What can be done with jailbreak. What gives a jailbreak? Expanding the iPhone

You may have a natural question: "What's next?". In this article, we will talk about the next steps after jailbreaking iOS 6.1 and the basic terms, namely: repositories, AppSync iOS 6+, ipa and tweaks from Cydia.

Jailbreak(Jailbreak, Jailbreak) - hacking the operating system, in which the user gets full access to the file system.

According to Apple's policy, the iOS file system is initially closed from users, which means that any modification of it is considered theoretically impossible. However, especially all the same, they find the “keys” to iOS and open it for public use.

In order to get an exploit (a program that will hack iOS), you need to find vulnerabilities or, in other words, “holes” in the security of the operating system. Finding new vulnerabilities becomes more difficult every year, and lately hackers have been forced to create teams specifically for the development of the next exploit.

The resulting exploit is “wrapped” in a graphical shell (GUI), tested and posted to the public. This is how the iOS 6.1 jailbreak came about.

Why do you need a jailbreak?

1. Unlock (Unlock, unlock, decoupling, unlocking).

From 2007 to 2010, namely for devices, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and partially iPhone 4, the main condition for unlocking a smartphone (decoupling from the operator) was a jailbreak. Software unlocking was the most popular and easiest way to “teach” a locked iPhone to call. After hacking the firmware - jailbreak, the user got the opportunity to programmatically modify the firmware of the device's modem, thereby forcing the smartphone to accept SIM cards of any operator.

Since 2011 (iPhone 4S and above), only one person managed to create a new generation software unlock - Sam Bingner, but his solution lasted only 4 days and was closed by Apple.

Due to the difficulties in developing a software unlock for the iPhone, and also, according to which a fine of $ 500,000 or imprisonment for a period of 5 years is imposed for unlocking a smartphone, the popularity of this jailbreak use is gradually losing its relevance.

In order to unlock iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 you need to apply .

2. Piracy (installation of hacked paid applications from the App Store).

An equally popular jailbreak movement on iOS, which has existed since 2007. With the help of jailbreak, the user gets the opportunity to install paid programs and games for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch for free. The most famous way to install pirated programs and games is the apptrackr.cd web application, which hosted tens of thousands of links to hacked paid applications (in .ipa format) from the App Store online store.

December 30, 2012 project administration Installous and apptrackr.cd services. At the moment, there are several analogues of the application, among which one can distinguish, and others.

3. Modding (programmatically changing the design and interface of iOS).

Many users speak negatively about iOS due to the inability to personalize the graphical shell and interface of the operating system, similar to that implemented in Android. However, with the help of a jailbreak, this restriction is removed to a more than sufficient extent. With the help of so-called (tweaks) you can significantly expand the functionality, usability and appearance of iOS on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

Where to begin?

After you have received a jailbreak on your iOS device, the Cydia application will appear on one of the screens. We talked in detail about what Cydia is.

Before launching Cydia for the first time, make sure that your device has Internet access.

Click on the Cydia icon and just watch the process. This may take several minutes. Cydia will update the packages necessary for the work, and if updates are found, you will be prompted to install them. You can see the number of available updates next to the Changes section in the red circle. We recommend that you install all available updates.

Regardless of how you plan to use your jailbroken device, you need to understand the term - repository.

You can learn about what a repository is, as well as instructions for installing repositories.

List of popular Cydia repositories:

First, install the repository sinfuliphonerepo.com, in it you will find everything you need for the first time. To search, use the Cydia search (tab Search).

If you are interested in installing hacked applications (in .ipa format), then the first thing you need is a jailbreak tweak AppSync iOS 6+(or for other version of iOS). For quick access to the most important switches (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G, screen brightness, etc.), install the tweak with which you will receive the add-on. We also recommend mastering the application - the best file manager for iOS.

For software unlocking iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 with modem firmware versions 01.59.00, 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04 and 06.15.00 install the tweak. The necessary instructions can be found in the section.

To change the appearance of iOS, use the tweak and various themes for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, which can be downloaded from Cydia ( Sections -> Thems)

So, jailbreak, or jailbreak, as they sometimes write

Initially, the iOS operating system is completely closed. In a nutshell, the user, using the iPhone or iPad, does not have access to the file system of the device. On the one hand, this is good - largely due to this, iOS is considered one of the most reliable mobile operating systems. On the other hand, the closed nature of the system limits the user and allows you to use only those functions and features that are allowed by the manufacturer.

The way out for those who want to use the iPhone, but want to get more features and freedom of action, is - jailbreak. When access to the file system is open, you can install third-party applications and software add-ons that expand the capabilities of the device.

What can be done with the iPhone by installing on it jailbreak? In this article, we want to talk about the most interesting features that you can add to your device from Cydia.

What gives a jailbreak?

  1. Full Russian alphabet in contact list. By default, letters from the Russian and English alphabets are displayed on the right. With the help of a special add-on, you can remove English letters and dots from the notebook shortcut bar, which makes it easier to use iPhone in Russia.
  2. Activator is one of the most important add-ons that is a component of many other utilities, but can also be used separately. The essence of the Activator action is that you can configure any action within the operating system to any gestures or button presses. Thus, you can fully adapt the interaction with the device and customize the use of certain functions in a way that is convenient for you!
  3. Many add-ons and programs that appear in Cydia after a while, in whole or in part, find their application in the official iOS operating system. You don't have to look far for examples - the Control Center feature in iOS 7 is the epitome of popular add-ons from Cydia that allow you to manage basic settings devices - cellular data, 3G and LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and others - without having to go to "Settings" and look for the menu item that is responsible for enabling or disabling a particular function. This makes using iPhone even more convenient!
  4. Many of us use some set of applications on our iPhone every day. We run some applications more than 10 times a day. With the help of jailbreak, you can organize quick access to programs right from your device's lock screen.
  5. Get full access to iOS, system folders and app data. Of course, the jailbreak procedure itself opens up access to the file system, but does not provide a solution for interacting with it. This can be done using the program - file manager, which can be installed from Cydia. In addition to directly interacting with any files inside iOS, the iOS file manager allows you to open and view many electronic file formats.
  6. Complete black list of contacts, which allows you to completely restrict the ability of certain contacts from your address book to call you or send a message. At the same time, unlike the Black List function built into iOS 7, you will be able to receive information about all blocked incoming calls and messages.
  7. Setting a password for access to programs or folders - now all important data, documents or photos will always be safe!
  8. By combining several software add-ons from Cydia, you can change appearanceiOS to the point of being unrecognizable - here opens up a huge scope for your creativity! You can change almost everything: with the help of special themes, you can change the color scheme of the operating system, the design and size of icons, their location, the animation of turning desktops, and much more.
  9. If you use not the built-in Safari browser to access the Internet from your iPhone, but a program from third-party developers (Opera, Chrome, iCab, etc.), then you probably already noticed that all hyperlinks from e-mail or other apps still open in Safari. It is not comfortable! If you decide to jailbreak your iPhone, then you can programmatically select standard browser iOS from apps installed on the device.
  10. If you still use Apple's standard browser as your main means of browsing the Internet on your iPhone, then with the help of a jailbreak you can "pump"safari: add the ability to download files, set any site as the home page of the browser, etc.

As you can see jailbreak gives quite a lot of opportunities to change and increase the capabilities of the iPhone. At the same time, the add-ons described above are only a small part of what can be done with the device after jailbreak. But you should always remember that you should not install add-ons and applications from Cydia without knowing what they are for and how they can interact with other add-ons and applications. you can do it yourself, or contact the specialists of our service center, who will be able to quickly and efficiently expand the capabilities of your iPhone.

Jailbreak- getting a complete file system access iOS devices. Powered by the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Apple TV, iOS is considered one of the most secure operating systems for a reason. iOS security is achieved through closeness: programs can only be installed from one source (the App Store), installed applications are allowed to work only with files in their own folders, and the user does not have the ability to edit any important system files.

Jailbreak, which literally translates from English as "jailbreak", allows you to bypass all Apple restrictions and allow access to any files inside your iPhone, iPod touch, iPad or Apple TV.

How is a jailbreak done?

Jailbreak devices are possible due to vulnerabilities in the iOS security system. To use these exploits, special utilities are created - for example, redsn0w, sn0wbreeze, Pwnage Tool, Absinthe, etc. As a rule, user participation is minimized - it is enough for him to connect his iPhone, iPod touch, iPad or Apple TV, enter the gadget into the desired mode and wait until the end of the jailbreak in the appropriate utility.

Instructions for all existing jailbreak methods are collected in the AppStudio Project Jailbreak and Unlock Encyclopedia, which you are currently reading. You can find the method you need and instructions for it by clicking on the link:

What are the benefits of jailbreak?

First, jailbreak gives you the ability to install Apps not from the App Store. Over the years, different sources of third-party applications for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad appeared - Installer, Rock Your Phone, Icy, but for quite a long time the main (and in fact the only) alternative app store is Cydia- a project by Jay Freeman (aka Saurik). Cydia contains thousands of third-party programs, add-ons, and tweaks, most of which are free. Cydia hosts those programs that do not fall into the App Store due to strict Apple restrictions, for example:

  • iFile- a full-fledged file manager for iOS, which on jailbroken devices plays the role of Finder or Explorer, allowing you to perform all basic file operations and work with archives

  • SBSettings- a utility that provides quick access to various switches, with which you can turn on or turn off 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS, cellular data transmission, adjust brightness, clear RAM, etc. in a couple of touches.

  • Springtomize 2- a universal control center for tweaks to the iOS interface, where you can change the number of icons in the dock, add columns and rows to desktops, adjust animation speed, increase the capacity of iOS folders to infinity, and much, much more.

  • BitSMS is an alternative SMS client for iPhone, which integrates into the system much deeper than the standard application, and has dozens of additional features.
    • The list can be continued for a long time.

Secondly, jailbreak allows you to engage in independent tweaking iOS for your own needs. For example, you can significantly extend the battery life of your gadget, or to quickly translate words in Safari, iBooks and other programs. Opportunities for additional customization of iOS - weight.

Thirdly, jailbreak opens up wide opportunities for iOS interface changes. With the help of the Winterboard theme manager, you can choose for yourself a completely different style of system interface design - from replacing the dock to completely modifying all system icons, switches and screens.

Fourth, although I don't want to write too much about it, jailbreak provides the ability to install pirated applications on the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. It is enough to replace a number of iOS system files, and code signature verification is disabled, which allows you to install applications that were not bought in the App Store. Alas, in the minds of many users, jailbreak is associated precisely with piracy, although the jailbreak procedure itself does not at all mean hacking applications. However, in 2015, this argument lost its value, because Apple allowed the installation of over-signed (including hacked) applications on devices without jailbreak for anyone who has Mac OS X at hand.

A detailed selection of good tweaks from Cydia, selected by our editors, can be found here:

You can read about what jailbreak gives owners of Apple TV useful in.

      Why is jailbreak dangerous?

First, jailbreaking greatly increases the risk of iOS crashing. Since all system files are available to the user, their rash modification can lead to the fact that the gadget will stop loading, as a result of which a firmware recovery will be required.

Second, jailbreak comes with security risks to your data. Although there are no viruses for iOS yet that infect jailbroken iPhones, iPod touches and iPads, corrupting them or stealing personal information of users, the possibility of their appearance cannot be ruled out.

Thirdly, a jailbreak will formally void the warranty on an iOS device. If you take it to a service center and they find out that the gadget has been jailbroken, you will be denied service. Fortunately, restoring the firmware completely erases all traces of the jailbreak.

      Is jailbreak legal?

There has already been a debate about this, even at the level of the US Congress. As a result, a completely reasonable point of view won out that a jailbreak is a conscious modification of the gadget software made by the user over the purchased device, therefore it is unacceptable to consider it illegal. Simply put, with your iPhone, iPod touch, iPad or Apple TV, you are free to do whatever you want - even jailbreak, even drowning, even throwing out of the window;)

How often does a jailbreak appear?

Alas, lately between the release of a new version of iOS and the appearance of a jailbreak for it, more and more time passes. Apple programmers are constantly improving the security of iOS, closing more and more vulnerabilities, so finding new ones every year is more and more difficult. By the way, another argument in favor of a jailbreak is connected with this: if no one had done it, Apple would not have guessed how many holes can be found in the security of their mobile operating system.

It is very sad to realize that the once popular jailbreak movement has practically ceased to exist.

Previously, all advanced iPhone and iPad users were waiting for the release of a hack of the new version in order to expand the capabilities of their devices. Now many have almost forgotten that the jailbreak still exists.

I managed to remember the iOS hack in 2018. I share my opinion and theses on this matter.

1. Apple closed almost all the holes

In the days of iOS 7-9, jailbreaks came out quickly and regularly. Hackers had time to release utilities for current versions of iOS, in case of failure, it was possible to restore the firmware and try again.

Every minor iOS update has been hacked so that users don't have to choose between system tweaks and jailbreaks.

Along with the waning interest in jailbreaks on the part of developers, a lot of work has been done at Apple. The Cupertinos have eliminated most of the known vulnerabilities and regularly pay hackers for new holes they find.

Jailbreak iOS 11 was released only 4 months after the official release of the system. Hackers have not spent so much time hacking for a very long time.

2. Developers have lost interest in jailbreak

Creator of Cydia and one of the "fathers" of jailbreak Jay Freeman (Saurik) has repeatedly stated that he sees no further point in the development of the community.

Despite this, he regularly updated Cydia every year after the release of the hacking tool, tidied up the repositories and adapted some tweaks.

This year, Cydia started working only a month after the release of the jailbreak, before that tweaks had to be installed manually.

Several main repositories are still not optimized for iOS, which does not allow placing tweaks and downloading extensions in them.

3. Tweaks for iOS 11 need to be rewritten

Tweakers are faced with a well-redesigned iOS structure. Almost all add-ons need to be finalized and adapted, and some won’t be able to work on iOS 11 at all.

Even the simplest add-ons that worked without modification from iOS 7 to iOS 10 in the eleventh version of the Apple mobile system are not supported or work with errors.

So far, one of the main tweaks has failed to adapt - Activator. This is not only a serious independent extension, the tweak is needed to install and run many other add-ons.

4. Tweaks for iOS 11 cannot be purchased

For unknown reasons, Saurik does not update Cydia's security system, which is required to purchase paid tweaks. Now you can only download a previously purchased tweak if it has been adapted for iOS 11.

Whether it will be possible to buy paid extensions for iOS 11 in the future remains a mystery.

Under such conditions, developers are not interested in creating new extensions and adapting old ones.

5. Most games and apps have moved to freemium and subscription

One of the areas of jailbreak has always been piracy. Users did a hack to install paid games for free.

Now many projects have switched to a subscription or in-game purchases. In this case, jailbreak is no help to pirates. All transactions take place on the developers' servers and it will not work to deceive the system on the device.

Even the Chinese hacker teams that raced to make jailbreak utilities a few years ago have lost interest in it. Then their development was paid by the creators of Chinese stores of hacked applications. Now all this is not very popular.

6. In iOS in its current form, there is practically nothing to change or add

Apple has long adopted most of the useful and necessary chips from the jailbreak world. Even the new iPhone X control gestures are also partly peeped from tweaks.

Already in iOS 10, many noticed that Apple no longer needed the jailbreak world.

The remaining useful additions are either too small to encourage users to hack or don't work in iOS 11.

7. Jailbreak iOS 11 semi-tethered

This means that after restarting the iPhone, you will need to repeat the jailbreak procedure. On the one hand, this is quite simple: you just need to run the application and click on the button, but on the other hand, the jailbreak program needs to be signed through a computer.

For those who do not pay $99 a year as an iOS developer, you will have to re-sign (reinstall) the Electra utility every week. After 7 days, the hacking app will no longer run on the iPhone.

Before that, jailbreak almost always came out as a full-fledged utility that hacked the system and allowed you to reboot the iPhone without losing the jailbreak.

7. iOS 11 jailbreak is very buggy

In a couple of weeks of not the most active testing, the iPhone with a jailbreak in my hands hung 4 times. I don't remember anything like this since Cydia on the first generation iPhone.

If the jailbreak was buggy before, then it happened at most once every few months or once every six months. Hacking has always been much more stable in the past.

What tweaks work?

Luckily, I ended up with an iPhone 7 Plus with a jailbreakable version of iOS.

I've trawled through the entire tweaks directory, found old favorite extensions, but most of them still don't work with iOS 11.

You can install only tweaks from the category of "fake whistles", minor cosmetic additions. No multi-window modes on iPhone and iPad, no conceptual interface changes, no advanced automation tools, no anti-theft and security applications (almost all of them are tied to Activator).

There are dozens of tweaks for the iPhone X, such as adding battery percentages, making it easier to remove apps from the multitasking bar, or using a dark interface theme.

The most interesting thing that we managed to find is a tweak for, but you need to install it manually.

Cydia is unusually boring and empty.

I connected my smartphone to my computer and launched the application. After several reboots, a message about a successful jailbreak appeared on the screen, and the Cydia application appeared on the smartphone. Everything seems to be OK, but what to do next? If you are asking this question, then this article is for you.

Introduction

One of the main features that jailbreak provides is deep device customization, improving its interface and expanding its capabilities. The user receives all these benefits only after installing special programs, also called tweaks. No one can say exactly how many tweaks exist today, but it is obvious that there are many more than the average user needs. Therefore, in this article we will try to describe the most useful tweaks with which you can turn your iPhone into a “perfect smartphone”.

INFO

Most of the reviewed tweaks require Respring to make changes to the system - a reboot of the Springboard device, which lasts 10-15 seconds.

When installing the tweaks mentioned in the article, do not forget to remove the old ones that perform similar functions. Otherwise, the device may go into Safe Mode.

Repositories

To install tweaks, you need to download them from somewhere, most conveniently - using the Cydia repositories. Many tweaks are missing from the pre-installed repositories, others are paid, so we recommend connecting the following repositories:

  • cydia.vn is a repository with a lot of paid tweaks from other sources that can be downloaded here for free. But the data transfer rate is quite low.
  • apt.modmyi.com is one of the more popular repositories. There are a huge number of different tweaks, many of which, however, are paid.
  • repo.insanelyi.com - a large number of hacked tweaks, fast upload of updates and new packages.
  • cydia.zodttd.com/repo/cydia is also a popular and stable repository.

You should not disdain the standard BigBoss repository. This is one of the few sources where it's nearly impossible to find unstable or insecure tweaks.

must have

Some tweaks should be installed immediately after jailbreaking the device, since without them further customization of the device may be impossible. Usually such tweaks are available in the standard BigBoss repository.

Pay attention to the app first. WhiteTerminal. This utility, which allows you to work with the device in command line mode, will allow you to run many other utilities that lack a graphical interface. The tweak is very simple and mimics the Terminal app on OS X.

If you plan to install hacked apps on your device (and this is one of the main reasons for jailbreak), download AppSync. The tweak, available in the https://cydia.appaddict.org/ repository, allows you to download untethered programs from your computer using programs such as iFunBox or iTools.

It is also worth getting a file manager. The best FM for jailbroken iOS devices - iFile. The utility, initially little different from its many competitors, today has received a number of additional functions and has become a truly universal solution. Key features:

  • moving, renaming, deleting files, changing their attributes;
  • watching videos, listening to music, working with text documents, presentations, editing TXT, HTML documents;
  • installing tweaks;
  • bulk file processing;
  • creating folders and shortcuts;
  • archiving and unzipping files.

If you are going to work with the device's file system from a computer, you will need afc2add or Apple File Conduit "2". Both of these utilities do not have an interface and are intended only for one thing - to open access to the device's FS root when connected to a desktop.

Tweak is intended for global change of Springboard (desktop) winter board, under which a huge number of themes and additions have been created. It can change the appearance of the dock and icons, allows you to add widgets to your desktop, and much more.

All WinterBoard themes are stored in the /Library/Themes/ folder, from which they can be extracted and modified. There is also a huge number of high-quality and well-developed themes that change not only the look of the desktop, but also part of the menu, and also have a high level of customization.

Improving the interface

Despite the fact that there are more default settings in the iPhone than in many Android firmware, some options are missing. This applies mainly to fine-tuning the interface. You can solve the problem with a tweak springtomize, which is already available for iOS 9. The utility settings are divided into sections of options for specific interface elements. You can change the animation speed, set up the creation of multi-level folders, remove the slider on the lock screen or hide separators in the control center, enter your own operator name, and make many other interface improvements.

Often, users of Android devices claim that Apple's OS lacks widgets on the "desktop". This functionality is implemented using a tweak iWidgets. Initially, only two widgets are available (analog clock and calendar), but their number can be expanded: in the themes for WinterBoard and simply in Cydia, there are widgets that work on the basis of this application. Just tap on an empty space on the home screen and a menu of possible widgets will appear. All widgets are stored in the /User/Library/iWidgets/ folder, where you can add them yourself.

To change the icon grid use Iconoclasm. In its settings, you can select the required grid for all screens, and for each separately:
