Orthodox twelfth holidays in August 2017 in Russia

Twelve are called the twelve most significant after the most important - Easter - holiday. These holidays mark the most important events of the earthly path of Jesus Christ and the Mother of God.

The list of Orthodox holidays in August 2017 includes two twelfth holidays:

Both holidays are non-transferable, that is, the specified dates are assigned to them, and they do not change in any way from year to year.

Holiday Transformations dedicated to the gospel event when Jesus went with his three apostles (Peter, James and John) to pray on high mountain. Prior to this, he explained to his disciples for a very long time that suffering and earthly death would soon await him, but the apostles were embarrassed, and they could not understand that the kingdom of Jesus was not on earth at all.

Finally, having gone with the disciples to the mountain, Jesus began to pray a lot and for a long time. The apostles got tired and fell asleep, and when they woke up, they saw the transfigured Christ, who shone his face so that it seemed as if it was shining. The clothes of Christ became snow-white and shining. The prophets Moses and Elijah were also there.

The most miraculous thing was the appearance of the Voice of God, which said that Jesus is his son, and he should be obeyed in everything.

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the day of her death. After the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ, she lived, according to various sources, from 10 to 22 years and died quietly, as if falling asleep. Like her son, the Mother of God resurrected and ascended three days later.

Assumption post in 2017: what date does it begin and end

The dates of the Assumption Lent are the same every year - it continues from 14 to 27 August, capturing two weeks before the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Assumption fasting is second only to Great Lent in severity, surpassing all others.

Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the Dormition Fast should be given to “dry eating”, when only vegetable food without oil is allowed. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, boiled food without oil is allowed. Oil and wine are allowed on weekends.

Of course, limiting oneself in food for a Christian during fasting is an important, but not the main attribute of fasting. Still, the meaning of fasting is to work on yourself, on your soul. At the same time, one must remember that one cannot feel superior to those who do not fast - this is a great sin called pride.

Church fasts in August

It is important to remember that during fasting, you not only need to limit yourself to food, but also avoid other worldly passions. A true believer spends days of multi-day and one-day fasts in prayer.

Note that in August one of the main multi-day fasts begins - Uspensky. It starts on August 14 and ends on August 27, 2017. Assumption fasting is considered strict, therefore it has serious food restrictions.

The celebration of the Honey Savior falls at the beginning of this post, and with its end, the no less significant Orthodox holiday of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary comes to Christians.

More about holidays

The last month of summer spoils us with its truly warm and “delicious” festivities. Why are there only three rescuers who go one by one. In addition, in August, a great holiday comes to all believers - the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos, which is the twelfth non-transitory, which means it has a fixed date.

Honey Spas

Many Christians compare it to the pagan harvest festival. It is not for nothing that beekeepers collect the largest crops of fragrant honey, carefully prepared by bees, on this day.

On Honey Spas, it is customary to cook various treats, richly seasoned with honey and poppy seeds. In Russia, they baked mountains of pies, pancakes, made honey and poppy fudge, honey meringue and other delicacies.

Apple Spas

Along with the Apple Savior, the entire Orthodox Church celebrates one of the main holidays - the Transfiguration of the Lord. On this day, Jesus Christ first appeared to his disciples not in the form of a mere mortal, but as the Son of God. If we talk about the Apple Savior, then this holiday also belongs to a number of pagan ones and is dedicated to harvesting.

On this day, it is customary to come to church with apples and other fruits of the new harvest, so that the clergyman sanctifies them for the whole next year. It is believed that all the fruits harvested at the end of August absorb the grace of the earth and keep it for many months.

At Apple Spas, housewives baked pies and pies with apples so that the whole family, as well as people who came to celebrate this bright celebration, would be treated.

Nut spas (bread)

This is the third Orthodox Savior, which marks the ripening of hazel and wheat. Like the other two rescues, Orekhovy has its own traditions and customs. Mistresses baked from time immemorial delicious food for this holiday: bread cakes, loaves, dishes with nuts and much more.

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

It is noteworthy that this holiday does not mourn the Virgin Mary, but, on the contrary, glorifies her Resurrection and the fact that she is finally reunited with her Son and now looks down on us all from heaven. This celebration belongs to the twelfth non-transitory, i.e. celebrated on the same day. The Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos is preceded by, which in its severity can only be inferior to Great Lent.

The last summer month is rich not only in harvest, but also in the number of revered church holidays.
