A topiary made from pine cones is considered a stylish and fashionable decoration for the home. You can make it yourself, which means you can give part of your soul to creating comfort.
The round shape of topiary has been known since the creation of the Gardens of Babylon, where shrubs and trees were given fancy round shapes. The development of gardeners' art continued in the gardens of Japan and Versailles.

What does topiary consist of?

Nowadays, the European tree or tree of happiness is made from various materials of natural and artificial origin. These can be coffee beans, acorns, chestnuts, pasta, nuts, cinnamon sticks and others. Regarding the shape, it depends on the imagination of the manufacturer. The most common option is a ball, but not far from it is a cone, a heart, a number.

Topiary made from cones is considered one of the simplest and most effective. Material for creating a decorative element can be found in any city, even a metropolis. Even talented children can cope with the production scheme. And the structure of the cone turns the decoration into an original design step. The topiary trunk is made of branches, thick wire, tubes or a combination of different materials.

Decorative topiary is an artificial low tree, according to popular belief, capable of bringing comfort, warmth and well-being into the home. The classic version of decoration consists of five main elements:

The base ball on which the crown of the product is attached. It is made from newspapers, polyurethane foam, balloon or polystyrene foam. In handicraft stores you can buy ready-made plastic blanks.
Crown, which is considered the main element of topiary. The choice of materials depends on the imagination of the needlewoman. These can be coffee beans, cones, acorns, Christmas balls and even candy.
Trunk. You can also make it yourself from cardboard, a pencil, or a twig. The main thing is that it looks like a tree.
Potty. The tree of happiness must be secured in a flowerpot, glass or jar so that it does not fall. Here, too, everything depends on the imagination of the master. Even an ordinary plastic cup can be turned into a work of art.
Decorative elements. To hide the gaps between the main materials and decorate the craft, use original, beautiful decor. For example, the trunk can be decorated with ribbons, and beads, flowers, and leaves can be added to the ball.

Topiary needs care, like any interior element. If we create it with our own hands, it is especially precious to us, so follow the operating instructions:

keep from mechanical damage (do not let the child play, do not drop);
hide from direct sunlight so that the product does not fade or lose its color;
regularly clean from dust using a soft brush or hair dryer (not high power);
do not wet, otherwise the glue will no longer hold the decorative elements;
if coffee beans are used in the design, you can wipe the base ball with a damp cloth to reveal the wonderful aroma;
Do not store near heating devices, so as not to overdry the product, which leads to its fragility.

Advice! The crown of the tree of happiness can be made from any materials, from paper flowers, Christmas tree decorations, to money, threads and natural materials. Don't be afraid to experiment to create a unique, original composition.

Preparatory work

On the eve of the New Year holidays, it is important to decorate the house not only with Christmas tree decorations, but also with fresh fragrant pine cones. When choosing material for crafts, pay attention to the fruits of pine, spruce, and cedar. However, products from other coniferous trees will also be an excellent interior decoration.

To make a tree of happiness you need the following materials:

cones of any coniferous tree;
heat gun equipped with silicone glue sticks;
foam for the base (ball);
old newspapers;
decorations for the trunk, pot and ball (ribbons, beads, buttons, moss, artificial or dried flowers);
plaster or alabaster (the second takes longer to dry);
ceramic dishes;
materials for creating a trunk (wooden stick up to 45 cm);
spray paint;
threads

To make the tree of happiness neat, you should sort the cones so that only the same size remains. Also, do not forget to rinse freshly picked cones in water and dry them well in the oven for 10–15 minutes.

The oven temperature should be 350 degrees. Check for insects. They should not be in fruits.

If you use foam as the base for the European tree ball, make sure that the trunk is tightly attached to it. But it's better to choose old newspapers or papier-mâché. The paper needs to be crushed, placed in hot water and added with shavings of laundry soap. After the material swells, it is easy to form a ball out of it. True, you need to dry it well before decorating.

For a base that fully supports the finished structure, it is recommended to choose one of the mounting mixtures. This can be cement-sand mortar, gypsum, alabaster or putty. Floral foam or polystyrene foam is also suitable. The best option is alabaster, as it does not crack, is installed quickly and easily and is available in every hardware store.

To fill one medium pot with alabaster, you need to thoroughly mix 1 kg of the mixture with three glasses of water. When you get the consistency of thick sour cream, the mixture needs to be poured into the pot. The barrel is installed immediately; it must be kept in one position for 2–3 minutes. The substance dries in 12–24 hours. Only after this can you decorate the pot with fabric, beads and other available materials.

Advice! To correct the shape of a sloppy newspaper ball, wrap it with thread.

Decorating a topiary with pine cones

When the preparation process is completed and all materials have been collected, you can begin to design the topiary. If you follow the instructions, you can highlight the following steps for completing a decorative element:

Make a trunk out of a wooden stick. You need to cut off the height you want, taking into account the size of the pot and the diameter of the ball. It can be painted, wrapped in ribbons, or left as a tree.
The barrel must be inserted into the ball and secured tightly with glue. If the base of the ball is foam, then the hole for the barrel must be made in advance.
Paint the ball with dark brown paint to mask the gaps between the cones.
The pot is filled with alabaster so that it does not reach 2–2.5 cm from the top edge of the container.
The trunk should be placed in the center of the pot. If there is alabaster inside, wait until it dries. If there is floral foam, much less time is spent.
Warm up the heat gun, apply a small drop of glue to the pine cone and quickly glue it onto the previously prepared ball.
Consistently repeat the procedure and carefully attach cone to cone to the base. Try to ensure that there are no empty spaces and the glue is not visible under the cones. If they are different sizes, try to secure the large cones first, then the medium and small ones. In the case of the same size, it is best to place the cones according to the honeycomb principle.
The base in which the barrel of the product is attached should be decorated. Dry moss is great for this. To keep it in place, use hot glue.
Decorate the topiary. You can use ribbons, beads, spray paint and other accessories.

The procedure for making topiary with your own hands will not take much time. But you will decorate the interior of your home with a unique designer item. Therefore, feel free to go to the nearest park for pine cones.

Advice!As a stand for topiary, you can use a glass jar, cup or regular glass, decorated with fabric.

Autumn decor: original ideas

In the fall, you can use many natural materials for crafts and decorations that you can make yourself. The most popular are pine cones, acorns and seasonal dried berries. To bring some warmth into your home during the cold season, create your own autumn topiary. To do this, follow the step-by-step instructions:

Prepare materials for work. You will need a straight branch for the trunk, twine, beads, a glue gun, a stand and bronze paint. The main details are acorns with caps and cones.
Make a tree ball out of foam or newsprint.
To make a trunk, wrap a dry branch with twine.
Connect the finished newspaper ball and the barrel. Place the structure on the stand.
Start decorating the tree crown. To do this, glue beautiful cones and whole acorns onto a pre-prepared ball.
After the glue has dried, treat the decorated ball with bronze paint.
Place crepe paper in between the acorns and pine cones.
You can add beads, decorative fruits and autumn berries to the composition.
You can decorate the top of the pot with dry moss or a beautiful fabric.

Remember that topiary is called the tree of happiness. It brings peace and prosperity to the home. Therefore, when creating it there should be only bright, good thoughts. A positive attitude charges the jewelry and gives it special power.

Advice! When using acorns to decorate your topiary, be careful not to dry them out. In this case, they will crack and the fake will deteriorate.

New Year's topiary is the best home decoration

When choosing a gift for your loved ones for the New Year, do not forget that things made with your own hands are most valued. They preserve the warmth and tenderness with which we create. Cone topiary is no exception. It can be decorated with Christmas tree needles, rain, New Year's balls and other elements that give a festive mood.

To create a New Year's topiary, prepare in advance a flower pot, unnecessary newspapers, threads, and a plastic tube. There should be two types of glue: PVA and Super (if there is no pistol glue). To secure the structure, choose gypsum plaster or alabaster. To decorate the composition, do not forget to collect pine cones, prepare white and golden water-dispersion paint, sisal, organza, padding polyester, large pearl beads, toothpicks, scissors, an awl and a brush.

Step-by-step instruction:

Make a topiary base. Dilute gypsum plaster with water to the consistency of sour cream in a special container. Fill the flower pot with the mixture and insert a plastic tube like a stem. Paint it with gold paint.
Make a ball out of old newspapers and wrap it tightly with thread to make a ball.
Make a hole in the ball for the barrel, add glue there and insert the tube into the newspaper ball.
Cover the ball with padding polyester and tie tightly at the base.
Sort the cones, wash, dry and paint with water-dispersion paint. After drying, decorate the cones with golden glitter.
Make holes at the base of the cones and place them on toothpicks using glue.
Also secure the pearl beads with glue on toothpicks.
Cut organza and sisal into square pieces. Roll sisal into balls.
Start decorating the ball. In a free order, make holes in the ball with an awl and thread cones, elderberries, and sisal balls in turn. Fold organza several times and also use it as decoration.

A reminder of basic materials for beginners

Topiary consists of: crown, trunk and base in a pot. Everything is clear with the crown - we will make it from cones, acorns and/or chestnuts. What can be used as its basis? Most often, foam balls (sold in art or office supply stores) or floral foam balls (sold in flower shops) are used for this purpose.

You can use any stick as a trunk: a strong branch (previously dried), a simple pencil, a knitting needle or a wooden stick. If you don’t like the original look of the trunk, then you can wrap it with ribbons, twine, or simply paint or tint it. Finding a cute pot won't be difficult. In fact, an ordinary clay pot is best suited for a topiary of chestnuts, pine cones and acorns. If desired, it can be painted or artificially aged.

As for the base that will hold the tree trunk, here you can choose any mounting mixture (cement-sand mortar, putty, plaster or alabaster) or the same floral foam/foam. If you prefer the first option, we recommend using alabaster. It is available, easy to spread and does not crack. And here are the instructions for its use:

To fill 1 pot with alabaster you will need about 1 kg of mixture and about 3 cups of water. Stir the solution for a couple of minutes. Once the mixture has thickened to the consistency of thick sour cream, pour it into the pot, set the barrel and hold it level for 2-3 minutes. Leave the mixture to dry for 12-24 hours.

Master class 1. Round topiary from pine cones and more

Since topiary is made approximately according to the same principle, you can use our instructions to create topiary not only from pine cones, but also from chestnuts and acorns.

What you will need:

Flower pot;
Base ball;
Some kind of mounting mixture or polystyrene foam/flower foam for attaching the trunk to the pot;
Pins with tips;
Cones, chestnuts and/or acorns;
Hot glue gun;
Dry moss (can be replaced with sisal fiber);
Wooden stick (can be replaced with a pencil);
Ribbon (optional).

Master Class:

Step 1. First we need to prepare natural materials for work.

Freshly picked buds should be rinsed in water and then dried in the oven at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes.
Acorns and chestnuts simply need to be rinsed and dried naturally. The main thing is to conduct a thorough inspection of them for the presence of cracks, which are dangerous because insects can live in them. Small bugs and worms can eventually move into other fruits.

Step 2. Cut the wooden stick to approximately 45 cm (the height of the trunk may be different depending on the height of the pot, the diameter of the ball and your wishes for the height of the product). If necessary, paint the barrel.

Step 3. Insert the barrel into the ball and secure the attachment point with glue. If you are working with foam plastic, then you need to first cut a hole in it using a knife and scissors.

Step 4. Paint the ball dark brown so that the gaps in the crown of the finished product are hardly noticeable.

Step 5. Dilute your mounting mixture according to the manufacturer’s instructions or dilute alabaster according to our instructions (see). Fill the pot with the mixture, not reaching 2-2.5 cm from the top edge of the pot. In this project, instead of a mixture, we used diced floral foam.

Step 6. Insert the stem into the center of the pot. If you are using any kind of mounting mixture, then the barrel must be inserted immediately after mixing it and held until the mass in the pot hardens.

Step 7. Heat up your glue gun and glue the pine cones/acorns/chestnuts onto the tips of the pins as shown in the photo below. Before you start decorating the tree crown, it is advisable to divide your materials into three groups - large, medium and small.

In fact, it is not necessary to use pins to attach the pine cones/chestnuts/acorns to the base, because you can simply glue them. However, it is with the help of pins that it is easiest to create a neat round crown.

By the way, fresh and soft acorns and chestnuts can be attached to toothpicks. If your fruits have already hardened, try soaking them in water for a while.

Step 8. Now it’s time for the most interesting part – decorating the tree crown. Our task is to insert pins into the base ball so that the cones/acorns/chestnuts are located as close to each other as possible and at the same time evenly, so that the crown turns out to be round. If the cones have different sizes, then first you need to glue the large cones onto the ball, then the medium ones and only then the small ones. If the material is approximately the same size, then they can be glued in rows according to the honeycomb principle.

Step 9: Cover the "soil" in the pot with dry moss (see photo below) or whatever material you have available and use hot glue to hold it in place.

Step 10: You can add decorations to the topiary, such as a ribbon tied around the trunk.

This topiary does not have a trunk, and its crown is formed only by halves of cones, namely the tops. Take note of this idea if you want the crown of your tree to have no gaps at all.

And here are the trees with a crown of chestnuts. The peculiarity of working with them is that it is necessary to glue additional decor between the fruits to close the gaps. For example, these could be rowan berries, sisal or small cones. Also keep in mind that due to the heaviness of chestnuts, it is advisable to both glue them and pin them.

Master class 2. Christmas tree made of cones

In addition to the traditional round topiary from cones, chestnuts and acorns, you can make a Christmas tree topiary. You can place such a New Year's decoration on the holiday table, on the mantelpiece or at the entrance to the house.

Here's what you need:

Pine cones come in different sizes, from large to small.
The base is in the shape of a cone made of polystyrene foam or floral foam. If you don’t have a ready-made base, then you can make it yourself from paper, newspaper lumps and cardboard.
Hot glue gun.
PVA glue.
Dark brown acrylic paint or brown paper.
Glitter (optional).
Brush.

Master Class:

Step 1. Skip this step if you have a ready-made tree base. If there is no base, then we suggest making it yourself. Roll a piece of paper (eg A3 size) into a cone of the desired size. Secure the cone with tape and cut off the excess paper at the base and top (that's where the cone will sit). Now “stuff” the workpiece tightly with balls of crumpled sheets of newspaper.

Next, cut out a circle from cardboard, the diameter of which is 2-3 cm larger than the diameter of the base of the resulting cone. Glue the cone onto the circle using tape as shown in the following photo. Woo-ala! The basis for winter topiary is ready.

Step 2. To disguise the original color of the base, you can paint it with dark brown paint or simply wrap it in brown paper, such as kraft paper.

Step 3. Once the paint on the cone is dry or it is completely wrapped in paper, start gluing the cones. First glue the first row of the largest pine cones to the bottom of the base.

Even in the fall, while walking through the park or forest, do not be too lazy to pick up some fruits of nature, the same leaves, rowan berries, acorns and, of course, pine cones. One can only imagine what kind of crafts can come out of all this, but the fact that a creative person will need all this simple belongings is for sure. For example, you can make amazing things from fir cones with your own hands. Or will you decide to make an autumn or winter souvenir not from spruce, but from pine, or maybe from the smallest, barely noticeable cones?

For a topiary with a crown of cones, you will need materials and tools that can be found in almost every home. But some things may have to be bribed.

Materials and tools:

Plastic bottle;
Bamboo mat;
Colored paper;
Glue;
Sackcloth;
Styrofoam ball;
Cones;
Branches;
Spray paint;
Ribbon.

This master class assumes that you will make a pot for the tree with your own hands. You can take a regular milk bottle, cut off the neck of it, and make the edges even. According to the shape of the bottom of the bottle, you need to make a piece of colored paper and glue it to the bottom with hot glue.

Further MK includes the following steps:

A bamboo mat is needed to finally decorate the pot. The mat is cut so that it extends slightly beyond the edges of the milk bottle. The mat is wrapped around the cut bottle and glued to it. Using the example photos, you can take a closer look at what kind of decor is achieved using bamboo rugs.
The decor of the pot is completed by gluing burlap and a bow. A piece of burlap should also be wrapped around the flowerpot, first it is glued, and a thin satin ribbon is placed on top. You can insert a small sprig of rowan under the ribbon.
Next you will need a foam ball. This point is worth clarifying. Today, every second master class involves the use of just such a blank, which is purchased in handicraft stores. It serves as a solid base for crown formation. But you can make the base yourself. From the old method (a lump of newspaper) to searching for the same round small object (a rubber children's ball).
Make a hole in the ball into which to insert a topiary trunk made of cones. These will be branches folded into one bundle.

This point also needs to be considered in more detail. Typically, a classic master class on making topiary suggests using sushi sticks, pencils or wire as a base for the trunk. But this MK suggests that branches in topiary with cones will look more natural.

Topiary from pine cones: master class step by step

Once you have a pot, a foam base and a stem of branches inserted into it, it’s time to prepare the pine cones with your own hands. Ideally, they are small in size and approximately the same.

You can find a separate master class on how to decorate pine cones. The methods are very different. For example, you can cover them with white paint, then, after waiting for them to dry, apply PVA glue with a sponge, and sprinkle sea salt on top of the cones. You will get these snow cones.

You can paint the pine cones with spray paint. Which color is better to take, look at the photo. If this is a New Year's topiary, golden and silver colors are appropriate.

Returning to MK, the actions will be as follows:

Insert the crown ball on a branch into the pot. This can be a pot already filled with earth, or filled with fresh plaster. Whatever you want, the trunk of the branches must sit firmly in the pot.
You need to decorate the top with some earth or plaster. It can be artificial grass if the topiary is still autumn. You can also throw a couple of miniature maple leaves there. You can see the ideas in the photo.
Next, the master class instructs you to make a crown. Namely, to glue the cones. The elements are fixed with hot glue in a circle. Try to ensure that there are no voids, otherwise you will have to fill them with something. Or initially paint the workpiece with the same silver spray.
New Year's topiary involves snowy decor. Cotton wool, tinsel, the same sea salt, felt snowflakes, silver threads - you can make the most incredible snowball with your own hands. Or take artificial snow for such a topiary made from cones.

The master class offers the following points to choose from. A topiary with cones can be decorated with beads, satin ribbons, voluminous snowflakes, and even Christmas tree decorations.

New Year's topiary can include literally everything that is associated with the holiday. So, tangerines often become decor for cone topiary. This gives the tree a special aroma, and you can see from the photo that the souvenir looks very festive.

And how to make topiary from cones even brighter:

Let the forest animals “sit” under the tree; you can also make them with your own hands, or you can take ready-made figures.
A topiary made from cones and acorns that is completely white or white with silver will look elegant.
New Year's topiary can stand on a napkin-sun from your brightest photos of the year. Take twelve photos (according to the number of months), lay them out like sun rays, and place a topiary in the center. The whole composition was created with my own hands!

And next to such a topiary there could easily be a not-so-miniature squirrel. Moreover, such a squirrel can even seem to hold a pot with a tree with its own hands. Cute and cozy!

Autumn craft: topiary made of pine cones and chestnuts

There is no need to invent a separate master class. The actions will be similar, because the work differs only in the presence of these same chestnuts.

How can you achieve beautiful decoration of chestnuts:

Again, spray paints often come to the rescue. With gilding and silver - your case.
A scattering of chestnuts can be decorated with dot painting. The same one that paints smooth sea pebbles. It looks very original; the work on such painting (it doesn’t matter whether it’s stones or chestnuts) is almost like jewelry.
You can simply highlight the chestnut caps with a different color.

Chestnuts have a smooth structure, try to emphasize it.

Contaminated material should be washed and dried naturally.
Clean less contaminated material with a brush.
Unripe and unopened buds should be placed in a low-heat oven with the door ajar. You will notice that moisture will evaporate from wet cones, and unopened ones will gradually open in the form of spruce branches.

If, as planned, you want closed cones, then in order to prevent the petals from opening, you need to soak them in wood glue for 30 seconds. To transform, soak the cones in water, and then tie them with thread, giving them the desired shape. Materials for crafts can be left in their natural form or covered with artificial snow, varnish, and paint. Everything will depend on the intended craft.

One of the most popular crafts on the eve of the holidays is a Christmas tree. It's quite easy to do. Let's consider 2 options.

For work we will need:

cones;
cardboard;
glue;
pine branches or tinsel.

Step-by-step instructions for making a Christmas tree:

Make a cone-shaped base out of cardboard.
Attach the cones to the cone with glue at intervals.
Attach pine branches or tinsel between the cones.
The Christmas tree is ready. All that remains is to decorate the New Year's beauty.

Materials for making a Christmas tree craft from pine cones:

Step-by-step instruction:

Use cardboard to make a base for our Christmas tree in the shape of a cone.
