Kontakion 13

Oh, All-Singing and All-Merciful Mother, Most Pure Lady Theotokos! Hear the voice of Your praying servants and, having accepted this little prayer of ours, deliver us from all troubles, sorrows and misfortunes: give us a helping hand in life, kindle our enemies, heal our ailments, drive away all malice and enmity from us, in the sorrows of everyday life and grant consolation and remove the future torment of those who cry out for You: Alleluia.

(This kontakion is read three times, then ikos 1 and kontakion 1)

First prayer

Hope to all the ends of the earth, the Most Pure Virgin Mary, our Consolation and Joy! Do not disdain us sinners, for we trust in Your mercy. Quench the flame of sin and water our parched hearts with repentance. Cleanse our minds from sinful thoughts. Accept prayers offered to You from your soul and heart with sighing. Be an intercessor for us to Your Son and God and turn His anger away from us with Mother’s prayers. Strengthen the Orthodox faith in us, put in us the spirit of the fear of God, the spirit of humility, patience and love. Heal mental and physical ulcers, calm the storm of evil enemy attacks. Take away the burden of our sins and do not leave us to perish until the end. Grant us Your mercy and Your holy blessing to all those present and praying here, and always remain with us, giving those who come to You joy and consolation, help and intercession, so that we all glorify and magnify You until our last sigh. Amen.

Second prayer

O Most Holy Virgin, Mother of the Lord, Queen of Heaven and Earth! Hear the much-painful sighing of our soul, look down from Thy holy height upon us, who with faith and love worship Thy most pure image. We are immersed in sins and overwhelmed by sorrows, looking at Your image, as if You were alive and living with us, we offer our humble prayers. Imams have no other help, no other intercession, no consolation except You, O Mother of all who mourn and are burdened! Help us the weak, satisfy our sorrow, guide us, the erring, on the right path, heal and save the hopeless, grant us the rest of our lives to spend in peace and silence, grant us a Christian death, and at the Last Judgment of Your Son, the merciful Intercessor will appear to us, and always We sing, magnify and glorify Thee, as the good Intercessor of the Christian race, with all those who have pleased God. Amen.

Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos before Her icon “Otrado” (Consolation)

Akathist. The history of the emergence and veneration of the icon of the Mother of God. Ancient and miraculous icons and modern images...

Commemoration of the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos "Otrado": January 21 / February 3

Icon of the Mother of God "Consolation" or "Consolation". Historical reference

The Vatopedi Icon of the Mother of God is located in the ancient Vatopedi Monastery on Holy Mount Athos, built during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Constantine the Great, in the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The icon received the name "Vatopedi" due to the following incident. Near this monastery in 395, the young prince Arkady, the son of the Byzantine emperor Theodosius the Great, fell into the sea from a ship. Everyone decided that he had died, but later they found him sleeping under a coastal bush. Waking up, Arkady said how he was miraculously saved by the intercession of the Mother of God.

From this event the name “vatoped” (“bush of the youth” - Greek) came about. The holy blessed emperor Theodosius the Great (379 - 395, commemorated January 17), in gratitude for the miraculous deliverance of his son, generously donated the Vatopedi monastery.

At the place where the Tsarevich was found, the altar of the cathedral church was built, for the consecration of which Tsarevich Arkady himself came with the Patriarch of Constantinople Nektarios. The icon was placed in this temple near the right choir in a wall niche, in the chapel of Her name (only here monastic tonsures are performed in Vatopedi).

In 807, a gang of robbers wanted to attack the monastery, but the abbot of the monastery heard a warning from the icon not to unlock the gate; at this time the faces of the Mother of God and the Child were miraculously named. The baby, covering the Mother’s mouth with his hand, asked Her not to warn people about this. But Our Lady repeated the warning.

The amazed abbot called the brethren, and everyone saw that the outlines of the icon had become different: the Mother of God turned her face away from the outstretched hand of the Child. The abbot took precautions, and the monastery was preserved. In memory of this event, which occurred on January 21, 807, an unquenchable lamp burns in front of the icon. On Mount Athos this icon is also called “Consolation” or “Consolation”.

In the Tavolzhskaya convent, located in the Novokhopersky district of the Voronezh province, a locally revered copy of the icon called “Consolation” or “Consolation” was kept. Many who came with faith to this icon received healing from their ailments.

In 1898, in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “Otrada” or “Consolation”, a women’s community with the same name was founded by Countess Maria Vladimirovna Orlova-Davydova (monastically Magdalene) on her estate, located near the Lopasni station of the Moscow-Kursk railway, in the village of Shcheglyatyevo .

In Russia, the copy of the miraculous icon has been known since the 19th century.

Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, called “Consolation”, or “Consolation”

The Vatopedi icon “Otra-da”, or “Consolation”, was located on Mount Athos in the Vatopedi monastery, which was founded during the reign of Constantine the Great.

Near this monastery in 395, during a strong storm, Prince Arkady fell from a ship into the sea, and everyone decided that he had drowned. But when the ship landed at Mount Athos, the prince was suddenly seen in the coastal bushes, calmly sleeping. Waking up, the prince spoke about his miraculous deliverance from death through the intercession of the Mother of God. From this the monastery was given the name Vatopedi (youth’s bush).

The following legend has been preserved about this icon: in 807, on January 21, a gang of robbers intended to rob the monastery at dawn. But the Mother of God did not allow their villainous intent to take place.

The abbot of this monastery, while reading the morning rule, heard a voice from the icon of the Mother of God: “Do not open the gates of the monastery today, but climb the monastery walls and disperse the robbers.” Then the abbot saw that the faces of the Mother of God and the Child in her arms came to life. And the Baby said: “No, My Mother, let them be punished.” The Mother of God, trying to hold the hand of Her Son, turned her face away from Him to the right and repeated her words. Struck by horror, the abbot gathered the brethren and told them about what had happened. Then everyone noticed with amazement that the faces of the Mother of God and the Lord Jesus changed their position on the icon. Then the monks hurried to the monastery walls and repelled the attack of the robbers. From that time on, the Vatopedi Icon of the Mother of God became known under the name “Consolation”, or “Consolation”, and the position of the faces remained in the form in which it appeared with the voice heard three times by the abbot.

First prayer

Hope to all the ends of the earth, the Most Pure Virgin Mary, our Consolation and Joy! Do not disdain us sinners, for we trust in Your mercy. Quench the flame of sin and water our withered hearts with repentance. Grant us Thy mercy and Thy holy blessing to all those present and praying here, and always remain with us, giving those who come to You joy and consolation, help and intercession, may we all glorify and magnify You until our last sigh. Amen.

Second prayer

O Most Holy Virgin, Mother of the Lord, Queen of Heaven and Earth!
