Taking into account the variety of modern building and finishing materials, repair, especially the floor, has ceased to be something very complicated and impossible. Now any person can cope with the repair, not even trained and without vast experience in such work.

Before repairing a floor covering, it is extremely important to choose suitable materials, prepare necessary tools and stock up on the desire to do the work yourself.

The OSB floor is easy to install and at the same time budget material with which it is not difficult to update flooring to later proudly present the results to their loved ones.

Structure, advantages and weaknesses of the NSP

Many are interested in getting an answer to the question, what is the OSB?

OSB is oriented strand board, the same as OSB (after all, on English language sounds like "oriented strand board", i.e. structural building material).

This plate is made of several layers of large-sized wood shavings (mainly pine is used), glued together with various resins, as well as synthetic wax, under appropriate pressure and high temperature. Most often there are three of these layers, a little less often - four.

Chips in the outer layers of the plate are located longitudinally, and in the inner layers - in the transverse direction. For the production of OSB, chips are used with a length of 7 to 15 cm and a width ranging from 1 to 1.2 cm.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of OSB?

Every year, the demand for OSB increases more and more, this is evidenced by the statistics of production and sales growth, which once again confirms the following advantages of the material:

  • environmental friendliness (almost 100% wood) is the most important advantage;
  • homogeneity of the structure, which prevents delamination and scattering;
  • ease of processing;
  • resistance to temperature difference and mechanical stress;
  • high strength, which is enhanced by excellent properties of elasticity and flexibility;
  • hygiene;
  • affordable price (much lower than any lumber);
  • aesthetic appearance.

There were no particular shortcomings in this material. The only thing to consider is that the resins in its base are synthetic and may contain some phenol content. Although, recently, manufacturers have been actively solving this issue by switching to the use of formaldehyde-free polymer resins. Such resins are absolutely safe, they can be found labeled "ECO" and "Green".

OSB floor installation guide on logs

Among modern species installation of the floor the most popular and optimal today has become the design of laying the floor along the logs.

The floor of OSB boards on logs is a worthy alternative to a concrete screed. At the same time, it is quite warm, durable, withstands heavy loads, and, most importantly, anyone can really do the OSB floor with their own hands.

Before starting work, it is necessary to determine the material that will serve as a heater under the plates.

The most suitable in this case will be foam (or polystyrene), - this most effective insulation, which is a foamed extruded polystyrene with a homogeneous structure. Penoplex is distinguished by high strength, excellent water resistance, low thermal conductivity, ease and speed of installation.

You can opt for all the usual mineral wool, which has excellent thermal insulation properties, fire resistance and a very long service life.

Preparation of tools and materials for OSB installation

Before starting work on the installation of the OSB, it is necessary to prepare a set of all necessary tools:

  • tape measure (you can also use a folding meter);
  • jigsaw;
  • perforator;
  • level gauge;
  • screwdriver;
  • dowel;
  • wood screws;
  • hammer;
  • a simple pencil (for marking on cutting points).

It is necessary to prepare in advance all consumables:

  • wooden logs (bars);
  • insulation (foam slabs / mineral wool rolls);
  • mounting foam;
  • floor varnish;
  • dry adhesive mixture for insulation;
  • plinth.

Detailed installation instructions for OSB boards

Step 1. Preparing the lag

The first thing to do for the subsequent installation of the OSB floor is to prepare the lag.

Logs (wooden bars) take the following sizes:

  • width - 4 cm;
  • height - 2 cm (or, respectively, the height of the insulation sheet).

Step 2. Installation of logs and "stiffness bars"

Spread dried logs around the perimeter of the room (along the contour) and along the length of the room. The distance between the lags is taken 25 cm or 50 cm (based on the width of the insulation). With the help of dowels, the logs are attached to the concrete base of the floor (the holes for the dowels are prepared with a perforator). It is advisable to place the dowels at a distance of 50 to 60 mm from each other.

Next, wooden planks are cut using an electric jigsaw (they are called “stiffness bars”) to form overlaps between the longitudinal lags. These strips, respectively, are placed perpendicular to the laid bars and must have a length corresponding to the distance between the lags. They are also attached to the concrete base with dowels, placing the latter in a checkerboard pattern.

Step 3. Laying insulation

The next stage of work is the placement of insulation in the cells formed for it. To give additional reliability, the plates are glued to a concrete base.

To do this, take a dry mixture of glue, which is diluted with water to the desired consistency in the prepared container (the exact ratios of the mixture and water and detailed preparation technology are always written on the packaging of the glue by the manufacturer). Stir the mixture with a whisk.

Then glue is applied to the foam sheets with a construction spatula and the insulation is placed in the cell prepared between the lags.

The gap between the walls of the room and the lags is sealed with mounting foam. It is important to let the foam dry, and then carefully cut off the excess with a knife (a wallpaper or clerical knife is suitable).

Step 4 Mounting the OSB

When the floor insulation is completed, they proceed to the next stage - the direct installation of the OSB.

When laying the OSB, it is necessary to make marks on it with a simple pencil in the place where the fastening to the logs will be made.

OSB sheets with the help of wood screws and a screwdriver are attached to the logs according to the marks.

First, whole sheets are laid out, in the center of the floor. OSB before laying along the walls is cut with an electric jigsaw into sections of the required size. Fastening is done with a screwdriver and self-tapping screws.

At this stage, the OSB floor is considered installed.

Step 5. Finishing the OSB floor

After the floor of the OSB boards in the room is completely mounted, proceed to the individual finishing of the floor.

  1. The floor can be covered with a special varnish and a plinth can be fixed around the perimeter of the room.

It should be noted the main advantages of particle boards, due to its high density of glued materials, it has a single frame, therefore it is very popular in application.

For the idea, correction and flooring of the floor with your own hands, no special specialized education is required, it is enough to have the desire and a few construction tools. And starting from a draft, having a simple work skill and keeping a building level, a hacksaw and a hammer at hand, you can easily move towards the intended goal.

Laying OSB on a concrete base

It is important to understand that you will have to work more consciously with the concrete base, because it requires more attention than a wooden floor.

For example, let's take a concrete area that was poorly and unevenly poured, it has waves and roughness.

To level such a floor, you will need to work hard, but it’s really possible to do it yourself with your own hands.

It is important to correct the wooden coating, if one has failed with roughness, by simple grinding with a planer.


Before installing the particle board, you should also ensure a clean surface, remove all metal fasteners, if any.

After finishing the alignment, you should proceed to the next step. The OSB layer, for ease of installation, can be divided into several parts.

Step by step, we lay the sheets on the prepared flat surface, strengthening them with self-tapping screws at intervals of 20-30 cm. We also fill the seams between the sheets with mounting foam.

And now the OSB floor is laid, in conclusion, it is necessary to polish the boundaries between the sheets.

The rough floor is fast, high-quality and inexpensive - this is the combination that most builders and their clients are trying to achieve. The easiest way to form such a floor covering is from OSB boards. Laying technology depends on the type of base and additional requirements for the finished floor.

OSB: composition and characteristics

OSB or OSB is oriented strand board. In transliteration, OSB is often called OSB, but this is not entirely true, as it contradicts the decoding, but is used everywhere.

The boards are a composite of large wood chips and polymer binders. They are formed from several layers located perpendicular to each other. This design ensures the resistance of the sheets to torsional deformations and makes them resistant to tearing and delamination.

According to the production technology, OSB is identical to chipboard, with the difference that the first uses finely planed chips up to 4 mm thick and up to 25 cm long, and the second uses fine sawdust. As a binder, thermosetting resins (urea-formaldehyde, melamine, etc.) are added to the raw materials. Typical sizes of plates:

  • height 2440 mm,
  • width - 1220 mm,
  • thickness - 6-38 mm

OSB is available in 4 varieties:

  • OSB-1 - thin boards used for the production of packaging, furniture blanks, construction of temporary structures, etc.
  • OSB-2 are standard sheets that can be used in dry ventilated areas. Application - for internal rough work (flooring, leveling walls, ceilings, forming household boxes, etc.).
  • OSB-3 is a moisture resistant material containing paraffin additives. Possesses the increased resistance to the increased humidity, it is recommended for application both in rooms, and for external finishing works.

    Withstands high humidity both indoors and outdoors. When used in rooms such as bathrooms, saunas and others, it is recommended to use coating or flooring waterproofing materials.

  • OSB-4 - high density durable boards. This is the material for the formation of load-bearing structures.

It is impossible to say for sure which one is better or worse. It all depends on the destination. Leveling the base for laminate, linoleum, ceramic tiles and other types of finishing materials is carried out with OSB-3 sheets. Their advantages are that they perfectly withstand serious loads (furniture, equipment) even when installed on logs, are resistant to temperature and humidity changes, are easy to process, and installation is possible even for an inexperienced beginner.

In addition to the above advantages, OSB is a heat-insulating material with a slight noise-reducing effect. That's why vinyl and carpet manufacturers so often strongly recommend laying a warm hardwood underlay on a concrete floor first, followed by a fine finish.

The thickness of the boards used depends on the installation method. For a concrete even base with a difference of no more than 2-4 mm for every 2 meters of area, it is reasonable to use panels of 10-12 mm. When laying the floor on the logs with your own hands, the installation of OSB with a cross section of 18 mm or more is justified. Experts recommend laying sheets of 10-12 mm in 2 layers with overlapping seams. It turns out a multi-layered kind of "substrate", which guarantees increased strength and durability of the base.

OSB laying on a wooden floor

We especially note that it is impossible to use a semi-dry cement-sand screed, lay GVL, asbestos-cement slabs and other similar materials on wooden floors.

The fact is that the coefficients of thermal expansion and moisture absorption of these construction funds do not correspond to those of wood. There is a high risk that the base may begin to rot under the leveling layer, mold, etc.

To install OSB on a wooden floor, you will need the following tools:

  • electric planer to remove excessively protruding parts;
  • hammer or screwdriver;
  • electric drill;
  • hydraulic level;
  • nails or wood screws;
  • tape measure and construction pencil;
  • hacksaw or jigsaw;

Of the building materials, you will additionally need a rail to form a log 4x5cm, 3x4 cm, insulation (mineral wool, ecowool, expanded clay) or soundproofing material, as well as antiseptic and putty compounds to fill holes, potholes in the base.

Installation begins with the preparation of a wooden floor. The surface must be carefully inspected, the protruding parts should be cut off, and the pits and other defects should be puttied with quick-drying repair compounds. It can be a special wood putty, blitz cement, or just sawdust mixed with PVA glue.

To protect against mold and bugs, the base must be covered with several layers of fire-retardant impregnation or primer with antiseptic additives. Ideally, you can also varnish it, but this is rarely done. The term of complete drying is at least 3 days.

The next step is the frame. The lags also require protection, so the bars are treated with bioprotective compounds, cut to the size of the room and mounted to the floor with self-tapping screws at a distance of 30-60 cm parallel to each other. Evenness is checked by a hydraulic level; thin dies can be placed to fit under the rails. Heat-insulating or noise-suppressing material is laid in the gaps.

The finishing stage of the subfloor is the fastening of OSB boards to the frame with your own hands using self-tapping screws or nails. Sheets are marked, if necessary, appropriate cutting is carried out, and tightly fixed to the logs.

Be sure to leave thermal compensation gaps between the wall and OSB sheets with a width of 2-5 mm. The distance between adjacent plates is optional.


After completing the work, you need to check the resulting base with a level. If there are bumps at the joints, they can be scraped off with a grinder or just sandpaper. Additionally, for ventilation of the "pie", it is recommended to drill several holes near the walls with a drill.

If you lay OSB on wooden base without lag, then the floor must be sufficiently even, dry and durable. In this case, you can do with only self-tapping screws and a screwdriver, and alignment can be done in a day. The coating will be of proper quality if the materials are fastened to each other not only around the perimeter, but also crosswise over the entire area of ​​the sheet.

Installation of OSB on a concrete floor

A draft floor of oriented strand boards can only be formed on dry, “ripened” concrete with a moisture content of not more than 6%. But even in this case, it is recommended to use a waterproofing film, membrane or coating composition. If you put OSB without this protection, then mold, fungi, and foci of decay may appear on the base from excessive moisture.

For laying sheets with your own hands directly on a concrete base, it is recommended to use panels with a thickness of 10-16 mm. Such alignment is allowed with differences up to 2 mm per 2 m 2. This is enough to make the subfloor warm and even. Installation begins with the laying of a waterproofing substrate. Joints are fixed with adhesive tape. Top applied OSB sheets and fastened tightly with self-tapping screws. There should be a gap of 2-3 mm between the wall and the edge of the subfloor.

If installation is carried out on logs, then bars are first fixed on top of the film, heat or sound insulating material is installed in between, then everything is covered with OSB sheets from above. As a thermal insulator, you can use foam, EPS and other types of insulation.

In order to make a high-quality subfloor on logs or on a base, do not forget to constantly check the work done with a hydraulic level. This will minimize fluctuations and correct errors in time.

OSB is one of the relatively new materials used in construction and finishing works, moreover, OSB has recently become increasingly popular among builders and private developers. OSB is laid on a wooden floor, as well as on concrete bases. If the floor is leveled with OSB on the surface of a concrete screed, then a material should be used whose thickness does not exceed 10 mm, but if the plates are mounted on the base of wooden logs, then more massive products should be used, the thickness of which will determine the step between the reinforced logs. The material for laying on the logs should have a thickness of 15-18 mm, if the distance between them does not exceed 0.5 meters. But if the step between the lags is above 60 cm, then the plates should have a thickness in the range of 22-25 mm. On fig. 1 you can see how the floor should be arranged using OSB boards.

The standard dimensions of products, called OSB, are 2440x1220 mm. The plates are easy to cut, for this you should use a circular saw, but it is better to refuse the use of an electric jigsaw in the process of work, since it does not allow you to get an even cut line, which is especially important for further laying linoleum.

Leveling a concrete floor with OSB

OSB floor leveling allows you to get an excellent base for laying different finishing coatings, among them: linoleum, ceramics, laminate, parquet. In addition to leveling, these products are able to provide sound insulation, which becomes possible due to the multilayer dense structure of the material. OSB boards insulate and waterproof the floor well. If there is a concrete screed as a subfloor, wooden blocks are laid on the latter, acting as floor logs, in addition, wooden logs help to smooth out the errors of the concrete base.

In order to obtain the proper rigidity of the floor and its resistance to deformation, it is preferable to cover the OSB surface with slabs laid in 2 layers.

In addition, each plate should have a slight thickness - within 8-10 mm. In the second row, the slab should be laid on the OSB floor with some offset so that the seams between the rows do not match. The layers of material should be fastened using a special adhesive, which can be replaced with fasteners in the form of spiral or ring nails.

It is possible to cover the concrete surface of the OSB with a slab without its preliminary preparation in the form of laying wooden logs. In order for such technology to have the right to life, concrete screed you should first check for horizontality, using a long rule. If it has no errors, then the OSB stove can be started immediately. In this case, you can level the floor using one layer of material, strengthening the products with dowels and self-tapping screws.

Leveling the surface with OSB boards should be carried out taking into account the arrangement of expansion joints, this is necessary because the products are able to deform during operation, absorbing moisture into the thickness of the wood elements, and then releasing it. Such gaps should be made between the plates, and their width should be approximately equal to 3 mm.

If the floor is leveled using floating technology, then during installation it will be necessary to ensure the distance from the walls to the flooring, which is 10-15 mm. Floating floors during the installation of the material do not imply the implementation of a rigid screed of plates and walls, as well as the base.

Leveling a wooden floor with OSB

In the premises of houses that were built on a flood or column base, the floors, as a rule, are laid on wooden logs made of multilayer boards or timber. Even in this case, it is possible to level the floor with OSB plates, which are used not only as a rough, but also as a finishing floor.

A wooden floor based on a log must be tested for strength before attaching products to it. The OSB subfloor on the logs is arranged along the underside of the log, while the surface that turns out to be facing the soil must be necessarily treated with a protective coating, which can be, for example, bituminous mastic. In the space that was formed by the lags and the draft base, a heat insulator is mounted, the latter is protected from above by a protective material, for example, glassine. Then you can begin to mount the base for the finished floor.

OSB panels, which form the base for the finished floor, are mounted in one or two layers, the latter option involves laying the material perpendicular to each other. The first layer should be mounted with a joint on the logs on the smaller side. The layers between themselves can be strengthened with spiral nails, and to ensure greater strength of the OSB floor surface, the boards are additionally attached with glue. You can connect the plates and logs with self-tapping screws, strengthening them at a distance of 25-30 cm from each other. On fig. 2 you can see how the OSB floor is leveled with slabs, these recommendations will help with independent work.

The slabs should also be mounted on a wooden floor, providing the so-called expansion gaps, which is also the case with concrete bases.

Once the floor leveling with OSB boards is completed, it is necessary to decide whether to use such a base as a surface for laying the finish coating or leave the OSB as the floor finish, which is also often practiced. The strength and evenness of such a base allows you to immediately proceed to further finishing work floor, but this floor can be left unchanged. The plate will only need to be protected from mechanical wear, for which it is recommended to use varnish, which must be applied in several layers to the surface. Before painting, such a wooden floor must be cleaned of debris and dust by wet cleaning, and then dried.

If it is planned to lay linoleum or carpet on the floor after leveling with slabs, then it will be necessary to ensure the transition as even as possible in the place where the joints will form, this applies to all roll materials. For this, it is preferable to use plates that have a minimum allowable thickness. After the OSB floor has been leveled, the gaps formed will need to be processed using an elastic sealant.

If, after leveling the OSB floor with slabs, it is planned to lay ceramic tiles, then it will be necessary to ensure complete immobility and perfect reliability of the base. To do this, it is permissible to use a more frequent location of the log, on which the plates must be reinforced as carefully as possible and with the largest number of fasteners. The best solution will be used during the installation of plates, which are equipped with fasteners of the "thorn-groove" type. When laying tiles, you should use a special adhesive that is designed to work together with wood and ceramic products.

Before leveling the floor with OSB boards, you need to familiarize yourself with the technology, otherwise the work will have to be redone, for example, due to previously unnoticed unevenness of the base. So, the surface of the log can be leveled by planing, and the concrete floor can be leveled by laying wooden chocks. This is true for minor unevenness, as correction with concrete may not give the expected results.

The use of OSB plates guarantees quick and high-quality leveling of surfaces in any room. To carry out the work does not require special skills and tools. If the slabs are laid on logs, then the step between the latter should be 56 cm, this is great for installing all modern types of heat insulator. If you want to save money, then use OSB boards for alignment will be an excellent solution, because they not only have a democratic cost, but can also be used without additional finishing.

Oriented strand board (known abbreviations: OSB, OSB) is a popular building and finishing material, consisting of several layers of pressed wood chips impregnated with polymer resin. The orientation of the chips in the layers is different, which gives the sheets additional strength and reliability of fixing fasteners. One of the most important areas of OSB use is flooring. The flooring on the logs is the most optimal way flooring from OSB due to the convenience of work and the high manufacturability of the process. With this method, to obtain ideal flat surface it is not required to level the base with a cement screed, and the empty space can be filled with insulation, noise and waterproofing. In order to lay slabs with high quality, it is not necessary to have the qualifications of a master and have an expensive tool available. Installation is completely done by hand.

Floor technology

The most common way of laying OSB along the logs is to install the floor on the existing reinforced concrete floor of the apartment. The supporting structure is a wooden beam with a thickness of 6 to 15 cm and a height of 10 to 25 cm. Its dimensions depend on how the laying and joining of the plates is planned in the future. Fastening to the base is carried out using dowels.

With a lag step of 0.5 m, OSB sheets with a thickness of up to 18 mm are used for flooring, and with a step of 0.6 m - 20 mm or more. When arranging the floors on the ground floor, especially when the apartment is located above the basement, it is necessary to provide a waterproofing layer between the reinforced concrete floor and the joists, and the space between wooden beams fill mineral wool. Such a solution will prevent the possibility of moisture penetration into the room and increase the energy efficiency of building structures.

Installation of OSB is carried out with a long side perpendicular to the lags. Docking is carried out in the center of the support bar. The width of the gap between the sheets should be 3 mm, and the distance from the edge of the flooring to the wall should be 12 mm. Self-tapping screws or ordinary nails can be used as fasteners for OSB. Fastening is carried out with a step of 150 mm, with an indentation to the end of the plate of at least 10 mm in order to avoid the formation of chips. The length of the self-tapping screw or nail should exceed the thickness of the OSB by 2-3 times.

Rough coating

The device of a durable subfloor is the most important stage interior housework. Its installation can be carried out with your own hands on pile, columnar or tape types of foundations. Logs are installed in increments of 50-60 cm, as well as when laying out on an existing floor. A distinctive feature of the arrangement of the subfloor is the need for careful protection of the support bars from dampness and moisture.

For this for everything wooden structures and the bottom side of the OSB is applied with bituminous mastic or special protective polymer compounds. To prevent damage to the flooring from moisture released from the indoor air, vapor barrier material should be laid on top of it. The space between the lags is insulated. Mounted OSB are the basis for the top coat.

Finishing

Roll coverings, laminate, tile or parquet can be used as it for the subfloor of OSB boards on logs. In some cases, sheets can simply be painted or varnished. Each option has its own areas of application. The features of the materials are as follows:

1. Linoleum. This type requires careful preparation of the surface on which it is laid. It is necessary to eliminate all irregularities; there should be no level differences at the joints of the plates. Mounting gaps must be filled with sealant and cleaned. Any flaws in OSB can cause mechanical damage to linoleum. Its area of ​​​​use is kitchens, bathrooms, hallways.

2. Carpet, due to the presence of the upper soft layer, is less dependent on the surface of the subfloor. Before laying the roll material, it is enough to make sure that the OSB does not have obvious defects. Carpet is used as a finishing floor covering in living quarters, hallways, offices, workrooms.

3. Laminate, due to its structural details, can be laid on an unprepared plane. Small unevenness and difference in levels are corrected by the presence of a substrate. The laminate is highly durable and is placed in rooms with high traffic: offices, reception rooms, corridors. Suitable for use in bedrooms and common areas.

4. Tiles (both ceramic and polymer) require rigidity and immobility of the subfloor: OSB should not sag under load, as this will cause irreversible deformation and damage to the finish. To this end, the logs are placed in increments of no more than 40 cm, and the thickness of the flooring sheets is taken to be at least 18 mm. Fixing with fasteners is carried out every 100 mm. Installation of tiles on OSB is carried out using a special polymer-based adhesive that works with wood and ceramics. The material is used for floors in bathrooms, showers, kitchens.

5. LKM are used in the event that the owner is satisfied with the OSB floor as a finishing coating. The flooring, which has the texture of wood shavings, after opening with two or three layers of varnish, looks attractive and unusual. This solution is well suited for rooms country house, suburban construction, as well as an urban private cottage. This is the most budgetary and easiest way to do the finishing yourself.

When choosing tiles for the floor, the environmental performance of the material should be taken into account. Some of its types can release toxic substances and require very careful finishing. Sheets that are planned to be laid in residential premises must comply with the environmental European standard E1. The most suitable brand for strength characteristics and moisture resistance is OSB-3. Such a floor is not afraid of cleaning with water and withstands the load from furniture and people.

When laying out the log yourself, it is necessary to take into account the standard dimensions of the plates to optimize and reduce waste, the dimensions of 1.22x2.44 m are common. Circular Saw or a jigsaw, and for attaching the flooring to the logs - a screwdriver or drill.

It is possible to ensure reliable docking of the plates with each other using a tongue-and-groove OSB connected according to the tenon-groove scheme. Between the individual sheets of material, gaps of 2-3 mm are left, since with fluctuations in humidity in the room, their geometric dimensions may vary slightly. After graduation installation work seams must be filled with sealant.
