Topiary made of pine cones. Making topiary from cones: step-by-step instructions for making a small tree with photos and videos

The modern style and design of an apartment or room involves complementing the interior with hand-made accessories from natural materials. Topiary is considered a popular interior decoration - for example, autumn, from bright leaves and berries, or from cones: spruce or pine, cedar, a mix of several types. You can easily make such a tabletop “miracle” with your own hands; stocking up on materials for it is also not difficult. If you want to make such a topiary for the New Year holidays, or kindergarten, you can add red or gold balls to the composition, and slightly whiten the tips of the scales of the cones - this craft will delight both children and adults.

The modern style and design of an apartment or room involves complementing the interior with hand-made accessories

Topiary is usually made according to one principle, regardless of the material that is used as the basis for such a design decoration. This tabletop tree is artificially “grown” in a pot; acorns and chestnut fruits are usually used as the main element of the crown, but, most often, it is made from spruce or pine cones.

In order to make a table top topiary you will need the following materials:

  • a flower pot;
  • foam ball for the base - do not use a balloon one;
  • mounting mixture;
  • pins with tips;
  • Pine cones;
  • glue gun;
  • dried moss;
  • wooden stick for a tree trunk.

Master class on making tropiary according to the traditional pattern step by step:

  1. The cones are washed in water and then dried in the oven for a quarter of an hour. The wooden stick is tinted with paint or treated with varnish.
  2. The foam ball is placed on the prepared stick, fixing the joint with glue, after which it is painted with any dark-colored paint.
  3. Fill the flower pot with the mounting mixture diluted according to the instructions, not reaching the top by about 3 centimeters. The trunk of the future tree is inserted into the center of the pot and held for a couple of minutes to fix it.
  4. Using glue, place the cones on the head of the pin, distributing them by size.
  5. Pins are inserted into the crown of the ball, trying to place them as close to each other as possible, thus trying to form an even shape.
  6. The mounting mixture in the pot is covered with dry moss, securing it in the pot with glue.

The trunk can subsequently be decorated at your discretion with ribbons, beads, sequins or any other decorative element.

Creation is no longer an activity only for schoolchildren. More and more ideas are emerging about combining man-made objects and elements of natural origin. Want to make an exclusive Step by step process is given below. Study the tips, look at the photos. You will definitely get inspired, and you will be able not only to repeat the sample, but also to come up with an original idea yourself.

DIY souvenirs

The fashion for handmade things has ceased to be the preserve of a select few, but has become a trend among everyone. Knitting, embroidery, decoupage, metal art - all this has become available to everyone.

Thanks to the abundance of information and numerous opportunities to purchase any creative material, mastering any technique is easy even for a beginner. To create a beautiful thing with your own hands, you just need to be patient, study the instructions, purchase everything you need and start creating.

However, there is one problem. You can buy almost anything, but the price of some art materials is very high. If you want to master a budget technique and make original souvenirs from what literally lies under your feet, then the best option is a tree, an animal figurine, a photo frame, a basket and much more that anyone can make without any special artistic skills skill.

Advantages of natural material

Any object that is related to the natural environment is environmentally friendly. It contains no synthetics, chemicals or other industrially produced substances. This is a significant advantage, as it can be used anywhere. This craft can even be placed in a small child’s room.

With its beauty, nature has always inspired people to create. The same applies to natural materials: dried leaves, flowers, collected cones, nuts, twigs. In nature, everything is subject to the laws of harmony and beauty. By adding a little man-made energy to the collected material, you can create, for example, a tree of pine cones of amazing beauty and grace. How to make such a craft will be described below. If you have a rich imagination and your imagination works well, you yourself can come up with as many original souvenirs as you like. And for motivation, it’s worth looking at ready-made examples.

Decorative tree

Making souvenirs is a very exciting process. It's always nice to see the result of your work. In order for a gift not only to please the eye, but also to have some sacred meaning, you need to choose the right object that you will create and give it the appropriate idea.

From this point of view, a miniature tree made of cones can be an excellent souvenir. It's very easy to do step by step. Such an object will symbolize life, happiness and prosperity. If you add decorative elements to the souvenir, such as coins, hearts, bows, you will get a symbolic money tree or a tree of love and good luck, etc.

It can be absolutely any form. As a base you need to find a suitable branch or snag. It should be secured to a solid base so that it holds tightly and does not fall even taking into account the future weight of the cones. There may be few of them - it all depends on the size of the souvenir itself. For a desktop, a couple of dozen or less will be enough. It is important to beautifully place the pine cones on the driftwood so that it looks natural. Use the natural color of the elements or paint them gold, silver, white, pink or any other color according to your idea.

The component parts can be glued together, but there is a second option. The wire is taken and cut into pieces of the required length. Each element is fixed in a cone. The branches are woven from the resulting “bouquet”, and the stem is fixed in a solid base. The frame is wrapped with decorative tape, beautiful fabric or paper. The product can be supplemented with beads, bows or anything else.

Christmas tree made of pine cones

On New Year's Eve, everyone tries to decorate their office desks with small festive Christmas trees. You can make a New Year's tree from pine cones. How to make it? Very simple.

The process of creating a souvenir will be as follows:

  1. Make a base from cardboard in the form of a cone with a bottom.
  2. For stability, fill the inside with crumpled paper and newspapers.
  3. Place the resulting structure on a solid base and secure it there.
  4. It is better to paint the frame in the color in which the tree itself will be presented (green, white, silver, gold, brown, if the product retains its natural tone). This is done so that the gaps between the cones are invisible.
  5. Sort the collected cones and start gluing them in rows. Place the larger ones at the bottom. As you move towards the top, try to choose smaller ones. It is best to attach them to the base using a heat gun. It is a device in which special glue rods melt under the influence of heat. Through the nozzle, the viscous composition is supplied to the junction of two objects. This is a very versatile device. In our case, it is convenient and gives the most reliable results.

So, making a Christmas tree or any other New Year tree from pine cones is very simple step by step. When the structure itself is ready, it can be painted and decorated with beads.

You can make not only fun crafts from cones that kids will happily play with. This natural material can become the basis for creating an original topiary.

Step-by-step instructions for making topiary

To make a topiary, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • cones;
  • polystyrene foam, cardboard;
  • glue gun;
  • decorative materials;
  • flower pot;
  • brown paint.

If you have all of the above, you can safely begin creating a masterpiece.

First you need to create a foundation. It is made in the shape of a cone made of foam or cardboard. You need to paint the resulting structure brown.

We form a tree. Starting from the top point of the cone, you need to glue cones of different shapes and sizes with a minimum distance between them. Now you need to carefully place the tree with its base in the flower pot.

From pine or spruce cones you can make topiaries of different shapes and sizes: square, oval, triangular, rectangular, large, small.

Another simple option for creating topiary

We will need:

  • cones, pine twigs, a thick branch for the trunk;
  • newspaper, paper, glue, scissors, masking tape;
  • twine, burlap;
  • decorative stones, gypsum mixture, pot.

After the components have been prepared, you can begin to make a tree from fir cones.

We start by creating a topiary crown by crumpling the paper and forming it into a ball. The resulting blank is covered with masking tape and painted brown.

After the paint has completely dried, it is necessary to make a hole in the ball, the size corresponding to the diameter of the tree trunk. Glue is poured into it and a pre-prepared branch is inserted. To strengthen the structure, it is advisable to wrap the trunk with twine, gluing the top and bottom of this material directly to the branch.

All that remains is to decorate the autumn topiary with pine cones. They are glued starting from the top of the ball. The gaps are filled with coniferous branches. Next, you need to wrap the pot in burlap and place the tree in it. After this, you can further decorate the product with beads, sparkles, flowers, and beads.

I have always admired the ability of people to make such magnificent compositions with their own hands. You can’t buy this in any store, and you can pleasantly surprise your friends. Great ideas to decorate your home for the holidays. I especially liked the topiary made of cones with rowan berries. Looks very original! I'll try to make something similar myself!

Gregory 01/20/2017

The whole family made a similar topiary with their own hands at the dacha. Moreover, they used pine and spruce cones. This type of cones can be used in two variations of their stage - fluffy and closed. This way there is more space for creativity, higher originality of the product, and a clearer meaning of the craft. For those especially interested in the question, I can suggest using one cedar cone as a highlight.

Marina 08/27/2017

Recently I accidentally saw an article about cones on the Internet and was hooked. That article suggested soaking this natural material in white (bleach) for a while. There was even a photograph. The bumps on it are really white! Beauty is not real! I think these bleached cones will make topiary even more interesting. You can also use both white and regular cones in one product. If only there was imagination, beauty would not take long to arrive! In general, I’ll be going to the forest soon! :)

Lara 09/05/2017

It’s very beautiful and unusual, but using a glue gun can be a very difficult task for a girl, it’s hard to squeeze out the glue, you need to put in a lot of effort to do it.

    Topiary is a low composition, an original tree made from natural or artificial materials. Topiary can be made from pine or fir cones, coffee beans (roasted or natural), various types of pasta - this article offers a master class on how to make several types of topiary with your own hands with a step-by-step description and photo.

    History of topiary

    Even in ancient times, garden design used the art of giving trees and shrubs decorative shapes. It is not for nothing that the famous Gardens of Babylon are considered one of the 7 wonders of the world - it was there that plants of bizarre shapes could be found, the crowns of which were formed by the skillful hands of court gardeners. Formed in the form of figures, garden plants have been called topiary since then. The art of creating figured trees was used in the gardens of Versailles and in Japan.

    A beautiful topiary from pine cones or coffee beans can be easily made in a few hours

    Nowadays, topiary (tree of happiness, European tree) is a small composition made of different materials, the height of which does not exceed 50 cm. Topiary can be made in different shapes: ball, cone, numbers, hearts, and can also be multi-tiered and have several stems .

    The materials for the base of the topiary are papier-mâché or foam figures; materials of natural or artificial origin are used for decoration: pine cones, coffee beans, nuts and nutshells, pasta, beads, organza, artificial flowers, cinnamon sticks, sisal, beads, foam balls.

    You can use a glass glass, cup or jar decorated with fabric as a stand.

    The trunks of decorative trees are made of thick wire or intricately curved branches, sometimes combining the use of different types of materials.

    Master class: topiary from pine cones. Learning to create with your own hands

    Pine, spruce, cedar and cones of other coniferous trees are quite suitable for DIY crafts. Cones are a product of nature; finding them in sufficient quantities is not difficult even in big cities. The material is suitable for DIY crafts, including making topiary. As part of this master class, you can quickly learn how to make topiary from pine cones with your own hands, using all your skills and original ideas in your creativity. The photos will help you make topiary from pine cones correctly and quickly.

    Types of topiary from cones

    Materials needed to make a tree of happiness:

    • pine or spruce cones;
    • heat gun with silicone glue sticks;
    • old newspapers or foam base (ball);
    • gypsum (you can use alabaster, but it takes longer to harden);
    • ceramic dishes (pot, cup, any container);
    • trunk (a strangely shaped tree branch, quite strong);
    • aerosol can with gold paint;
    • threads

    A set of necessary tools for creating topiary from pine cones

    First you need to sort the available cones, choosing ones that are the same size. When using a foam base for topiary, it is necessary to carefully strengthen the trunk in the ball. The best option for topiary is considered to be a papier-mâché ball, which is easy to make yourself from old newspapers. Newspaper should be shredded, filled with hot water, adding a small amount of laundry soap shavings. After a few hours, the paper will swell and it is easy to form a ball out of it, which should be dried thoroughly.

    Advice! If the newspaper ball is not quite even, you can additionally wrap it with thread to correct the shape.

    The heat gun should be warmed up well, drop glue onto the pine cone and quickly glue it to the base of the topiary. When sequentially gluing the cones to the base, try not to leave empty spaces. Excess glue looks very messy if it flows out from under the cones tightly pressed to the base, so the drop of glue should not be too large.

    The cones are attached to the ball with glue

    A pre-sharpened trunk is inserted into the ball covered with cones, securing the junction of the trunk and the base with glue. Now the stem should be carefully fixed in the selected vessel using a gypsum solution.

    Important! To prevent the appearance of cracks in a vessel filled with gypsum, a piece of thin wire or a crumpled piece of foil should be placed inside the container, which compensates for the deforming stresses when the gypsum solution hardens.

    Dry gypsum is diluted with water at room temperature to the state of liquid sour cream. Place the stem with the topiary base exactly in the container, add gypsum solution, not reaching the top by about 5 mm. The gypsum hardens quite quickly, and heat is generated; there is no need to be alarmed by this.

    Creating a topiary base

    The finished tree can be carefully coated with gold or silver paint, spraying it from an aerosol can. To get snow-covered cones, you can carefully apply glue to the edges of the cones, and then quickly cover the adhesive layer with semolina mixed with pearlescent glitter. The pine cone topiary is ready; additional decoration of the craft is at the discretion of the author.

    We make our own topiary from coffee (coffee beans)

    Coffee beans have a unique aroma that helps neutralize unpleasant kitchen odors. A handmade coffee tree can not only decorate the interior of your apartment, but also saturate the air in the room with the wonderful aroma of freshly brewed coffee. The master class on making topiary from coffee beans, offered in this article, will help you get the job done quickly and efficiently.

    Options for topiary made from coffee beans

    To work you will need:

    • high quality coffee beans (roasted);
    • silicone glue for hot-melt gun;
    • heat gun;
    • topiary base (any shape);
    • trunk;
    • ceramic vessel;
    • gypsum;
    • water;
    • decorative elements: bows, artificial flowers, cinnamon sticks, star anise seeds.

    Necessary tools for creating topiary

    The base of the tree is covered with coffee beans in one layer, placing them with the convex side up. The grains should be carefully adjusted to each other, achieving minimal gaps between the individual elements.

    Advice! Pre-painting the base of the topiary dark brown will help hide minor defects when gluing the grains.

    You can leave the topiary base glued in one layer, but adding a second layer of grains, which are glued with the cut side up, helps achieve a more decorative effect.

    Then the barrel is inserted into the base, which is strengthened with glue. The homemade topiary base is strengthened using gypsum dough in a suitable container prepared in advance. Dry gypsum powder is mixed with water to the consistency of sour cream, quickly pouring the solution into the container with the installed tree.

    The process of creating topiary from coffee beans

    The topiary stem can be left natural or pre-wrapped with decorative materials: moss, jute, ribbon. Until the final hardening of the gypsum, it is necessary to maintain the craft in a vertical state. The finished topiary can be varnished and decorated with any decorative details. Natural decorations look especially harmonious on a coffee tree: cinnamon sticks and star anise.

    Making topiary from coffee beans (coffee) with your own hands is not at all difficult. This craft can be done with children, and then the topiary can be used to decorate the interior or for an original gift.

    Master class: how to make topiary from pasta

    In this section you can learn how to make topiary from pasta or pasta, which are produced by the food industry in a variety of sizes and shapes. The material is quite affordable, and making topiary from pasta is not difficult.

    Pasta topiary

    Advice! When making topiary from pasta, it is necessary to provide for the mandatory finishing of the finished tree with varnish or paint. The protective film will not allow pasta to quickly deteriorate from the influence of atmospheric moisture and dust.

    Before starting work, you need to take care of a sufficient quantity of high-quality pasta. You should also prepare:

    • tree base (polyurethane ball, papier-mâché ball);
    • gypsum;
    • ceramic container;
    • pasta gun;
    • silicone glue sticks.

    The first operation consists of carefully gluing the pasta onto the base of the tree using a hot gun. It is worth doing this extremely carefully, ensuring the symmetry of each detail. Excess glue can ruin the product, so gluing parts should be done slowly, allowing the glue to completely harden.

    It is better to coat pasta with paint or varnish

    When the ball is completely covered with pasta, the barrel is inserted into it. The trunk can be pre-wrapped with decorative tape, jute fabric, soutache or other finishing materials.

    A topiary stem is placed in a pre-prepared ceramic opaque container, the vessel is filled with gypsum dough, similar in thickness to sour cream. The tree should be carefully maintained until the gypsum solution completely hardens in the ceramic vessel.

    Advice! Do not use transparent glass vessels - plaster, shining through the glass, looks sloppy and undecorative.

    Pasta topiary decoration

    A do-it-yourself pasta topiary can decorate the interior of a living space for a long time; you should only remember that pasta is not highly resistant to high humidity and quickly gets dirty from dust and gas deposits that settle on it. When finishing pasta topiary, it is best to apply a protective layer of paint or varnish to the product. It is allowed to paint the product with compositions from an aerosol can or manually. You can first paint the tree with gouache or acrylic, and then apply a layer of colorless varnish.

    Macaroni topiary can be decorated with sparkles or beads

    As additional decorations for pasta topiary, it is quite appropriate to use artificial flowers, colored bird feathers, organza, butterflies and other accessories.

    Do-it-yourself topiary: all the details of the operations can be seen in the attached photos.
