Repair in the apartment comes to an end, it's time to install interior doors. The delivery set consists of a door leaf and racks, from which it will be necessary to assemble the box. Fittings are not included in the delivery set of the interior door and will have to be purchased separately.

Important! Be sure to pay attention not only to the aesthetic properties of the fittings you like, but also to its reliability. Give preference to the best products of well-known manufacturers. This advice is “worn out”, but no less relevant for this. By purchasing a model of a well-known factory, you will receive a guarantee of quality and long service life of the product.

Locking systems are rarely installed on interior doors in an apartment, usually they are limited to latches. Locks with turnkey cylinders are needed to restrict access to the premises for outsiders and they should rather be in offices than in apartments. In the apartment, a lock for a latch is installed only in the bathroom and the bathroom. Such a lock is also called a plumbing lock. The latch, which can be installed on the same bar as the door handle or on an individual rosette, consists of a screw and a slotted washer. The wrapping is installed on the inside of the door and with its help the door is closed. The washer is mounted on the outside and by inserting a coin into the slot, you can open the door in case of an unforeseen situation. Anything can happen, and the person inside the room may not be able to open the door.

What are the latches for interior doors

In the apartment, the latch installed on the interior door is enough to securely fix it in the closed position. There are the following types:

  • Fale with a mechanical tongue. The tongue of the latch has a beveled shape on one side, and when it gets into a special groove, this shape prevents the door from opening arbitrarily. When the tongue enters the striker groove, a clicking sound is heard. You can open the door by turning the handle, which will activate the mechanism, compress the spring and release the tongue. This is the most common type of mechanism, installed on push and turn knobs. Rotary handles have the shape of a ball or oval, less often the shape of a cylinder, and are also called knobs.

  • Door locks. According to the principle of operation, they are similar to locks, only the function of the key in this case is performed by the latch - a special wrapping, which can be located on the same bar with the handle or installed separately at a certain distance. The latch does not allow the door to be opened only with the handle.

    Roller, which are usually installed on doors with spring hinges. When the door closes, the roller enters the hole in the striker and locks the door in the closed position. The latch can be returned to the "open" position without pressing the handle - the door must be pulled with a little effort towards you. Roller latches are ideal for children's rooms. With it, you do not need to call a locksmith from the management company to get to your little mischief-makers.

    Magnetic ones close almost silently (there is no characteristic mechanical click). The magnetic tongue "sticks" to the striker already in the closed position of the door. The advantage of magnetic latches is that they are much easier to install. There is no need to achieve an exact fit of the canvas in the box, the magnetic latch will work even if the canvas has a slight skew. The familiar magnetic latch is produced by everyone, which consists of a magnet and a metal plate. There are also more complex varieties, for example, a latch with a moving magnet that acts as a tongue.

Important! For interior doors, either latches without a latch are used, which hold them in the closed position without locking, or mechanisms with a latch, which can lock the door without the possibility of opening it from the outside (with the exception of plumbing locks). As a rule, latches with a latch are made in the form of a knob-knob. In this case, the latch can be located both on the handle itself and on an individual outlet.

Installing the latch handle

To install the latch we need:

  • Drill with a set of drills for installing the lock (feather drills, crowns for wood, drills for wood).
  • Screwdriver or screwdriver.
  • Medium and narrow chisels. It is very convenient to make a selection under the latch bar with a router, but it is not one of the “mandatory” tools at home.
  • Hammer.
  • Awl.
  • Square and pencil.
  • Carpentry knife.

Latches are installed on the door leaf at a height of 1.0 m. This is due to the fact that manufacturers at this height put a wooden beam into the door structure for rigidity. From the bottom of the door leaf on both sides, the required distance is marked and a line is drawn with a soft pencil using a square. The latch is applied to the canvas and the place for installing the handle is determined. Latches are available in sizes 60 and 70 mm.

Some builders advise starting drilling from the end side of the canvas. Then, when you drill a blade with a 50 mm crown, the chips will fly into the finished hole and will not clog the teeth of the crown.

A hole is drilled with a pen drill to the depth of its blade. Then it is leveled with a conventional drill and chisel to the desired size. A latch bar is applied to the end of the canvas, and a veneer is cut along its perimeter with a sharp carpenter's knife. Then, with a chisel, a sample is made to install the bar so that it is flush with the door leaf.

On the sides, a hole is drilled with a crown for installing the handle.

Important! There is no need to make a through hole; the crown, when exiting from the opposite side, can damage the veneer. It is enough that the edge of the guide drill appears, after that the drill must be turned off and drilling should be continued from the other side.

After both holes are ready, they are carefully leveled with a narrow chisel. Then a latch with a strap is installed. The bar is fixed to the door with small screws. To install the handle, it is disassembled, for which one locking screw is unscrewed, the second is loosened. The handle is replaced, the remaining screw is tightened so that the center pin remains in place during assembly. On the other hand, put on the second handle and tighten the locking screw. Then, with self-tapping screws, the handles are attached to the door leaf and decorative linings are put on.

The work is completed by installing a striker ("return") on the box. To do this, the door leaf is covered, but not completely, and the dimensions of the tongue are transferred to the box with a pencil. Using a square, measure the distance from the edge of the canvas to the center of the latch, then it is also transferred to the box. A hole is drilled in the box for the groove for the tongue, a sample is made to install the striker plate, after which the bar is screwed to the box. For the groove, special plastic pockets are produced.

As a conclusion

Decide which type of latch for an interior door suits you best, and decide who will install it - you or the master you called. However, if you decide to install interior doors yourself, then you will definitely be able to install the latch.

Fall pens: purpose and characteristics

False latch handles differ from other types of door fittings in that they are push and must be equipped with a latch that allows you to fix the canvas in the closed position.

Without door handles, using the door will be very inconvenient, or even impossible: it will not be possible to open it. When choosing door handles, one must carefully approach the study of the differences between models and their features. There are the following types of door handles:

  • brackets (the simplest and most straightforward option; such products have no connection with the locking mechanism and only help open the door);
  • latch handles: distinguish between push products (may also be called latch handles (push); by far the most common variety.

Pressing devices, which are also called fall, are used for installation both in interior and entrance doors of various types (wooden, plastic, metal, profile, right or left opening). The latch latch handle is usually connected to a locking mechanism or latch, so the product is able to guarantee a reliable and tight locking of the door leaf.

False handles have the following advantages and features:

  • ergonomics (this kind of fittings is extremely convenient to use);
  • ease of installation and use (to open the door, just lightly press the handle);
  • reliability and long service life (at least 250 thousand opening-closing cycles, which is ten years of uninterrupted operation).

In the manufacture of latch handles, only high-quality and durable materials are used: Tsamak alloy (zinc, copper, magnesium and aluminum), they are also made from brass and ordinary or stainless steel. Products made of stainless steel are distinguished by a long service life and resistance to external factors.

Filed handles are additionally coated with a special galvanic composition, which increases the resistance to corrosion, and undergo various tests and inspections for compliance with standards. You can buy handles in the following modifications: with a latch, with a key-latch or without a latch. Latch handles are available in different colors, so you can choose a product for the interior of the room: metallic bronze, gold, copper, chrome, nickel (there are also matte color options).

Even a novice in this business can install a file handle: installation instructions, a template, fasteners and a strike plate are attached to the product. The thickness of the door leaf should be approximately 35-45 mm, otherwise the hardware cannot be installed.

The finishing work on the repair of an apartment includes the installation of interior doors, often with a magnetic mechanism. Their kit includes a door leaf and racks from which the box is assembled. Doors mounted between rooms do not include fittings in their kit, so they are purchased separately. A magnetic latch for interior doors is one such element.

Interroom door latch device

This is a simple product with a latch that is built into the handle or installed separately. The device is necessary for a simpler and more convenient opening / closing of the valves, while they are characterized by an attractive appearance. The mechanism ensures the tightness of closing the door leaf. Thus, the room is kept warm, and the noise does not spread to the rest of the room.

The chance of getting hurt is also minimal. For example, due to a draft, a door that is not equipped with a latch can slam shut sharply, hitting the owner. There are several types, the differences between which are in design and working mechanism.

Types of door latches for interior doors

To meet the needs of the buyer, manufacturers offer several options for latches. Below are the most popular latches for interior doors.

Latch with handle

Their other name is pressure. When you press the handle, the latch moves, which securely holds the interior door in the closed position. Due to its wide distribution, such a model can be found both on interior and entrance canvases. Often this variety is supplemented with a locking mechanism.

There are two subspecies of this design:

  • with base-fifth (with point fastening);
  • with an elongated bar that allows you to change the position of the keyhole.

Magnetic Interior Door Latch

A magnetic device with almost silent operation - when closing the door leaf, you will not hear a click, as happens with a file mechanism. The main difference is the easy installation. It is not necessary to carefully fit the interior door to the box, since the magnetic product can work perfectly, even if the canvas has a slight skew.

As for the design, it is quite simple, because it consists of only two elements: a metal plate and a magnetic block. There are also more complex mechanisms of magnetic latches. For example, a locking device has a moving magnet in its design.

Latch for interior doors with lock

Latch latches, unlike magnetic ones, are equipped with a mechanical tongue. The task of the bevelled tongue is to prevent the door from opening accidentally. To do this, it must fall into a groove of a special shape. If everything is correct, a click will be heard. To open such interior doors, it is enough to turn the handle: the mechanism is activated, compresses the spring and releases the tongue.

This design has become widespread, so it can be found on most push and turn knobs. Rotary products are made in the form of a ball or an oval (sometimes a cylinder), and they are called knobs.

The latch itself can be push-button or lever. Its task is to limit functionality on one side of the canvas. Such locks are most often installed on the doors of a bedroom, office or bathroom.

Advantages of latches with a latch:

  • simplicity;
  • easy insertion of a latch into an interior door with your own hands;
  • range.

But, there are also disadvantages. For example, the weak point of a door interior latch with a latch is the latch mechanism itself, which has little resistance to damage.

Silent latch for interior doors

Silent latches make life a little more comfortable for the consumer, especially options with a magnetic base.

  • devices with a tongue and a plastic internal mechanism;
  • magnetic latches.

Both options are progressive when compared to traditional movements, so they are being bought more and more often. Magnetic types are now actively manufactured by the Chinese market, but products with plastic are less common due to their price.

Dimensions of interior door latch

When choosing door hardware (especially magnetic), you should pay attention to its dimensions. The main parameters include:

  • length is of no small importance, especially if the canvas is decorated with glass or other decorative elements;
  • width - should be less than the canvas itself;
  • length and width of the fixing strip (located at the end of the door).

The sizes of a door interroom latch are individual for each product.

How to choose the right interior door latch

There are several points, starting from which you can choose the appropriate mechanism:

  • the latch must be of high quality and reliable (without chips, scratches, with a strong color);
  • if the choice falls on magnetic fittings, then you need to check the magnet itself;
  • it is worth evaluating how convenient it is to hold on to the door handle, since you will have to interact with it every day;
  • door fittings must match the interior and finish;

    Important! The handle is chosen in the same color as the hinges with a lock.

  • the location of the rooms and their functional purpose are taken into account: for neighboring rooms, the same models are often chosen, but if the interior doors are far from each other, then you can think of different options;
  • the degree of load on the handle - if you install flimsy magnetic fittings on a powerful massive door, then it will quickly become unusable;
  • when coming up with original solutions, you should not overdo it, an artsy model will look ridiculous in an apartment with a regular renovation, but a simple one with a magnetic element will suit any interior.

Handles are made from different materials, the choice of the consumer often stops at the following options:

  1. M etal. Such products are the most durable and wear-resistant. When applying different coatings, you can get a new solution in terms of color and texture. The most popular models are made of brass, they combine quality and price. The main disadvantages of metal products are that the surface always remains cold, and budget options quickly lose their attractiveness.
  2. Tree. Best suited for canvases made of similar material (solid or veneered). For their manufacture, wood of different species is used, including valuable. Decorative inserts, inlay or carving can serve as decoration. For kitchens and bathrooms, this solution is not suitable, due to low resistance to high humidity.
  3. Glass. These products will be a wonderful decoration for any interior. But, they are fragile and expensive.
  4. Plastic. Such accessories are the cheapest and short-lived. Install them in rooms such as utility rooms. Among the shortcomings: poor quality, unpresentable appearance.

How to embed a latch in an interior door

The installation order is as follows:

  1. To make it more convenient to work, the canvas is removed from the hinges and fixed on a stand.
  2. Next, markup is applied to the canvas. The optimal height from the bottom of the door is 95 - 100 cm. At the same stage, the installation locations of the handle and latch are marked. To facilitate the work, a template is used (often it comes with a latch).
  3. For the latch, the hole is drilled from the end, and for the handle - from the front side. Experts advise starting from the front side.

  4. On the sides of the hole prepared for the latch (magnetic or simple), there will be a niche where the mounting plate is inserted.

  5. Install the lock and fix it with the fixing bolts included in the kit.
  6. Attach the handle of the fixing element. The correct installation diagram is attached to each device. As a rule, the handle is first disassembled, after which its individual elements are fixed.

  7. The final stage is the installation of the reciprocal bar, where the fixing tongue will go. To do this, a niche is made opposite the castle and a bar is installed there.

Important! If the latch is installed correctly, then it will not touch the elements or make creaking sounds during operation.

You need to know how to properly operate the magnetic lock - only in this case it will serve for a long time and reliably. Here are some simple rules:

  • the magnetic element and the reciprocal bar must be cleaned of adhering debris and metal dust;
  • to ensure the clamping force declared by the manufacturer, it is better to follow the instructions during installation. The recommended gap size is important - if you “leave” the parameters even by a couple of millimeters, the holding force will decrease, this also applies to the magnetic latch;
  • to prevent oxidation of the magnetic mechanism, all elements are wiped from moisture;
  • check the fastenings of the lock, the magnetic block and the counterpart, if necessary, tighten the self-tapping screws.

Properly installed magnetic lock can last for many years.

Conclusion

The magnetic latch for interior doors is a reliable product with a simple design, designed for a considerable service life. They are also popular due to the simple installation, which even a beginner can do.

They have several structural varieties, but they have one functional task - holding the door in the closed position without using a key. They are used everywhere on the entrance and interior doors of premises for any purpose.

Basic requirements

The following requirements are traditionally imposed on the door latch:

  • reliable fixation of the door, excluding its opening from an accidental gust of draft or light touch;
  • noiseless operation - constant loud clicks do not add comfort to our lives;
  • uninterrupted operation - no one wants to become a “hostage” of a jammed door latch in a bathroom, shower or bedroom.

Structural varieties

The door latch can be a separate device or part of the main lock.

Some latches have the function of quickly locking closed doors (locking the door from the inside). Such devices justify themselves in those rooms where there is a need to lock themselves: a bathroom, a bathroom, a bedroom, an office.
In the combined version of the latch with a door lock, various types of locks are used: lever, cylinder, electromechanical, combined. The exception is rack-type locks - they do not use a latch.

***
Attention! If the door latch is actuated not by a rotary manual, but by a key, then there is a risk of leaving the room and slamming the doors behind you, forgetting the keys of the house.
Therefore, it is better to choose locking systems in which the door latch is controlled by double-sided handles, and the full fixation of the door is provided by the lock bolt.
***

Types of door latches:

  • with classic metal tongue- the most common design;
  • latches with plastic tongue- a latch of a classical form, but made of plastic significantly reduces the noise level;
  • roller or ball– the door is fixed by a spring-loaded rotating roller (ball);
  • magnetic- a kind of door locking mechanisms in which the door is kept closed by means of a magnet;
  • electromechanical- implement the function of remote or electronic control of access to the premises (key-fobs, RFID-cards, other identifiers).

Let's take a closer look at the types of latches.

Latch Latches

The automatic door latch is known for its ability to automatically slam shut when the door is closed. Fixation is provided by a spring-loaded bevelled tongue. During the closing of the door, it comes into contact with the back bar, in a sliding motion along it it enters (“hides”) into the latch body, and when it reaches the nest, under the action of an expanding spring, it enters it, fixing the door leaf.

To release the latch, rotary knobs are used, which, when pressed, release the latch. On some locks, it is possible to hide the latch tongue with an additional turn of the key.
The latch may have a latch that securely holds the tongue inside its body. That is, when the door is closed, you block it, and in the open position, you can temporarily “turn off” the latch to avoid spontaneous slamming of the door.
The rotary handles used to open the latches are not only a mechanism, but also an element of decor.
Latches that use a plastic tongue have a separate advantage - they are quiet.
In locks with an electromagnetic drive, it is the latch that acts as a bolt - a tongue with a beveled surface, actuated by an electromagnet.

Roller latches

A spring-loaded rotating roller or ball, when the door is closed, enters the nest of the striker, fixing the door.
To open it, you need to apply a little force to the door by pulling the door towards you or pushing it. The socket is shaped so that when the door is moved, the roller is pressed into the latch housing, releasing the door from engagement with the door frame.

The roller is completely independent - it is not connected with other locking bolts, door latches and handle. Its function is to fix the door leaf when it is closed. It is not designed to lock the door
This version of the locking mechanism for the door can be used on double-sided (pendulum) hinged door structures.

Magnetic latches

The simplest one resembles a magnet on the door of a furniture cabinet. That is, the main part of the magnetic latch is located on the door frame, and on the door leaf there is a plate made of a ferromagnetic alloy. In the closed position, the magnet holds the plate, fixing the door in the closed position. This is the same roller latch in functionality.

More complex mortise magnetic latches use a rotary magnetic bolt, which, when the door is closed, is drawn by the magnetic field of the striker (the magnet in it) into its nest. To open such a latch, the presence of rotary handles is required.
The main advantage of magnetic latches is the complete noiselessness of their operation.

Electromechanical latches

Previously, this kind of latches could be seen mainly on the front doors of industrial, service or office premises. But the intensive development of video intercom technology has led to the fact that they have become widely used not only in private cottages (opening gates, gates, garages), but also in apartments. Now, simply by pressing a button on the intercom, you open the front door to your visitors.
A functional limitation on the use of electromagnetic latches is a temporary (emergency) lack of power supply. In such a situation, there are 2 options for the configuration of the latches:

  • normally open - has a drawback in the absence of power, your doors will be unlocked, although from the point of view of fire safety - this is their good property;
  • normally closed - you will not be able to leave the room in the absence of power supply.

To prevent such force majeure events, an alternative backup power supply for locking systems is provided.

Nuances of choice

When choosing door latches, it is necessary to analyze their functional load, that is, the list of functions that the latch should perform.
To simplify this task, contact professionals who are familiar with the huge range of door latches available on the market.
When choosing, you should not focus only on the price factor - you can lose more in the event of an early breakdown of an unreliable product.

The door lock device must be reliable to protect against breaking and unauthorized entry into the premises. The level of protection depends on the type of lock and the secret mechanism that provides security.

Types of door locks

Depending on the form of execution, the lock can be:

The body of the mortise lock is fully integrated into the door leaf. Such a device has a sufficient level of protection of housing from breaking and entering. The invoice is attached to the door leaf from above or can be partially recessed into it. The hinged locking mechanism can have a different size and design. It consists of a cylindrical bow and a body with a secret and happens:

  • small;
  • average;
  • big.

The choice of a mortise, padlock or padlock depends on which door it will be installed on.

All mechanical locks have the following components:

  • a case that hides the secret mechanism of the lock;
  • bolt or deadbolt;
  • core (larva mechanism) into which the key is inserted.

Inside the larva is a secret mechanism of the lock, which differs depending on its type.

The locking mechanism of a plastic, metal or wooden front door can be cylindrical, without leverage and leverage. In addition, there are also combination locks, screw, with ciphers and locking mechanisms on interior doors. Thus, there are a lot of devices for ensuring safety and tranquility. In order to have an idea about the features and design of each of them, we will consider all these types of locks in more detail.

Cylinder lock device

The cylinder lock is opened with a small key, which on one side has teeth of various shapes and sizes.

A cylinder lock can be a mortise or padlock and have the following components:

  • top and bottom pins;
  • spiral springs that actuate them and return them to their original state after removing the key from the larva.

The mechanism of the cylinder locking device rotates, setting the bolt in motion, only when the pins are flush with the surface of the larva. This is achieved if a “own” key is inserted into the key groove, which allows you to assemble them in the desired position. If a “foreign” key is inserted into the mechanism of the larva, then the pins inside will not be positioned correctly, which will prevent it from turning and opening the lock.

The design of the cylinder door lock can be single and double. Single mechanisms are used for door locks that can only be opened with a key from the outside. Double are designed for those locks that are controlled by a key from two sides.

Lever lock mechanism

The level lock is considered one of the most reliable among all locking devices for the entrance plastic, metal or wooden door. Its secret lies in a group of plates or levers, which have cutouts of various shapes. Each of them corresponds to the protrusions and depressions on the key, which allow you to assemble the plates in the right way, and open the lock.

The reliability of a lever lock depends on the number of levers. Each individual option for placing lever plates of different contours is called a series. By increasing the number of levers with different arrangements of protrusions and depressions, you can increase the number of series. For a lock with three plates, it is 6. For four-lever locks, the set of plates gives 24 different series, respectively. In locks that have two rows of levers, the number of series reaches 150. Double-bit keys are used to open them.

The principle of operation of a lever lock is similar to a cylindrical one, only the role of pins in it is performed by steel plates. To increase protection, so that it is more difficult to assemble the plates and make it difficult to open the lock with a random key, lever cutouts are made in various sizes, and the plates themselves are of different thicknesses.

Leverless lock

The structure of a leverless lock is characterized by only one plate, so this lock is considered the most unreliable. Therefore, experts recommend installing it on internal doors.

The secrecy of leverless locking devices is given by the configuration of the shape of the key slot. In addition, on the base of the lock, opposite the key gap, there are barrier plates or annular ledges. They are made in the form of concentric circles, to bypass which special slots are made along and across the grooves of the keys.

Combination lock

The code lock can be electronic or mechanical. For electronic, a prerequisite for operation is a connection to an electrical network or an autonomous power source. Mechanical is easy to install and use. In addition, it is easy to reprogram if necessary.

The code lock scheme is a bolt, which is activated by pressing the required combination of numbers in the case of the mechanical principle of the device. For electronic locks, you need to enter a secret combination or use a magnetic key.

Electronic devices are more reliable than mechanical devices and are widely used on the front doors of offices, buildings, and residential apartment buildings.

Locks on interior doors

The lock can be installed not only on the front door, but also on the interior door. However, it is difficult to call it full-fledged locking devices, because any lock must have a secret that provides at least minimal protection. And the locks on the interior doors do not have such a secret. They include the following components:

  • handles and external decorative overlays;
  • bolt driven by a handle;
  • blocking mechanism.

The lock cylinder on the interior door has no internal structure. Through it, you can get to the internal latch and unlock the mechanism connected to the handle and preventing the free opening of the door.

Knowing what locks consist of and having an idea of their principle of operation, you can more confidently choose a locking device on which your safety and the safety of personal property depend.
