Diameters of polypropylene pipes for water supply: how to properly assemble the system

Is it time for you to change your plumbing? Do not repeat your past mistake with the installation of water supply from metal pipes - use the modern, versatile, durable and lightweight counterpart -. What you need to know in order to arrange such a modern pipeline for yourself is to find out the required polypropylene diameters, estimate their number that you will need, calculate how many and what kind of fittings you need.

What are the distinguishing features of this particular product?

  • Firstly, they do not corrode - the main reason for the deterioration of metal structures;
  • secondly, they perfectly tolerate abrasive and aggressive liquids and substances;
  • thirdly, the price for them is much more acceptable, and you will significantly save on materials and installation, because the easier the process, the cheaper it costs, even if you turn to professional builders or plumbers for help;
  • fourthly, they do not conduct current;
  • fifthly, you can do the installation yourself, reducing the waste for this part of the estimate to zero;
  • sixthly, they look great, and their appearance does not change from time to time;
  • and, finally, seventhly, they are slippery inside, and because of this, their clogging is minimal, which means that during operation, maintenance and cleaning will be carried out much less frequently, which again benefits you - there will be less spending.

Application area

Where else can you apply this miracle pipe? When installing ventilation and for sewer drains. You can also use them to perform not only internal, but also external work, however, you need to keep in mind that, despite their strength, such pipes generally cannot withstand direct soil pressure, and therefore you will have to build a brick or reinforced concrete casing for an underground outdoor pipes.

The large size is widely used in the industrial sector, in apartment buildings, hotel and hospital complexes, but since we are talking about domestic work, where the number of points is small, you are unlikely to need a large diameter.

You should take into service varieties of polypropylene products (marking):

  • РРВ means increased mechanical strength and can be used for cold water supply through a floor system;
  • PPH indicates the large diameter of the product (used in ventilation and cold water systems);
  • PPR lets the consumer know that this type of pipe is resistant to high temperatures and is suitable for hot water and heating systems.

Modern technologies have made it possible to improve even such remarkable characteristics with the help of reinforcement. The diameter of a reinforced polypropylene pipe can be the same as a regular one, but it will be even more durable and flexible. How are pipes reinforced?

  • With the help of aluminum foil, the layers of which can be located both outside the product and inside the polypropylene (between the layers);
  • with the help of fiberglass, which is mixed with the material;

Such products are less subject to deformation from elevated temperatures and are characterized by super strength.

The advantages of fiberglass products include the absence of delamination and the need for their stripping, which significantly speeds up the progress of installation work.

Diameters and types

As you already understood, the diameters of polypropylene pipes for water supply vary depending on the purpose of the pipeline, so consult with a specialist which products are right for you, because the larger the diameter, the more you will pay for the pipe. An accurate calculation is necessary for large needs - in apartment buildings, in enterprises, in industry, often the choice of the consumer is within 20 mm.

Now let's deal with another significant concept for the implementation of the planned work - types of pipes.

Types of polypropylene pipes are represented by only two copies - PN10 and PN20. The first of them is characterized by low tolerance to high temperatures, therefore it is suitable only for the installation of cold water supply. The second is more versatile, it can be used for both cold and hot water.

Before undertaking the installation of polypropylene pipes, you should think about purchasing a soldering iron. This equipment is quite expensive, so it is advisable to take it, for example, for rent in a store or on loan from friends. The nozzles on it are not designed for large diameters, although you should not worry about this, since pipes from 25 to 35 mm are used to supply water to a five-story house.

Another question that needs to be clarified is how the inner diameter of polypropylene pipes depends on the outer one. To do this, it is necessary to take into account the wall thickness of products of various types, so:

  • if the outer diameter is 16 millimeters, then the wall thickness is 2.7 (only for PN20 conventional or with aluminum fittings);
  • with an outer diameter of 20, the wall thickness PN10 is 1.9, PN16 is 2.8, PN20 (both) is 3.4;
  • with a 25 mm diameter, these indicators will be as follows - PN10 - 2.3, PN16 - 3.5, PN20 - 4.2;
  • diameter 30 mm implies wall thickness PN10 - 3, PN16 - 4.4, PN20 - 5.4
  • 40 mm diameter - PN10 - 3.7, PN16 - 5.5, PN20 - 6.7;

Further ratios are unlikely to be useful to you.

How to choose a soldering iron

The choice of soldering irons for mounting pipes is huge, and the price range is also quite large. In order not to overpay in vain, you must know what to pay close attention to and what can be ignored. Make sure that the selected soldering iron has:

  • temperature controller;
  • constant temperature maintenance;
  • power not more than 1.5 kW (for small pipes, 700 cotton is enough);
  • special nozzles for soldering various pipe diameters.

Remember that the temperature during installation should be about 260 degrees. A serious deviation below this indicator means that the tightness and strength of the connection is at risk.

What else to pay attention to

When buying pipes, do not forget that the outer diameter of polypropylene pipes can be measured both in inches and in millimeters. In order not to get confused in their ratios, resourceful people have developed a whole system of ratios of these two quantities. It is clear that when buying products for the pipeline, you can name any measure of measurement, and an experienced seller will give you what you need without any problems, but this knowledge will come in handy in the future when you buy, for example, corrugations, hoses, taps and others sanitary building materials.

To make this system of translation from one system of measurement to another clear to you, measure an inch pipe - its diameter will be 25.4 millimeters, if you add a thread to this, we get a value equal to 33.5 mm.

The pipe diameter in millimeters will be as follows:

  1. half an inch - 15 mm;
  2. ¾ - 20;
  3. an inch pipe will have a diameter of 25 millimeters;
  4. an inch and a quarter - 32 mm;
  5. one and a half inches - 40 mm in diameter;
  6. two inches - respectively, 50 mm;
  7. two and a half - 65 millimeters;
  8. three inches - 89 mm;
  9. four is 100.

That's how easy you can find out the value you are interested in, if, on the contrary, you know the millimeter characteristic, then using these notations, you can easily calculate the pipe diameter in inches.

Mounting Features

Now you can safely proceed with the installation of your water supply system. The sequence of work is subject to the above scheme.

  1. dismantling of the old system, development of a scheme for installing a new water supply system;
  2. pipe cutting. Keep in mind that any connection, even the strongest, is in any case worse than a single piece of pipe. Minimize cuts and joins;
  3. if there is a need to connect different materials, then special fittings (couplings) are used;
  4. further installation of cranes, pipeline elements is carried out;
  5. additional laying work is carried out (strobes break or fasteners crash);
  6. and finally, the final mounting of the entire system is performed.
  7. All other devices and products are mounted on special fittings. They are useful for installing a meter, filter, mixer, and other pipes (metal). When connecting on fittings, it is mandatory to use a fum-tape (no more than two turns towards the threaded clamp). Everything else is a matter of practice.
