Five reasons to visit Luninets

1. Eat strawberries

The fields located around the city are given over to the cultivation of this berry, which has become an unofficial symbol not only of the city, but of the entire region. In Luninets, it is sold on the market starting from the end of May. They say that due to the large number sunny days and special soils, the local berry is especially tasty and fragrant. It is worth checking whether this is actually the case.

2. Walk around the city

In the center of Luninets, ordinary buildings have been preserved, which date back to the end of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. Of the interesting architectural monuments, there are the Exaltation of the Cross Church in a retrospective Russian style, the Church of St. Joseph, as well as the building of the former gymnasium. Together they convey the atmosphere of a cozy county town quite well.

3. Follow the footsteps famous people

4. Learn the secret of the "Red" church

Built of red brick, rare for these places, the temple looks like a hundred years ago. The most attentive tourists, walking near the Exaltation of the Cross Church, may notice one oddity. Sea anchors are visible on the domes of the temple in the lower part of the crosses. Where? Luninets has never been a port city. According to one version, this is because the holy righteous John of Kronstadt himself had a hand in the construction of the church. In 1897, passing through Luninets, he donated two hundred rubles for the construction.

5. Find Dortman's Mysterious Lobelia

One of the most unique monuments of nature is Lake Beloye near Luninets. Perfect oval shape with crystal clean water. Such a phenomenon for Polissya is not just a rarity, but nonsense. After all, the water in the rivers and reservoirs of the Pripyat lowland is brown and swampy. And here is just a crystal lake. And on it are whole islands of Lobelia Dortman - a flower listed in the Red Book of Belarus.

Story

The first written mention of Luninets dates back to 1449. In those days, this settlement was a village called Maly Lunin. The inventory of the Luninets estate dates back to 1588. Then there were 74 houses and a distillery. The population was just under 500 people.

The next important event took place in 1622, when Konstantin Dolmat presented Luninets to the Dyatlovichi Monastery. This state of affairs persisted even after this territory, following the results of the second partition of the Commonwealth, became part of the Russian Empire.

Only in 1842 the lands of the monastery were requisitioned and transferred to the treasury. As a result, the inhabitants of Luninets became state peasants. In the 1880s, the construction of the Polesye railways began. One of the branches passed through Luninets, thereby predetermining its further development.

Good transport links contributed to the development of the local economy and the influx of people. As a result, by 1897, more than 3 thousand people already lived in Luninets, and the number of households reached 855 (a postal station had been opened here ten years earlier). In addition, there were two mills in the village, and a parochial school and a public school were also built.

Soon after the outbreak of the First World War, the area became a frontline zone, which could not but affect the life of the local population. Luninets itself was occupied by Kaiser troops in February 1918, and following the results of the Riga Peace Treaty, it became part of Poland, where it remained until September 1939, being the center of the povet of the same name.

Soon after joining the BSSR, the Luninets district was created. The occupation of the city by the Nazi troops lasted exactly three years: from July 10, 1941 to July 10, 1944 (it was on this day that the city was liberated by the forces of the 23rd and 55th rifle divisions of the Red Army).

In 1963, Luninets became a city of regional subordination. In 1972, the first stage of the Polesyeelectromash enterprise was completed and put into operation, which became the basis of the local economy and further industrial development of the entire city.

In 1998, Luninets received its own coat of arms. The silver crown symbolizes the city's belonging to the Grand Duke of Lithuania, and the crossed arrows remind that it is an important railway junction. On the lower part The shield contains an image of Dortman's Lobelia, a very rare plant that is found on the territory of Belarus only in two places, including Lake Beloe, located near Luninets.
