What can you make a hammock from. How to make a hammock with your own hands - master classes with photos

Today it is quite difficult to imagine a full-fledged comfortable summer vacation on a country site without a hammock. Hammocks in the country are very comfortable and practical, you can sunbathe on them, read a book or just take a nap on a fresh vacation. In addition, the original hammock can be made with your own hands, you just need to make a little effort.

Frame hammocks can be prefabricated and stationary. The latter option is more reliable and stable, but the transportation of this product can cause problems. Prefabricated hammocks do not have a high level of reliability, since they are made from more fragile materials, however, such hammocks can be easily disassembled and transported from place to place. Hammocks with a frame can have a variety of shapes and colors.

Hanging hammocks. These models can be considered classical, since for the first time a person began to use them. The positive characteristics include versatility, the presence of a synthetic base that does not allow moisture to pass through. The use of a mosquito net will be especially relevant in the warm evening hours when mosquitoes fly out to hunt.

You can build a hanging hammock for a summer residence with your own hands. To do this, it is enough to find two trees standing next to each other and fix the base on their trunks. Tension elements or a carabiner are used as fasteners. If there are no suitable trees nearby, then poles are used to create a hammock.

Hammock chair. Such a product is in high demand because it has practicality and versatility. The presence of a hammock chair brings additional convenience to a simple stay in the fresh air.

This hammock model can be large, which will especially appeal to people who relax with a group of friends. On a comfortable basis, several people can be accommodated at the same time. Here you can chat, swaying slightly or drink a glass of lemonade. The cost of chair hammocks will be slightly higher than other varieties, especially if such a hammock is equipped with additional fixtures and accessories. It is possible to make a hammock chair with your own hands.

Hammock swings. Such hammocks have a rather unusual design, which makes them an original decoration of any suburban area. The fulcrum for hammocks-chairs can be the same trees, and the seat, the main condition is the possibility of free swaying. Modern models of such hammocks can take the most bizarre forms and have a variety of design designs.

Rules for operating a hammock

As you can see, there are a great many modifications and varieties of hammocks. However, they all require compliance with certain operating rules that can protect you from various negative situations and make your vacation really enjoyable.

Consider these rules:

  • First of all, after installing any hammock, it is necessary to check its stability and reliability of fasteners. The trees or poles on which the entire structure rests should have a diameter of 20 cm or more. The poles are dug into the ground by about 1 m. Do not use a product that sags a lot, as this will only damage the base of the hammock;
  • As for the distances, between the hammock supports it is from 3 m, and the mount from the ground is 1 - 1.5 m;
  • The reliability of the fasteners must be checked in advance. The cables carrying the entire load must have a diameter of at least 8 mm.

Advice! To achieve an even greater level of security, experts recommend using eyelets. There are cases when their use is impossible - it all depends on the specific model of the hammock.

  • The base of the hammock should consist of durable dense fabrics - tarpaulin or camouflage. Don't skimp on fabric as it can protect you from injury if you fall. Matter needs to be replaced every 2 to 3 years;
  • In order to make a do-it-yourself hammock from a mesh, it is best to use cotton threads that do not fray, do not slip and tighten quite tightly.

Hammock decoration

After the hammock has been purchased and installed or built independently, you can take care of decorating it. The design itself is considered a good decoration of a suburban area, but there is no limit to perfection. Often hammocks are decorated with canopies made of transparent or dense fabrics, which perform not only an aesthetic, but also a practical function - they protect from bright sunlight and wind.

To achieve comfortable conditions, the hammock is equipped with additional soft cushions painted in bright colors. Ribbons will also be an excellent decoration that will make the design of the hammock elegant, light and airy.

How to make a hammock with your own hands?

Method number 1

In order to make a hanging hammock with your own hands, it is enough to get strong ropes, reliable fabric of a suitable color and a sewing machine. No special skills are required for this job.

  1. Foundation preparation

The dimensions of the base for a hammock are calculated in accordance with the height of a person, and for an allowance on both sides, another 60 cm should be added to these indicators.

The uneven edges of the fabric are cut off, and places for mounting the drawstring are marked on both narrow sides. To do this, cuts are made 30 cm at a distance of 18 cm from each other.

Materials for a hammock Possible scheme of a hammock Hammock elements

  1. Making a drawstring

The drawstrings are located along the edges of the matter on its narrower sides. This is where the ropes are pulled. Incisions in 2 layers are folded over and stitched with double seams. The ends of the seams are securely fastened.

  1. Creation of eyelets and installation of the rope

Consider how you can weave a hammock with your own hands. The rope must be threaded into ready-made drawstrings, leaving a margin of about 180 cm, it is pulled through the cuts by 1 m. To make a hammock, about 40 m of rope will be required.

Creating loops

The ends of the rope are tied in two on one side, and four loops are pulled out in the middle, which must be wrapped with a rope and brought together. It will take about 10 m of rope to carry out a good winding. Before connecting, the loops are straightened and tied at the top of the bend. As for the transverse winding, it should be carried out only after all the longitudinal loops have been laid, and the rope has been fixed. Longitudinal loops are made from a thinner rope, the length of which will be slightly less than half a meter.

A longitudinal loop is necessary to securely fix the ends of the winding. The winding threads remaining at the end of the work are crossed among themselves and pressed tightly. Further, a rope is pulled through the fixing loop, and then the longitudinal part is wound. When the work with the carrier loop is completed, you should connect the two remaining ends of the rope and wrap them together. After creating two turns, tightly tie the remaining ends of the rope.

  1. Installation

As mentioned earlier, the easiest way to install a hanging hammock is to attach it to two adjacent trees. The main condition is that the fastening must be strong and reliable. In addition, poles dug into the ground, as well as a stand for a do-it-yourself hammock, are an excellent support.

  1. Decor

For a comfortable stay in a hammock, you must use soft, comfortable pillows that you can sew yourself using holofiber, fluff or synthetic winterizer as a filler. It is better if the pillows are painted in a color that contrasts with the color of the hammock itself.

Method number 2

If you are still tormented by the question of how to make a hammock with your own hands, then you can use the second no less accessible way. This will require the following materials:

  • Approximately 2.5 m of durable tarpaulin or other material;
  • 20 eyelets, as well as tools for their installation;
  • 35 m of rope with a diameter of 6 mm;
  • A pair of large metal rings;
  • Drill and drill bit 12 mm;
  • A pair of hardwood beams with a size of 30x50. The length of these products should correspond to the width of the future hammock;
  • Sewing machine.
  1. Foundation preparation

After choosing a suitable fabric, it is necessary to measure and cut off a piece 2.7 m long. In the event that the structure will be located under a canopy, you can not take into account the resistance of the material to getting wet. If the hammock will stand without a roof, then this factor should be taken into account without fail.

The edges of the fabric must be folded and stitched using a sewing machine. The fabric is tucked up by about 6 cm. For more convenient stitching, the wrapped tip is ironed, then it is re-tucked and ironed again.

We fix the spacer on the frame

The length of the bars is measured depending on the width of the hammock. Through holes in the bars must exactly match the location of the eyelets. The thickness of the products must be at least 25 mm, any width can be selected (from 50 to 120 mm). Finished spacers are sanded and varnished.

    Installing a hammock

Initially, hammock slings are mounted, to simplify the process, a special frame is often made, but you can also do without it. To do this, a metal ring is fixed on the hook, and the canvas is laid out on the floor and fixed in place with something heavy.

A spacer is mounted on the frame. Each sling must go through a certain eyelet, then through a hole made in the spacer and a ring, and then the rope is returned back. After the tying is completed, the ends of the rope are tied. If desired, you can braid the metal ring with stroma ends to give the finished product a more attractive look.

Exactly the same manipulations must be carried out with the other end of the hammock. A hammock is hung on any supports suitable for these purposes.

DIY hammock stand

Unfortunately, not in every yard you can find a couple of trees located in a cozy corner, and even at the right distance from each other. The best solution to this problem is to create a hammock stand with your own hands.

This design has many advantages:

  • it is light, mobile and compact, it is easy to carry it to any place in the suburban area;
  • quickly made with your own hands from available materials, the cost of which is much lower than the price of a finished frame for a hammock;
  • it is durable and attractive to look at.

Required materials and tools:

  • wooden bars with a section of 80x80;
  • board with a section of 100x30;
  • studs, nuts, washers for fastening;
  • grinder, circular saw, drill;
  • stain or varnish on wood;
  • hooks for fastening the canvas.

The lower, supporting part of the rack will consist of two longitudinal bars of 3 m each and two crossbars of 1.5 m each. The side part - 2 fastening beams (beam 2 m long) and 2 stops (beam 1.45 m).

hammock frame drawing. Photo

The first step is to make a jib - the side part of the rack, on which the hammock canvas will be attached with hooks. To do this, the beam and the stop are rigidly fastened together and cut off at the bottom so that a sheer, but at the same time stable structure is obtained with a collapse at the upper points of at least 4 m.

The resulting side parts are installed and fixed vertically between two longitudinal bars. Their location should be mirrored relative to each other.

The crossbar consists of 2 pieces of board (1.3 and 1.5 m), which are located one on top of the other to ensure better stability.

At the final stage, the longitudinal bars are fastened to the crossbars at a distance of 60 cm from each edge.

We grind, cover with stain or varnish - and the frame for the hammock with our own hands is ready. It remains only to fix the canvas.

The difference between this frame is the method of manufacturing the jib and the presence of a small handle for comfortable lifting from a lying position.

Thus, making a hammock stand with your own hands is not difficult at all. And it will be doubly pleasant to enjoy the result of the work.

How to make a hammock with your own hands - video

In order to make a hammock with your own hands, it is not necessary to be a specialist in the construction industry, since the video shows the work process and describes it in great detail. Now, in order to enjoy a good rest in the country, you should make only a little effort. Follow the recommendations and instructions - and everything will definitely work out!

You still do not know how to make a hanging hammock chair for your home or garden? Such a resting place can be made from threads, planks, fabric and a gymnastic hoop.

How to make a hanging chair with your own hands from fabric?

Such a swing for relaxation can be made from various materials, from:
  • fabrics;
  • threads;
  • boards;
  • vines;
  • plastic;
  • rattan.
A chair with a rigid frame is made of acrylic, plastic, wicker, metal, rattan.

The second variety of these swings for relaxing is a cocoon chair, it is wicker and has a rigid frame.

A chair with an upholstered base is similar to a hammock, but differs in that the hammock needs to be hung from two sides, and such a chair only from one.

There are several ways that it is quite possible to adopt for the manufacture of this item of recreation at home. The basis of such chairs is the usual hula hoop.

To do this, use:
  • gymnastic metal hoop, 93 cm in diameter;
  • synthetic winterizer;
  • dense linen fabric, for example, jeans - 3 m with a width of 150 cm;
  • cotton fabric - 40 cm;
  • belt tape - 8 m;
  • trouser tape - 3 m;
  • four metal buckles;
  • durable metal ring.
Fold the fabric in half, cut it into two squares with sides of 150 cm. From each cut a circle with a radius of 65 cm.

To make even blanks, fold the squares of fabric in half twice, outline a quarter of a circle, cut it out.

On the one hand, draw a rectangle on one of the circles, as in the diagram. Make a cut in the center of this figure, before reaching the end of the rectangle, cut to the right and left at an angle of 45 °. This is where the straps will be attached.

Make exactly the same cut on the second circle. To strengthen these places, sew here with trouser tape.

Notch the edges of both canvases, cutting out in the form of cloves.

Cut the synthetic winterizer into strips, put them along the edge of the round parts, later the hoop will be located here. Fold the circles of fabric with the wrong side to each other, putting strips of synthetic winterizer inside along the edge. Sew, stepping back from the outer circle to the inner 6 cm.

Insert a hoop, wrap the edges of the canvas, stitch them on the outside. Cut the belt tape into strips 2 meters long.

To prevent the ends of the belt from fraying and unraveling, they must be melted over the flame.

Put buckles on these blanks, adjust the angle of inclination and height of the product with them.

As a result, you will get a comfortable hanging chair, which can be created from available materials. The second option also involves the use of fabric.

To make such a hanging swing, take:
  • nylon threads;
  • carbine;
  • hook;
  • thick fabric.
To make this tutorial easier to understand, take into account that there are 2.54 cm in one inch. Therefore, to make a comfortable hanging chair to the ceiling or to a tree, cut the fabric 115 by 86 cm.

From the same fabric, you need to cut strips 7.5x15 cm in size, you will need 14 pieces. Fold each in half, sew along the edge on the wrong side to get a tape measuring 15 by 3.8 cm.

Now fold these blanks in half along the length, firmly stitch the ends with a cross and around the perimeter. You have a loop 7.5x3.8 cm folded.

Now you need to sew 7 such parts on one and the same number on the other side of the main fabric.

Pass a neon rope folded in half through each such loop. Tie to secure these threads.

Twist the edge of the fabric twice, insert the loops here, sew, making three parallel seams to fix the workpieces well.

See how you need to fix the ropes in order to secure them securely.

Tie the top edges of the ribbons with knots on a strong wooden stick. Fix the structure on the carabiner, then hang it on a secure ceiling mount.

A hanging hammock chair will be very convenient to use when you sew two pillows for it - for sitting and back.

You can quickly make it. For this, a rectangle of dense fabric is also cut out, from the right and left sides you need to tuck it in order to thread a strong rope into the resulting backstage.

It will be enough to put a low pillow here, and the place to rest is ready. It is best to hang such fabric chairs with a wooden plank. You need to drill 4 holes in it along the edges, insert the edges of the ropes and the central thread here. All this is fixed with strong knots.

Chains can be used instead of ropes. To do this, holes are made along the edges of the hammock chair, where metal rings are attached. With the help of carabiners, the chain is fixed in these holes and at the top.

There are designs from other materials, check them out.

Wooden hanging hammock chair

On such a chair it is pleasant to relax in the country in the fresh air. It can be made from euro pallets, thereby solving the problem of their disposal and getting the right thing almost for free.

To make such a hanging hammock, take:

  • boards measuring 600 by 120 mm or from 700 by 150 mm (the thickness of these boards is 10–15 mm);
  • varnish or stain;
  • 10 meters of nylon paracord;
  • drill and drill;
  • sandpaper;
  • electric jigsaw or hacksaw.
If you are making a chair from a pallet, then carefully disassemble it, now remove the nails. Where there are holes left from them, these edges must be sawn off evenly.

Sand each board so that there are no splinters on the surface. Treat these blanks with a stain or varnish designed for outdoor work.

At the edges of each board at a distance of 5 cm, make holes with a drill, put two blanks side by side, weave the cord first diagonally in one direction, then in the other to connect the boards.

In the same way, tying the laces crosswise, connect the other elements of the hammock.

The ropes do not need to be tightened too much so as not to deform the structure. Hammock elements should not overlap each other.

Drill holes in the top board and the second one from the bottom. Here you will thread a strong rope to hang the hammock on a frame made of four boards. That, in turn, must be attached to a rope that is attached to a tree or, for example, to the ceiling of the veranda.

You can make a similar hanging hammock chair out of wood in another way.

To make such a swing, take:
  • wooden boards of a suitable size, 1.5–2 cm thick;
  • self-tapping screws with wide caps;
  • durable nylon cord.
Lay the boards on a flat surface at a distance of 1 cm from each other. Tie them on one side with a snake cord in one direction, then in the opposite direction.

On the wrong side, connect both ends of this cord and fix them with a self-tapping screw. In the same way, braid the boards on the other side.

Fasten a cord to each plank on the reverse side with a self-tapping screw. Tie a rope from the bottom and top of the chair on one side and the other, align the slings, hang your product. This issue needs to be discussed in more detail, since the hanging chair must be securely attached to the ceiling.

Methods for attaching a hanging hammock chair

If you want to hang a chair at home, you need to choose fasteners based on a specific ceiling. If you have a solid concrete ceiling without voids, then to implement your plan, you will need:

  • powerful anchor;
  • metal chain;
  • hook;
  • drill or perforator;
  • concrete drill.
Mark where you will make a hole, drill it with the appropriate tools. Fix the anchor here, hang a hook and a chain on it, the second edge of which is attached to the hanging chair.

You can buy such parts individually or as a kit, which is a kit designed to mount suspension devices.

If there are voids in the ceiling slab, then you must first make holes in it, then fill it with a special compound called a chemical anchor.

A metal anchor is inserted into the filled hole in the desired position. It is necessary to leave it for 2-3 days so that the soft composition completely hardens, only then can a hammock chair be hung.

If the ceiling is reinforced with strong floor beams, a special mount for hanging chairs will hold well on this. As you can see, it is fixed with bolts.

For suspended ceilings, the following design is suitable. The upper part is mounted on a solid concrete ceiling, then it passes through a suspended one. A hook or a ring with a decorative cuff is screwed in here, a hanging hammock chair is attached to the fixture.

Reliable slings can be made from linen or jute rope. You can perfectly fix several ropes with the help of macrame.

This uses a double flat knot. It is created by alternating the weaving of the left and right flat knots.

How to weave a hanging hammock chair with your own hands?

This is one of the easy options. For such a hanging chair, take:
  • four wooden or plastic planks;
  • rope rope;
  • drill;
  • threads.
Two strips should be of a larger diameter, drill holes in them along the edges with a drill. Insert here perpendicularly two strips that are slightly thinner, fix them with fasteners. You can use a metal threaded rod, screw washers here.

On the top bar, dial the required number of threads, bending each in half. Create a canvas using . Here, a checkerboard pattern of flat knots was used. If it’s still difficult for you to master macrame, then sew a rectangle from a reliable fabric, tuck its edges at the top and bottom, stitch with a margin to insert reliable strips here.

If you want to weave a hanging chair using macrame, then at the end of the work, tie the threads to the plank, tie them in knots, cut them off, leaving a fringe.

It remains to thread rope rope slings into the holes made in the transverse planks, after which you can hang the hammock from the ceiling or from a tree.

The second option is more complex, but no less interesting in execution.

Before weaving a hammock, you need to prepare:
  • large steel gymnastic hoop;
  • two small gymnastic rings with a diameter of 17 cm;
  • polyester cord with a diameter of 0.5 cm;
  • hook;
  • scissors.

To make a seat, crochet a large openwork napkin of a suitable diameter with a hook. To do this, first dial 10 air loops, connect them into a ring.
  1. Follow the first row according to the scheme: double crochet, 1 air, then, in the same way.
  2. The second row consists of a double crochet and two air loops, knit to the end of this row as well.
  3. In the third row, you need to alternate a double crochet and 5 air loops.
  4. In the following rows, add two air loops in each.

In the last row, you will need to braid a hoop to create a seat for a hammock chair. If you do not want to or do not know how to crochet, then you can make it with the help of such a braid.

To do this, you need to act in a similar way when you are darning products. First, tie the threads to the hoop horizontally parallel to each other, then vertically, passing them between the newly created ones in a checkerboard pattern.

If you are interested in the macrame technique, using simple knots, you will make a woven mesh for the seat.

To create this you will need:
  • 2 threads 400 cm long;
  • 4 threads of 450 cm;
  • 4 pieces of threads of 550 cm;
  • 8 strands of 600 cm.
Tie 8 threads to the top of the hoop in pairs, two at a time, leaving a distance of 6 cm between them.

Now make two flat corners on each to secure these elements.

On the right and left sides of these central blanks, tie the remaining threads. First, to the left and to the right of them, two each, having a length of 550 cm; then 2 x 450 cm; after that, one at a time, 400 cm long.

Starting from the center, weave a checkerboard pattern, leaving the same distance between the nodes. Thus, fill the entire gymnastic hoop.

See how you need to pull the threads at an angle of 45 degrees to get a similar effect.

Now you can make a suspension for the chair. It will be openwork and beautiful, but the creation of this requires patience.

First of all, cut 20 ropes, each 10 m long. Tie them in the center with a knot to mark the middle. Make 12 flat knots on these blanks.

Turn the work on the reverse side, make another 15 flat knots. This part will be the loop.

For the convenience of weaving a hammock chair, transfer this blank up, hanging it on a carabiner or on a belt.

Make a loop out of this ribbon by making 4 flat knots.

We need to weave the so-called bell. To do this, turn the work sideways towards you, perform a row with flat knots, stepping down from the last row of weaving 4 cm.

The first row of this bell will consist of 10 knots. To create the second one, you need to retreat another 4 cm from this first one. Perform 10 knots in a checkerboard pattern relative to this one. Before you make the third, step back a little lower by 5 cm.

Now you need to braid a small gymnastic leather hoop with threads.

Tie 4 threads to the center of the hoop, and 2 threads along its edges.

Attach the hoop with threads and start weaving the back. To make it gradually expand, start tying the side threads, you will need about 20 pieces.

Continue creating the back for the hammock chair. You can use the pattern shown or your own weaving.

Along the edge of the pattern, make two rows of flat knots or one row of rep knots. When the back is completed, tie it to the hoop first in the middle, and then evenly pulling, attach the side threads.

Here is such a wonderful hammock chair or similar you will succeed.

A hammock is a comfortable place to relax that can decorate any suburban area. The product, invented by the South American Indians, allowed not only to provide a comfortable sleep, but also effectively protect against flying midges and night dampness inherent in this area. Modern people use a hammock mainly for daytime short-term rest in order to relax in the shade of trees, enjoying the rustle of leaves and the singing of birds. There is nothing complicated in making a hammock with your own hands. It is enough just to stock up on the necessary materials, tools and the desire to create an original and functional element of the interior.

A hammock can be not only a wonderful decoration of the site, but a rather useful piece of furniture.

According to psychologists and scientists, a couple of hours of rest in a hammock can replace a full night's sleep.

Deciding to create a product, swaying in which it is pleasant to restore strength after a hard day, each of us would be useful to know a few basic rules:

  • Manufacturing material. Before you make a hammock, you need to consider a variation of its performance and choose the right fabric. To create a durable product, it is advisable to choose camouflage, canvas, tarpaulin, calico or mattress teak. Synthetic materials, despite the fact that they are lighter and no less durable, are not advisable to use for sewing products, since they do not allow the body to breathe.
  • Cords for a wicker hammock. When choosing ropes, it is better to give preference to cotton threads, rather than synthetic ones. It is more convenient to work with cords made of natural threads in the manufacture of products for weaving and tightening knots, as well as to touch during rest.
  • Reliability of fastening of supports. You can place a hammock both between special supports or poles, and between two adjacent trees in the garden. If supports are specially installed for arranging a hammock, then they must be deepened by at least a meter. Among garden trees, the choice should be stopped at those whose trunk diameter is at least 20 cm.
  • Hanging height. The height of the hammock hanging above the ground is 1.5-1.6 meters. The distance between the supports is calculated as follows: 30 cm is added to the length of the product, on average it is 2.75-3 meters. In the absence of the ability to change the distance between the supports, the length of the hammock can be varied by changing the height of the brace, creating a stronger deflection or changing the tension.

It will be convenient to carry the mobile structure around the site and place it in any corner of the garden, thereby changing the scenery.

In order to not be tied to the location of trees in the garden or existing supporting structures when arranging a place to rest, you can make such a frame for any hammock

The most popular hammock designs

In order to better and more clearly show how to make a hammock with your own hands, we suggest considering several design options for this product. This will allow you to make the most successful choice that will suit your preferences and capabilities. There are many options, below are some of them.

Option 1 - Mexican “cocoon” made of fabric

Such a hammock, which looks like a cocoon, is one of the easiest to manufacture and quite convenient to use.

Despite the simplicity of the design of the product, rest in such a hammock allows you to perfectly relax all the muscles.

It is impossible to fall out of the cocoon. But in order to get out of it or change the position of the body, you also need to make some effort. When folded, the product takes up quite a bit of space and weighs no more than 1 kg, making it convenient to take it with you to nature or on a hike.

This version of the hammock is quite simple to manufacture. In order to sew a Mexican hammock, it is necessary to prepare two pieces of dense matter 1.5-3 meters in size and a cord 20 meters long, which can withstand a weight of 150-200 kg, for pulling and hanging the product. Both pieces of fabric are folded together.

Pattern for sewing a standard single Mexican hammock

The cuts are sewn on both sides along the length of the pattern towards each other. The length of the line seam is 2 meters (indicated in green in the figure). As a result, a tunnel with unfinished edges is formed. Pattern sections marked with a yellow line in the drawing are not sewn together. This will make it possible to lay a water-repellent film or a synthetic winterizer soft rug with the inner layer of the product, which will significantly increase the comfort of rest. The narrow side of the product, marked in red, must be tucked 2-3 cm and stitched. The product is ready. It remains only to stretch the cord into the formed tunnel.

The stretched cord must be crossed and tightened at the ends, picking up the fabric. The tightening point is wrapped a couple of times with the same cord and tied in a knot.

To attach the structure to a tree without damaging its bark, it is necessary to put a tube on the hanging rope or put a cloth under it.

For the rest of small children and the elderly, you can improve the product by attaching the narrow side of a rectangular cut made according to the same pattern to wooden sticks

Option 2 - wicker macrame hammock

Known to most of our compatriots, Soviet-era hammocks outwardly resemble a volleyball net.

Such a “bed”, which leaves a checkerboard pattern on the back of a vacationer, has been replaced by more comfortable and aesthetic handmade products.

In order to tie a comfortable and beautiful hammock, you need to learn how to weave several knots of macrame technique. To work, you will need a strong rope or linen cord d = 8mm, as well as two wooden slats of the same size, about 1.5 meters long. To fix the rope in the bars, holes d = 20 mm are drilled at an equidistant distance of 4-5 cm. The ratio of the diameter of the hole to the diameter of the rope should be 1/3, which will allow the rope folded three times to be more tightly fixed.

The length of the cord depends on the selected pattern. The calculation is carried out as follows: the distance from the rail to the rail must be tripled, and then multiplied by the number of holes. So, in order to weave an openwork hammock with your own hands measuring 2.5x0.9m, you will need 150 meters of cord per pattern and 20 meters for attaching the product to the support.

Having learned how to tie such a flat knot, you can make a pretty nice openwork product, the pattern of which will not lose its shape during operation.

The technology of weaving hammock cords is quite simple. Each knot is tied from 4 ropes, the size of the cells is no more than 7 cm.

The finished mesh is passed through the holes on the rails and connected into knots. Structural strength can be given with metal rings

Video master class “how to weave a hammock”

As you can see, if desired, a beautiful hammock is quite easy to do with your own hands.

A country house or cottage is a refuge from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. To escape from the stuffy city - isn't this what we dream of all week, counting the days until the weekend? In modern realities, the dacha has become not so much a place of "agricultural service" as a recreation area. And what is a vacation without a comfortable bed? How nice it is to settle down in a slightly swaying hanging bed with a book in your hands or hide behind a soft blanket and take a nap in the fresh air! Especially if the hammock is made with your own hands and with love.

    wide (with wooden slats, stiffening the edges) or narrow, such as "cocoon". If the former are used mainly as stationary, then the "cocoon" is a great camping bed. Thanks to its design, it “hugs” the sleeping person from all sides, closing it from the wind.

In addition, hammocks can be divided into traditional hanging and frame. Unlike suspended ones, frame ones are attached to a special base and can be installed anywhere.

Choosing a place for construction

For a stationary hammock, it is advisable to choose a dry place, protected from drafts. It is better if it is in the shade - this will avoid overheating in the sun. Traditionally, a hammock is fixed between two trees growing close to each other. You can fix it between any free-standing supports, the main thing is that they are strong and reliable. A convenient place to place a homemade hammock will be a terrace or gazebo. Here you can relax even when it rains.

The hammock is placed at a height of 150–165 cm above the ground.

DIY tools and materials

To make a fabric hammock, you will need:

    two pieces of dense fabric (2 × 0.9 and 2.12 x 0.9 m);

    two narrow fabric strips (0.9 × 0.13 m);

    20 fabric rectangles (0.18 × 0.11 m);

    linen cord (40 m);

    two wooden slats (0.90 m each);

  • sewing machine;

  • pencil;

Tip: if there are no rails, then handles from wooden mops are quite suitable.

How to do: step by step instructions

  1. Apply the first mark with a pencil at a distance of 2.5 cm from the edge. Put the following marks in increments of 8.5 cm. There should be 10 of them in total. Check the accuracy of the markup: the last one, like the first one, should recede from the edge by 2.5 cm. Make the holes such that a double-folded cord can pass freely through them.

    Lath marking is an important step in the manufacture of a hammock, so accuracy is needed here.

  2. Drill holes.

    It is more convenient to drill holes in the rail with a small drill

  3. From the prepared fabric rectangles, make loops: fold the edges by 0.5 cm so that the fabric does not crumble, and sew.

    The folded edge in front of the line should be ironed and basted

  4. Take a fabric measuring 2.12 x 0.9 m.
  5. Fold the narrow edge on each side, first by 1 cm, and then by 5 more. Sew along the bottom edge of the fold.
  6. Place the loops made earlier on both sides according to the markings on the rail: the middle of each loop should coincide with the hole. Attach the loops, laying the stitches crosswise for strength.

    the loop is attached to the canvas crosswise

  7. Fold both pieces of fabric with the right side to each other and stitch both long edges, stepping back about 1 cm. Turn inside out. The resulting fabric is preferably ironed to smooth the seams.
  8. Fold each narrow fabric strip in half with the wrong side out, iron and stitch on three sides, stepping back from the edge of 0.5 cm, leaving one edge unsewn. Turn the ribbons inside out and iron. Wrap the unsewn edges inward, sew.
  9. Sew the finished ribbons along the edges of the fabric near the loops - this will give additional strength to the product. It is necessary to sew tapes around the entire perimeter.

    The tape must first be swept, then the product will turn out to be durable

  10. Connect the canvas and slats with a linen cord.

    The cord is pulled through the holes in the rail, progressively connecting it to the hammock canvas

  11. Make sure that the cord is evenly taut, converging at the suspension point at a distance of 80–90 cm from the rail.

    If the cord is not centered, then the hammock will turn out to be unstable.

  12. Thread the cord into the resulting loops and braid it, including the place where the rope loops fit to the cord.

    The braid of the loop will make it stronger

  13. Hang a hammock and enjoy your holiday!

How to make from ropes: weaving patterns and a step-by-step description

A wicker hammock looks like a cradle. It's so comfortable to lie in!

What you need to create a frame and bed

Based on the size of the mesh fabric 200 cm x 95 cm, we need:

    two slats of 95 cm;

    linen cord (150 m, at least 3-4 mm thick);

  • 2 templates (plywood boards measuring 12 cm x 20 cm and 6.5 cm x 12–20 cm);

  • pencil;

    glue "moment".

Description of preparatory work

  1. Step back 2.5 cm from the edge of the rail, put the first mark. Place subsequent marks in 4.5 cm increments. There should be 20 of them in total, the last one at a distance of 2.5 cm from the edge.
  2. Drill holes. The diameter of the hole should be slightly larger than the diameter of the cord. Make the outer holes a little larger.
  3. Process the second rail in the same way. You have two crossbars.
  4. Cut the cord into 10 pieces of 14 cm each. Fold them in half and pull the fold with a rope. To make it convenient to weave, firmly fix the resulting fold on something. For example, tie a cord to a doorknob or throw it on a hook in the wall.
  5. Measure from two cords of 60 cm and tie fixing knots. They should be larger than the holes on the crossbar. Pass the cords through the center holes of the rail. Re-tie a knot on each cord so that the crossbar does not slip off.
  6. Attach the remaining cords in the same way. The rail should remain parallel to the floor and not warp. So that the cords do not get tangled and do not interfere with the weaving process, you can wind each one on a separate reel (made of cardboard or thin plywood) and fasten it, leaving a length convenient for weaving.
  7. Thread an additional cord 2.2 m long into the extreme holes, they will serve as side straps. Fix them with knots on the crossbar.

Stages of mesh weaving

  1. Starting from the left edge, take two cords and tighten them in a knot, as shown in the picture. The side strap must remain intact.

An ancient Russian proverb can be paraphrased as follows: “prepare a sleigh in winter, and a hammock in summer.” So, of course, no one says, but it is better to prepare in advance for the arrival of spring. If you have a summer cottage, but no hammock, you are missing out on a lot. It's so nice to soak up the warm rays of the sun, listen to the birds singing, stretched out on a hammock and sipping lemonade. In this article we will tell you how to make a hammock with your own hands.

To make a hammock you will need:

  • about 2.5 meters of thick, durable tarpaulin or other fabric
  • about 20 eyelets and a tool for their installation
  • two hardwood beams with a section of 30 × 50 mm, the length of the beams should correspond to the width of the hammock
  • drill and 12mm drill bit
  • about 35 meters of 6mm cotton rope
  • 2 large metal rings
  • sewing machine

How to make a high-quality and reliable hammock with your own hands

Choose your hammock fabric. In our case, a very strong, dense and heavy tarpaulin is used. The length of the segment is about 2.7 meters. If your hammock will hang under a canopy, you can ignore the resistance of the fabric to water. If you are going to hang a hammock in the open air, this point must be taken into account.

Stitch the edges of the canvas. Tuck about 6 cm of fabric from each edge, iron it, and then tuck the folded place again. Iron again and sew on the sewing machine.

The side on which the bend is visible should end up at the bottom of the hammock, it will not be visible. Often, the side edges of the tarpaulin or fabric do not require processing. You need to tuck and sew them only if you want to reduce the width of the hammock.

Mark the mounting locations for the eyelets. In our case, 11 pieces will be installed on each short side of the canvas. Make sure that the distances between the eyelets are the same. Marking is conveniently applied with chalk or a marker.

Cut holes for the eyelets. The holes don't have to be perfectly shaped, the main thing is to guess the size.

Install eyelets.

Before this step, read the instructions for the eyelet installation tool, or watch the video below.

Eyelets have a front and back side, pay attention to this during installation.

Make wooden spacers. These spacers are bars with holes through which the ropes are pulled. Spacers are needed so that the hammock does not fold under your weight.

Cut two pieces of wood that are the same length as the width of the hammock. Drill through holes in the beams so that their position coincides with the position of the eyelets. The thickness of the timber should be at least 25 mm, choose the width at your discretion (within 50-120 mm). Spacers can be sanded and coated with varnish or other finishing composition.

Install hammock straps. For this stage, it is better to make a special frame, which will greatly simplify the process. You can do without a frame. To do this, the metal ring will have to be fixed on a hook, and the hammock cloth will be laid out on the floor and loaded with books or other heavy objects so that it does not move during operation.

Fix the brace to the frame. By changing the distance to the top crossbar of the frame, you can choose the desired length of the lines. Fix the hook with a metal ring in the center of the upper crossbar. Each sling passes through the appropriate grommet, through the hole in the spacer and through the metal ring, and then returns back. The ends of the sling must be securely tied.

If you want the hammock to look presentable, the straps near the metal ring can be woven.

The process is detailed in the video below.

If desired, the lines can be left as is, or collected closer to the ring with a rope.

Repeat the same operation with the second edge of the hammock.

Hang a hammock. To do this, you need to find two suitable supports and screw large screws with hooks into them. Hang the metal rings on the hooks. If the lines are not long enough, you can use chains and carabiners.

The hammock is ready, enjoy the result
