Surface pump for pumping dirty water

As a result of basement flooding and in other cases with uncontrolled influx of polluted water, it is necessary to work with buckets for a long time, scooping out the liquid. However, a good self-priming surface pump will help to cope with the problem many times faster.

Such a device is designed for high-quality water intake with impurities of small debris.

Important: the surface pump for suction of dirty water lives up to its name and is mounted directly above the processed medium or in close proximity to it. Water intake is carried out using a specially lowered hose into the water.

The surface self-priming pump has a fairly wide scope. So, the device can be used for the following purposes:

  • Drainage of basements in case of flooding;
  • Intake and outflow of flood waters on the site to the nearest body of water;
  • Pumping out dirty water from a manhole;
  • Drainage of a septic tank or drainage wells;
  • Pumping water from decorative reservoirs and pools and much more.

Important: when choosing a unit model, take into account the ability of the device to pump water with certain inclusions. So, some pumps are able to process water with a debris fraction of only 5 mm, while other units are able to grind and process coarse-fiber debris in water.

Equipment types

All self-priming surface pumps for dirty and very dirty water (fecal sewage) can be divided into types according to the type of device of the working unit. So distinguish such pumps for dirty water:

  • Centrifugal pumps self-priming. Such units for dirty water are capable of pumping liquid with debris inclusions, the fraction of which does not exceed 10 mm. For devices of this type, it is important that the medium they process is inert to the alloys from which they are made. Otherwise, the aggression of the chemical liquid will disable the pump. It should be noted that for private use, centrifugal cantilever-monoblock pumps for pumping dirty water are more popular.
  • Drainage pumps. Along with centrifugal units, these pumps are also capable of pumping water with debris, the fraction of which does not exceed 10 mm. However, here the aggregate is also inert to solid inclusions in water. Such aggregates are called sludge. The drainage self-priming pump is distinguished by its ability to operate at high temperatures (from -10 to +90 degrees Celsius). At the same time, a pump of this type can lift the pumped medium to a height of up to 9 meters.
  • Self-priming screw pumps. Such surface aggregates are capable of handling viscous liquids. Therefore, they are often used for draining sewage pits and pumping fecal matter. The productivity of the screw surface pump is so high that it can be used to transport fertilizer in the form of or from a nearby reservoir to the garden. At the same time, the screw pump for dirty water is capable of pumping water, the temperature of which reaches +75 degrees.
  • Membrane aggregates. These workers for dirty water are considered the most powerful, because they are able to pump liquid with inclusions of viscous and very large debris (up to 50 mm in size). Most often, self-priming diaphragm pumps are used to drain soil, channels or trenches from seasonal flood waters.

Important: self-priming type surface pumps can be both stationary and portable. At the same time, stationary models have more weight and performance, while mobile installations for dirty water are compact in size and less powerful.

Advantages of self-priming pumps

Dirty water pumping equipment with a surface location has a lot of advantages. Here are the main ones:

  • Ease of installation and unpretentiousness in maintenance / care;
  • The ability to operate the pump for a long time without shutting down;
  • The strength of all elements of the working unit due to the use of heavy-duty alloys for the production of pumps;
  • Quite a favorable price of units with high technical characteristics.
  • However, self-priming surface units for dirty water are not without drawbacks. The main ones are:
  • The impossibility of lifting water to a height of more than 9 meters;
  • Too much noise level of the unit during the working process.

Important: pumps for processing dirty water are not always capable of pumping clean liquid. Too large inlet of the pump interferes with this.

Recommendations for the operation of surface pumps for contaminated water

  • First of all, it is worth completely eliminating the risk of immersing the pump in water. Its work is carried out only with surface mounting;
  • When connecting the equipment to the network, care should be taken to have a reliable transformer that will prevent the pump from burning out in the event of pressure drops;
  • It is worth being attentive to the quality and type of liquid processed by the pump and strictly adhere to the manufacturer's recommendations;
  • It is forbidden to move the unit during its operation (this includes tilting, turning and pump oscillations);
  • In the cold season, care must be taken to insulate the pump;
  • And when choosing a self-priming surface pump, always pay attention to its performance.
