased from the polymer layer.

Idea: If the wallpaper is not monochromatic and you want to achieve an original contrasting pattern on it, you can paint only the inner layer, then in places on the wallpaper where there is no top polymer layer, you will see a colored non-woven backing.

Advice: non-woven wallpaper will look more aesthetic if you first apply one layer of paint, and add another layer of a different shade on top of it.

Types of wallpaper for painting and their features

For painting, you can use not only non-woven wallpaper, but also paper and fiberglass. Rolls of different types intended for coloring have their advantages and disadvantages.

  • Embossed texture paper wallpapers are impregnated with water-repellent compounds, allowing them to be painted several times. This is an environmentally friendly and affordable material that is easy to glue and looks spectacular on the ceiling and on the walls. The disadvantage of paper wallpaper for painting can be called sensitivity to mechanical damage. Also, they cannot be washed.
  • Non-woven - easy to glue, well hide the uneven surface of the walls, they can be repainted several times, besides, they can be cleaned with a damp cloth. However, their cost is relatively low.
  • Fiberglass - high strength and durability. They are made from quartz filaments. With such material, it is possible to imitate different textures.

Painted wallpapers absorb sound well, create coziness in the room, and protect walls from damage. We paint the wallpaper ourselves: the right materials and technology
We paint wallpapers on our own: the right materials and technology Now, the method of decorating walls in houses and apartments is quite popular - painting wallpaper. The advantages of this method of wall decoration can be

Wallpapering a room is not so difficult, but time-consuming. It is necessary to remove the old coating, put the wall in order - in general, it will take at least three days, or even a week, but I want to get it done quickly. There is a way out! It will take much less time to repair if you cover the walls with paint directly on the paper. How to paint old wallpaper yourself? This will be discussed in our article.

What can be dyed?

The answer to the question of whether it is possible to paint and repaint the wallpaper depends on what exactly the walls are pasted over. You can change the color of the walls in this way if they have:

Important! There are special wallpapers for painting - there are no problems with them, they are intended for this. Non-woven fabric is beautifully painted, while you can paint both the wallpaper itself and the wall under them. Silk plaster can be removed, and with the help of a different dye and various additives, a new color and texture can be obtained, and then the walls can be covered with it again. Many people like this repaint.

There are coatings that do not make sense to paint in the usual way:

In these cases, other technologies are used.

Important! As regards coverage for vinyl backing, then painting them is more difficult than gluing. The easiest way to apply paint on paper.

Is it possible to paint the wallpaper if it is torn?

A very important question: when exactly does it make sense to paint paper wallpapers? paper is enough cheap material, however, it has a number of unpleasant properties:

  • fade;
  • covered with spots that are poorly rubbed;
  • breaks;
  • if the repair is not done very well, it is separated from the walls without your participation.

If the wallpaper is holding up well, but has faded, it can be repainted. As well as in the case when stains appeared on the wall - greasy, from a felt-tip pen, etc.

Important! Do not be afraid that they will appear on the new coating, you will still prime the wall.

Torn wallpapers can also be covered with paint, but it all depends on how serious the damage is. If it's just scratches, cuts, or small shreds that have fallen behind, you can safely go to the store for paint. But if the coating was poorly glued and leaves on its own, it is easier and cheaper to replace it.

What will you need?

Having received a positive answer to the question of whether it is possible to paint ordinary wallpaper with paint, think about what you need for this:

  • actual paint;
  • priming;
  • masking tape;
  • roller;
  • narrow and wide brushes;
  • several meters of polyethylene film.

Primer, masking tape, film:

  • The primer will provide better adhesion of the paint to the surface. In addition, paper tends to absorb moisture, and water, in turn, dissolves the glue. So without a water-repellent primer, all your work will go down the drain - freshly painted sheets will perfectly separate from the wall.
  • Masking tape is needed to protect the baseboard and other parts that should not be dripped. You can buy it at any hardware store.
  • Take care not to stain floors and furniture that cannot be moved out. They must be covered with plastic wrap (for example, for greenhouses).

Brushes and rollers

Why brushes of different widths? Very simple - you will have to paint over both the corners and places near sockets or switches. In a word, you can’t do it with just a wide brush or roller.

You can find on sale several types of rollers with different pile lengths. Which one to choose to paint old wallpaper depends on the quality of the coating on the walls:

  • if they are smooth, the pile should be short;
  • if textured - long.

How to paint paper wallpaper?

It is very important to choose the right paint. The first rule to be followed is that it must be for interior decoration rooms, not facades.

Important! You should not use oil paints for the room - of course, once the rooms were finished exclusively with them, but simply because there were no others.

Surface quality

Now you can see paints on the shelves that give different types surfaces:

Important! Which option to choose depends on the purpose of the room, lighting and size:

  • For a large living room or bedroom with large windows matte walls are more suitable.
  • It is better to paint a small kitchenette with glossy paint - it will appear larger and lighter.

Performance characteristics

When choosing a finishing material to paint old wallpapers, you need to focus on its other coloring qualities:

  • Light resistance. If the paint fades badly, you will have to make a new repair pretty soon. So try to choose one that does not change color too quickly when exposed to sunlight.
  • Resistance to mechanical impact. The less sensitive the coating to mechanical stress, the better. In principle, all interior paints give a durable surface that is quite difficult to scratch, but still do not forget to clarify this issue with a consultant.
  • Transparency. Pay special attention to such a characteristic as transparency. The paint that the walls are already covered with should not show through the new layer, otherwise you risk getting the walls not at all the shade you want.
  • Environmental friendliness. Finishing materials that decorate the interior of apartments or houses should not emit harmful substances. It is desirable that they do not react with the environment at all.
  • Moisture resistance. Moisture resistance is important so that surfaces can be washed without severe consequences for them.
  • Drying time. The time of complete drying depends on how quickly you can make repairs.

Types of paints

Paints that can be used to paint paper wallpapers come in different bases:

Alkyd paints

Alkyd compounds fit well on paper and form a protective film that allows you to wash the walls with any detergent. The undoubted advantages include the fact that the composition always contains antifungal additives and antiseptics.

However, they have several very significant disadvantages that make such paint more suitable for glass wallpaper than for paper:

  • walls do not "breathe";
  • the texture of the wallpaper is lost;
  • serve only about five years;
  • contain toxic substances;
  • are burning.

Important! Alkyd dyes are used mainly for non-residential premises, where, moreover, there is little risk of fire.

Water-based and latex-based paints

Is it possible to paint paper wallpaper with water-based paint? It is possible and even necessary, if you have already decided to take up this activity. The water emulsion, in addition to the low price, has a lot of useful properties:

  • does not smell;
  • dries quickly;
  • does not contain harmful substances, respectively - does not emit them when the coating is destroyed;
  • not sensitive to mechanical stress;
  • passes air;
  • does not react with the environment.

Important! Since water-based paints allow air to pass through, the fungus does not settle on paper. Surfaces finished with such material are easy to clean, and it is usually not necessary to use aggressive detergents.

Types of water-based paints

Water-based paints are of two types:

  • acrylic on a latex basis;
  • water based acrylic.

Both are suitable for finishing residential premises.

Latex

Latex compounds do not allow the paper to get wet and fall off the walls. You can wash them with any detergent. You can paint both smooth and textured surfaces, and the texture is preserved.

Latex-based acrylic paints are the most popular type of finishing materials. They provide excellent protection paper cover from mechanical influences, excellently retain relief.

Aquatic

A lot of positive properties and water-based acrylic paints:

  • do not smell;
  • dry very quickly;
  • pass air;
  • during the work does not form smudges.

What to give preference?

When choosing one or another composition, it is necessary to take into account the type of surface:

  • Water-based acrylic paints are more suitable for non-woven surfaces.
  • For paper, it is better to choose latex.

Important! An important condition for the popularity of these paints is the low price. They do not contain expensive solvents, which makes such materials accessible to most.

In addition, the choice of such paints in stores is quite wide, and if you wish, you can order any suitable shade, or even make it yourself, taking a white emulsion and an appropriate color scheme. This allows you to get original color solutions.

Preparing the wall

Before you paint ordinary wallpaper, you need to tidy up the wall. The procedure is quite common, and perhaps even easier than preparing for sticking new wallpaper:

  1. First of all, remove all the furniture that can be removed from the room.
  2. Move the one that remains away from the walls, cover with plastic wrap.
  3. Remove dust from the wallpaper in any suitable way, best of all - with a vacuum cleaner, but you can also use a soft cloth.
  4. If possible, get rid of stains - they, of course, will go under the paint, but it is better if the surface is as uniform as possible.
  5. Seal the baseboard with masking tape - you can get by with wide tape, but this is not very convenient.
  6. If somewhere pieces of wallpaper have moved away from the walls, glue them or remove them.
  7. If it does not stick very evenly, sand the place with fine sandpaper.

Important! You need to remove not only dust, but also cobwebs, if any.

Primer

After the walls are prepared, you need to apply the primer. This is a fairly simple procedure, familiar to anyone who has ever done repairs. Ingredients may vary.

For painting paper wallpapers, for example, PVA-based primer is suitable. Water-based paint lays down on it just perfectly. The most important thing is to let the wall dry completely. In this case, starting work a little later than planned is much more useful than rushing. You need to wait at least a day.

Important! When applying the primer, the room must be completely closed, it is impossible to ventilate the room until the composition is completely dry.

Cooking paint

Each jar comes with instructions, and it is best to read them carefully. But there are a few general considerations to keep in mind:

  1. The paint must be mixed until the mass becomes homogeneous.
  2. It is best not to add color yourself, but to ask a consultant in a hardware store to do this.

Applying paint

Well, everything is ready, you can proceed to the final stage - directly painting the old wallpaper.

Important! If you don't have a lot of experience with painting, try painting the wall sections where the cabinets and sofa will be first - once you've got everything in place, these pieces won't be noticeable, but you can practice.

But it's better to follow this order:

  1. Start painting from the top, with large horizontal strokes going in the same direction.
  2. Apply the paint evenly, without gaps, in an even layer.
  3. After the entire surface is painted, paint over the corners, areas adjacent to the plinth - it is more convenient to do this with a thin brush.
  4. Wait 3-4 hours.
  5. Apply another layer.

Important! To check how you coped with your task, carefully inspect the wall by holding a bright lamp to it. If the surface is even, without streaks, drops and places where the old coating shows through, everything is in order. If there are defects, paint over them or apply another layer.

Convinced that painting old wallpaper is not only possible, but sometimes very profitable? But remember that painting wallpaper with a pattern is not so easy. Start updating the design of the room you need, because now you know how easy and high-quality it is to do it!

There are different opinions about the advisability of staining old paper wallpaper. Indeed, in some cases, it is not even worth starting this process. If they are poorly glued, have significant damage received during operation, then painting will not replace gluing new ones.

Before proceeding directly to painting old wallpaper, you need to decide on the list of materials and tools that we may need in the process.

For painting glued surfaces you need:

  1. Water-repellent coating that prevents the coating from getting wet, and as a result of its lagging behind the wall;
  2. Dye;
  3. Roller and brushes of different sizes. The length of the pile on the roller depends on the relief of the surface to be painted. If the surface is smooth, then the roller should be with a pile of medium length;
  4. Masking tape, which will be required to seal the baseboards, thereby protecting them from paint ingress.

In more detail, you should consider the choice of paint. They can be: satin, semi-gloss, glossy, semi-matte and matte. The choice depends on the type of surface and the lighting in the room. For example, for a kitchen with smooth surfaces, semi-gloss paint is perfect, it will reflect light well and be easy to clean. And the matte finish will perfectly fit into the interior of large halls.

Also, when choosing a paint, you need to consider such characteristics as:

  1. Resistance to light and mechanical stress;
  2. The ability to overlap other paint so that it does not show through;
  3. Complete drying time;
  4. Possibility of washing;
  5. Environmental friendliness.

According to the basics, paints are divided into:

  1. Paints with alkyd base;
  2. Water or latex;
  3. Acrylic.

Before proceeding directly to staining, you need to carry out preparatory work. To begin with, we remove dirt, dust and cobwebs from the walls with a vacuum cleaner and a sponge. Then you need to seal all the skirting boards with masking tape.

After all this is done, you can proceed to the application of a water-repellent coating. It is better to apply it with a roller, and in hard-to-reach places and corners - with a brush.

After a water-repellent coating has been applied to the surface of the walls, it is necessary to maintain one temperature, avoiding its differences and not creating drafts. Failure to follow these rules will cause the wallpaper to peel off or air bubbles to form under its surface.

After the applied coating is completely dry (about a day), you can proceed to the next step.

The paint must be mixed until a homogeneous mass is obtained. If desired, you can add the selected color to it and mix thoroughly. Before applying, be sure to make sure that the paint is exactly the color that was chosen.

Paint can be applied to the prepared surface. This should be done with a roller, and in the corners with a brush. Paint should be applied in a uniform thin layer.

You should start painting from the walls that are covered with furniture, thereby exercising on them.

It is better to start painting from the ceiling so that paint drops do not spoil the already painted surface.

After the first layer has dried, which will take 3-4 hours, you can apply the second one.

After both layers have been applied and dried, the painting can be considered complete.

But if there is no experience in carrying out painting work, then in order not to experiment with quality, you can invite a team of professional painters who will carry out the work in a matter of days, and the room will shine with new colors.

It happens that the owner of an apartment or house wants to change the appearance of the premises, but he has no desire to start a full-scale renovation. Or the financial situation simply does not allow. How to be?

Alternatively, you can change the color of the paper wallpaper to something more pleasant or to match the style of the new furniture. Painting wallpaper is a fairly simple procedure, because it is quite possible to do it yourself, but before you start painting paper wallpapers, you need to answer a few questions:

  • How well are they glued?
  • Is there damage on the surface?
  • Are there greasy or dirty spots?

If the answer to at least one question is “yes”, then it is worth considering the expediency. It is unlikely that paper wallpapers will last long, so why paint them? This extra costs time and effort. Another thing is when the surface of the paper web is good and the wallpaper will last for many more years.

Wallpaper for painting

Today, such a thing as paper wallpaper for painting does not surprise anyone. They can be freely found in the market or hardware stores. The main difference is the lack of paint on the surface. The factory, as it were, gives the buyer the opportunity to independently choose and apply the color they like on the wallpaper.

Naturally, this version of paper wallpaper is much cheaper, but good paint it "compensates". Such a canvas has 2 advantages: a long service life and the ability to change colors at any request.

Varieties of wallpaper for painting

Wallpaper for painting on paper basis

Among all types, they are the most popular. This is due to the fact that they can be used even on walls with an uneven surface. Most brands produce paper wallpapers consisting of 2 layers, each of which is treated with a special substance that increases the life of the canvas.

Coarse fiber wallpapers are very popular. Their secret lies in the fact that wood chips are placed between the two layers. This combination forms an interesting texture of the surface of the wallpaper without any pattern.

If you use this canvas for gluing a room and ceiling, then after drying, the effect of a seamless pattern will be created. Due to the lack of complex images, the gluing process is extremely simple - no need to select pictures.

Non-woven wallpaper for painting

They are made from a special fiber, which is compressed in the form of segments. This structure is extremely durable and allows you to close various deformations or damage on the walls.

On the one hand, the canvas turns out to be perfectly even, on the other hand, a pattern is applied to it using foamed vinyl. It looks, of course, beautiful, but in practice it is very fragile. The entire relief of the wallpaper can be removed with a fingernail with little or no effort. Painting such a surface significantly increases the strength.

Non-woven wallpaper is quite easy to glue, in fact, like paper, the only difference is that the adhesive base must be applied to the wall.

Glass fiber

The manufacturing process is significantly different from the previous 2. The paper base is combined with fiberglass thread and impregnated with a substance that makes them fire resistant.

You can find canvases with and without drawings, the material allows you to change the surface texture in any direction. They have an original appearance and look very organic on the wall. For gluing, you must use a special glue.

What is needed for painting

The list of the most necessary things for painting paper wallpapers is practically no different from other similar works. The first thing you need to pay attention to is the paint. The quality will depend on it.

You will also need brushes and a roller. To simplify the work, it is better to have these tools in different sizes, especially if the room is irregularly shaped or has a large number of “difficult” places, such as windows, corners, decor elements, etc.

To exclude the possibility of paint getting on the baseboard, you can purchase mounting tape. It will take quite a bit of time to glue the entire perimeter, but this will save you from further laundering the surface of the plinth.

Surface preparation

If possible, then remove all furniture and, in general, everything that can be carried away from the room. Such piles will only interfere, besides, paint can get on them. If it is not possible to take out, then it is necessary to cover everything with plastic wrap. If it is not, then it is worth buying, in the future it will definitely come in handy on the farm.

Important! On new vacuum cleaners, it is possible to set the minimum speed - this must be done.

Despite the outwardly strong wallpaper, this device can capture part of the canvas. On almost all old vacuum cleaners, it is possible to reduce the suction force using a special hole on the handle.

In some situations, there are small areas of wallpaper that have peeled off and you don’t want to re-paste the whole room because of them. In this case, you can either glue this area, or carefully cut it off with scissors.

Paint selection

This stage must be taken very responsibly, because there is a huge variety of colors that are completely different in their characteristics. For example, based on appearance, they are divided into:

  • glossy,
  • semi-gloss,
  • satin,
  • matte,
  • semi-matte.

Basically, you should choose a certain type of paint, based on the illumination of the room and surface. For example, matte paint will look great in large rooms, but semi-gloss can be used for the kitchen. On the one hand, it washes well, which is especially important in conditions of constant cooking, on the other hand, such a surface perfectly reflects light.

What should be considered when choosing paint for paper wallpaper?

  • Will it show through after applying to another?
  • Can it be washed?
  • What is its resistance to light?
  • How long does it take to dry completely?
  • Are there harmful impurities?

Usually such information is written on the label with paint, but if it is not there or if it is difficult to find it, it is better to contact a specialist for advice. For paper wallpapers, water-based paint is usually used, it may differ in the origin of the components.

Professionals prefer to use acrylic paints, due to the fact that they have the most suitable qualities. Of them:

  • set of shades and colors,
  • abrasion resistance,
  • vapor permeability,
  • waterproofing.

With this paint you can paint even in conditions of high humidity. If the budget does not allow, as an option, use a water-based paint with a PVA base. Other types will not work, because for a low price you have to pay with quality.

Some craftsmen use special formulations with latex-based binders. The surface is pleasantly matte with good resistance to moisture. On the other hand, such paint has a weaker resistance to abrasion.

How to paint

The easiest and most convenient option is a paint roller.

Important! You should only purchase a mohair or wool roller.

Foam rubber for painting paper wallpaper is not suitable. This is due to the fact that it periodically slips and, after drying, a shiny, well-marked trace forms in this place.

On the other hand, if the wallpaper has some kind of pattern, then the foam roller will simply be missing in the recesses. Experts recommend using only a special tray as a container for paint. No bucket or jar will replace it.

Paint is poured into the lower compartment, then the roller is well fanned and wiped against the top of the tray. If this is not done, then the paint, instead of getting on the wallpaper, will end up on the floor. In hard-to-reach places, you can use narrow brushes or a brush.

Ideally, you need to apply paint on paper wallpaper in an even layer. If this is done for the first time, then it is better to start from the place that will be covered by furniture. Even if a mistake is made, it will be safely hidden.

If the ceiling is painted before the paper wallpaper, this will prevent streaks on the walls. If they dry out, it will be quite problematic to get rid of them.

In most cases, one coat of paint is not enough. Therefore, before applying the second one, you need to make sure that the first one has dried well. It usually takes at least 4 hours. If after this layer the color of the paper wallpaper is not visible anywhere, then the painting can be completed. If spots are visible somewhere, you can cover the paper wallpaper with another layer.
