Country toilet without cesspool arrangement

The comfort zone is only as good as the person himself makes it around him. Among the mandatory amenities in a country house or a country cottage there should be a toilet, and preferably a comfortable one, so as not to turn the process into torment. There are many options for building a country toilet, and the most common is a toilet with a cesspool. That's just not everywhere and not always a cesspool is appropriate. In this case, you should familiarize yourself with how to build a country toilet without a cesspool.

When needed

To use a cesspool, a combination of two important circumstances is necessary. First, the groundwater level must be below 2.5 meters. Secondly, the distance from the toilet to the house must be at least 15 meters for a pit without a bottom and to the nearest source of water or reservoirs - at least 30 meters. In the conditions of a summer residence, these requirements are not always feasible, especially since it is impossible to influence the level of groundwater at all.

The way out is to organize a toilet without a cesspool, at least an open one. There are the following options for such solutions:

  • powder closet;
  • toilet with a sealed filler;
  • septic tank;
  • dry closet.

For a small volume, which is typical for summer cottages, where permanent residence is not implied, it is not convenient to use a volumetric leaky storage tank, or even more so a septic tank. Such solutions are expensive, and their throughput and volume are simply not appropriate.

There remains an option with a powder closet and a dry closet. Just about them and will be discussed further.

Storage toilet, powder closet

The idea of such a toilet is extremely simple. A classic outdoor toilet is equipped in the form of a booth, in which a sufficiently high push is constructed with a spectacle and a toilet seat. Directly under the hole is a medium-sized container in which feces accumulate. As a fight against unpleasant odors, sawdust and peat are used, which are initially poured in a layer of 10-15 cm and then sprinkled, powdered with new portions of feces after each use of the toilet.

Simply covering the bucket with a lid does not help. An additional ingredient is needed that will absorb unpleasant odors and further contribute to the decomposition of fecal matter. The result is not only a toilet without unpleasant odors, but also additional fertilizer, because the contents of the toilet can be dumped into a compost heap and further distributed as a feed to the garden.

Diagram of a peat toilet

Even an ordinary tin bucket installed under the toilet seat can act as a reservoir. However, it is better to use a slightly larger container so that there is enough space to fill the peat. The optimal volume is 50-60 liters. This will allow you to empty the toilet less often, and it will not take too much effort to remove the drive and transport it.

This can be a plastic container of a suitable volume or a metal tank made of stainless steel or galvanized steel. The main thing is tightness and the presence of comfortable grips and handles.

The tank should be placed under the seat in the toilet, for this the push is made too high, and a niche is formed under it, possibly even with a recess below the main frame of the toilet. It is advisable to pre-fill a concrete foundation under the container or put a piece of slab and cover it with roofing material.

To access a container:

  • The seat of the push is made folding on the canopies.
  • A door is provided behind the toilet for installing and removing the drive.

In any case, the main thing is to provide a supply of space inside the toilet or behind it, so that it is convenient to operate the container at the time of its emptying.

Even with intensive use of the toilet in the country and permanent residence in the summer, a capacity of 50-60 liters is enough to empty it only once every two weeks, taking into account normal peat powder.

To prevent the spread of residual odors in the toilet, care must be taken to ventilate the storage tank. Another aspect against the use of a simple bucket. Through the rear wall of the toilet from the top of the niche, and preferably directly from the tank, a ventilation pipe made of galvanized steel or PVC with a diameter of 60-80 mm is removed. It should be raised just above the roof of the toilet, about half a meter. Air will constantly circulate from the toilet through the sump and storage tank and into the vent pipe. This will not only make going to the toilet enjoyable, but also speed up the decomposition of feces.

dry closet

There are a huge number of ready-made solutions with one name - dry closet. All of them in one way or another will be relevant at their summer cottage. The main idea of such a toilet is to use a storage tank, as in the case of a powder closet, only liquid chemicals are additionally used for the most complete decomposition of feces. The main objective of the use of funds is to get rid of an unpleasant odor. In order to be able to sufficiently secure the fecal masses and bring them to a neutral form and safely merge into the ground, the use of specialized biological additives will be required.

Dry closet involves the use of a sealed container located directly under the toilet. Hydro-decoupling or special valves that can isolate the drive help to eliminate the spread of odors. For normal operation of the dry closet, it may be necessary to bring a water pipe to it to flush out feces, as well as to remove the ventilation pipe, which many models are equipped with.

According to the dimensions and method of use, dry closets can be:

  • stationary;
  • mobile.

According to the method of processing feces:

  • liquid;
  • peat;
  • electrical.

Stationary are a ready-made booth with a built-in capacity for the accumulation of wastewater. It will have to be emptied and the contents taken out by a sewage machine.

Mobile dry closet

The simplest model of a mobile dry closet is supplied with a tank of water used for draining with a volume of 10-15 liters, as well as a storage tank with a volume of 20-30 liters. The dimensions are slightly larger than a conventional toilet, only slightly wider and square in shape. You can easily bring it with you to the country and use it for its intended purpose. After rest, they take it with them and empty it into the sewer system.

For a liquid dry closet, you should definitely purchase special fillers that will process fecal matter to eliminate odor. Their cost can start from 400 rubles and reach up to 1500-2000 rubles. It is advisable to use fillers recommended by the manufacturer.

After filling the tank, the contents are poured into the sewer, pumped out by a sewage machine or taken out independently. When choosing the optimal model of a dry closet for a summer residence, you should focus on the volume of the storage tank and the number of people who will use it. All this information can be found in the instructions from the manufacturer.

Peat dry closets are a ready-made alternative to powder closets. In fact, the same thing in terms of functionality and meaning, only in a convenient design.

Electric dry closets are the most complex and demanding, however, they do not need to be emptied and maintained as often as all previous options. Such devices must be connected to the mains supply. With the help of a compressor and a ventilation system, the faeces are dried and accumulated in the dry residue. The liquid drains separately or evaporates.

You can also make your own dry closet. To do this, it is enough to build an analogue of powder closet. Only unlike the first, the tank is made airtight, up to the inlet in the push of the toilet. For decoupling, a spring-loaded galvanized cover is adapted, which will open into the drive, or a top cover rubberized around the perimeter.
