How to connect a toilet to a sewer: options and diagrams

The need to connect the toilet to the sewer system may arise both at the stage of installing a new device in the bathroom, and in the event of a planned or emergency replacement of plumbing. When buying a floor-standing toilet, they evaluate not only the design features of the chosen model, but also the form of the discharge of contaminated water, which can be vertical, oblique or horizontal.

In Stalin's houses, toilets with a vertical outlet were most often installed, in Khrushchevs - with an oblique one, and in modern new buildings, models with a horizontal outlet are being designed and installed. The direct connection of the toilet bowl to the sewerage system is made using special pipeline fittings.

The fastest work is carried out using a corrugated pipe. You will have to tinker a little longer if you connect a plumbing product through a fan pipe, an eccentric cuff or plastic bends.

The device is chosen depending on the location of the sewer riser and the outlet of the outlet-pipe, while calculating how to connect the toilet with minimal financial and time costs. Otherwise, you will have to redo the sewer, fitting it to the features of the toilet exhaust system.

Various devices for connecting the toilet bowl to the sewerage system provide variability in do-it-yourself installation work

If the connection of the toilet bowl with the sewerage is carried out using vent pipes, then it is possible to achieve a visual visibility of the unity of the installed product with connecting elements made of the same material (sanitary ware, ceramics, porcelain, etc.).

The complexity of the installation lies in the need for an exact match of the parts with the location of the socket of the sewer pipe, since there is no possibility of fitting the connecting element by cutting it.

Cuffs-eccentrics, produced from polymers, are a design of two branches, the axes of which are shifted relative to each other.

Cuffs are sold in various lengths, so you can easily choose the right part for connecting the purchased toilet bowl to the sewer system, which has different parameters for the outlet and socket of the sewer pipe.

Corrugated pipes or corrugations have a plastic shape, due to which the parts can be stretched or compressed, as well as bent at any angle.

All these qualities facilitate installation work, during which the master only monitors the slope of the corrugation, which ensures normal patency.

A cast-iron or plastic sewer pipe is connected to the toilet using a rubber cuff, which turns out during installation, which ensures a 100% tight connection

To enhance the reliability of the connection, a sealant must be used. It turns out a fairly reliable connection that will last for many years.

Self-connection of the toilet bowl is carried out according to the scheme, while the master must have the necessary tools:

  • wrenches in a set or at least one adjustable wrench;
  • several screwdrivers;
  • a metal saw used when dismantling an old toilet bowl;
  • tape measure, hammer, knife;
  • sandpaper;
  • sealant, a little tow, cement;
  • perforator with a set of drill bits;
  • dowel.

Switching from cast iron pipes to plastic products

Cast iron sewer pipes from the toilet to the riser have a diameter of 123 mm, and from the bathroom and sink in the kitchen - 73 mm. Plastic products of gray or orange color differ from the elements of the cast-iron sewerage system in diameter: 110 mm and 50 mm, respectively.

When connecting a new toilet bowl or replacing an old pipe wiring, it becomes necessary to connect plastic pipes to a cast-iron riser with a larger diameter.

To solve this problem, a special rubber cuff is purchased, which is inserted into the cleaned sewer socket.

Dismantling cast iron pipes and cleaning the socket

To carry out dismantling work related to the removal of hardened cement mortar at the junction of the old pipe with the socket, it is necessary to stock up on a hammer, a flat screwdriver, and a pry bar.

By tapping gently with a hammer on the handle of the screwdriver, slowly but surely, the connection of the sewer system elements is released from the cement mortar. When the entire layer of cement has been removed, a wooden stick is inserted into the pipe.

Raising and lowering the stick, stir up the fixed position of the cast-iron pipe, and with a little effort pull it out of the socket

Rust, plaque, deposits are removed with a metal brush mounted on an electric drill. Also, a flat screwdriver or a chisel is used to clean the cast-iron walls.

It is possible to treat the inner walls of the socket with a special substance that corrodes pollution in sewer pipes. This will greatly facilitate the process of cleaning the sewer outlet. To complete the cleaning of the socket, it is necessary to wipe its walls with a clean rag or rag.

The cleaner and smoother the walls of the socket are, the better and more reliably pipes made of different materials will connect.

Installing the rubber cuff on the bell

Reliable fixation of the cuff in the sewer socket is provided with the help of a sealant, which is applied to its walls.

The sealant is applied in a thick layer on the outer surface of the cuff, after which it is inserted into the socket hole

Gently tapping with a hammer on the edge of the cuff, they achieve tight adhesion of the adjoining walls of the two elements of the system. A small amount of technical petroleum jelly or a special plumbing lubricant is applied inside the cuff, which makes it easier to push the outlet of the plastic tee into the socket.

If the pipe does not want to climb into its place, take a piece of plywood, attach it to the pipe and tap it with a hammer. This will clog the pipe and not damage its walls.

Connection with corrugated pipe

A corrugation (the so-called corrugated pipe for short) designed for installing a toilet bowl in a sewer system is used when other materials simply cannot be used. Installation is carried out as follows:

  • set the toilet to the selected position;
  • determine the drilling locations of the floor tiles, marking them with a simple pencil inserted into the holes in the plumbing fixture;
  • after marking, the toilet is moved to another place in order to drill holes for the dowels at the marked points;
  • insert dowels into the drilled holes, fixing the stable position of the toilet bowl;
  • one end of the corrugation is inserted into the sewer hole, lubricating the joint with silicone sealant;
  • the other end of the corrugation is put on the outlet of the toilet bowl;
  • carry out all other installation operations and test the plumbing fixture, using it for its intended purpose.
  • check the reliability of the connection by drawing water into the drain tank and performing a control drain;
  • the absence of leaks indicates a hermetic connection of all elements.

Check the levelness of the concrete base before installing the device. If a height difference is detected, pour a self-leveling screed. Otherwise, after installation, the toilet will stagger.

Connecting a toilet with an adapter

You can connect the toilet to a centralized sewerage system using special pipes, which are called adapters or fan pipes. With this method of connection, the shape of the outlet of the toilet bowl plays an important role.

If the outlet has an oblique shape, then the toilet is installed "on the floor". Devices with a vertical outlet are mounted “into the wall”, maintaining a straight 90-degree angle of the nozzle. Toilets with an oblique outlet are also installed “into the wall”, but the connecting pipe is already turned in at an acute angle of approximately 30-40 degrees.

When replacing plumbing, as a rule, a new toilet model with the same release form is chosen. If, when buying a new device, you ignore such a criterion as the release form, then you will have to modify the connection method using a corrugation or eccentric cuffs.

According to the existing classification, all models of toilet bowls according to the type of release can be schematically divided into three large groups, shown in this picture

Installation of a toilet bowl with a vertical outlet

Models of toilet bowls with a vertical release form are installed in cottages and houses of old construction. The siphon and pipe are an integral part of the device, and therefore, after the installation is completed, these parts cannot be seen.

The product can be installed at a close distance from the wall, since it is not required to leave space for the placement of pipeline fittings. The installation of a plumbing fixture is started after dismantling the old product and cleaning the surface of the site allotted for the new toilet.

Installation of a toilet bowl with a vertical outlet is distinguished by the presence of a special flange connection that provides reliable sealing of the junction of the device and the sewerage system

Having made markings for the fasteners, they begin to install a screw-type flange into the floor, having a retainer and a hole designed to connect the device to the sewer system.

All flanges are the same size. Manufacturers producing vertical toilets complete them with special elements necessary for hermetic docking with flanges.

Putting the toilet in place, and making sure that all the existing holes and joints match, the whole structure is slightly rotated.

In this case, the connection of two elements takes place, the tightness of which is guaranteed by the presence of an o-ring laid between the parts.

Installation of a toilet with a horizontal outlet

It is convenient and easy to connect a toilet with a horizontal outlet to a vertically standing sewer riser. The device is installed at a short distance from the socket of the sewer pipe.

This requirement is taken into account when planning the area of the bathroom. In multi-storey buildings, it is impractical to design and create sewerage wiring with a horizontal outlet, since in this case a 110-mm pipe must be built into the floor or hidden in a decorative box.

A toilet bowl with a horizontal outlet is connected to the vertical riser of the central sewer, using a sealing cuff or corrugation as a connecting element. Connections are recommended to be sealed with silicone sealants to prevent leakage and unpleasant odors.

When the center of the horizontal outlet is displaced relative to the socket of the sewerage system, a corrugation or a corner is used to connect the elements, paired with a short pipe. The toilet bowl is connected to a pipe through a rubber cuff.

Installation of a toilet bowl with an oblique outlet

This form of sewer release is typical for houses built in the second half of the twentieth century. At that time, cast iron fittings were used to equip the sewerage system at the facility.

Now we have to dock the oblique outlets of the toilet bowls with cast-iron sockets, carefully covering the resulting joint with cement mortar. During the execution of work, they carefully monitor that the solution does not fall into the sewer riser.

Before the institution of the release of the toilet bowl, a mixture of red lead and drying oil is applied to its surface. Then the resin strand is tightly wound, leaving its end free. Once again, they coat the outlet with a red lead wound with a strand, after which they insert it into the sewer socket, firmly fixing its position.

There is another way to connect a toilet with an oblique outlet to the sewer system, which is not associated with "dirty" work.

We are talking about the use of a rubber cuff, which is put on the outlet pipe, and then connected to the sewer pipe. To ensure reliable tightness of the connection, the old dried mortar is carefully cleaned from the cast-iron socket. With a forced displacement of the toilet bowl relative to the location of the hole in the sewer pipe, a corrugation is used.

If the sewerage system in an apartment building is made of plastic pipes, then the toilet is connected using the methods described above with one difference: you do not need to use cement mortar to seal the joints.
